About the Author

John Tehranian is the Irwin R. Buchalter Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School and the Bierderman Entertainment and Media Law Institute in Los Angeles, California. He is also a founding partner of One LLP, an entertainment and intellectual property firm in Southern California known for handling high-profile copyright infringement litigation. In the course of his legal practice, Tehranian has represented clients in a wide range of cases, from the alleged infringement of Winston Churchill's speeches, an ownership dispute over the recording of Jimi Hendrix's last major concert, and publicity rights over the images of Bette Davis and Bettie Page to fair use rights to Britney Spears photographs, remake rights to a Jules Verne novel and political parody rights to a Don Henley classic. Tehranian has previously served as Professor of Law at the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law, and as Visiting Professor of Law at Loyola Law School. A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, he is the author of numerous articles on the interface between law and culture, with a particular focus on issues of intellectual property, entertainment, and civil rights. He is also the author of the book Whitewashed (2009).

Gr. 7-10. In this take on "Beauty and the Beast," Napoli focuses on Beast before French beauty Belle enters his life. The first-person story begins in Persia, where proud prince Orasmyn, who loves roses, makes an unfortunate decision that sets in motion a curse: he becomes a lion who can only be restored by the love of a woman. Realizing he must leave Persia to prevent his father from killing him, he uses his instincts, both human and bestial, to embark on a torturous trek that leads to India, back to Persia, and eventually to France, where he's heard the roses are the best in the world. In France, he settles in a deserted, purportedly haunted castle and revives the gardens, not an easy task in his beast form. Eventually, a man who was lost in a storm arrives and picks a rose. Here, the traditional tale kicks in, with the only difference being the Beast's laborious efforts to make his castle habitable for the expected young woman. Napoli skillfully shows Orasmyn as both human and beast; he learns to survive and to kill and eat prey, yet he always maintains his humanity. She also infuses her tale with a keen flavor of ancient Islamic culture and religion. It's a winning version for genre fans. Sally Estes

Finally, the Beast's Point of View

This book was a first for me, in the sense that I have read a number of renditions of Beauty & the Beast, but have just now read one from the Beast's point of view. Of course, like other Napoli works, it isn't the traditional European/Disney tale we know. Exotic in location and plot, this Beast is not a product of wicked magic, at least not as it normally comes. His sin, pride, is in line with other tellings of this story, but the theme is much more religious and therefore, unique.
As much as I loved both of Robin McKinley's Beauty & Beast novels ("Beauty" and "Rose Daughter"), I was glad to see the exploration of what makes up a beast: violence, hunger, killing. The bloodshed is handled well - nothing graphic or tasteless - but it is not avoided, and this Beast is definitely a carnivore.
Napoli's research is, like always, superb. She has no useless words. "Beast" is a fine successor to "Zel" and other Napoli works. Maybe it didn't strike into my heart as sharply as "Zel" did, but "Beast" has its own beauty.

The best book I have ever read! READ THIS ONE!!

Skimmimg through books at the library, I was intrigued by the spine design for "Beast." I started to read it. When I looked up again, after reading through the first six chapters without stopping, hours had gone by. I was DEFINITLEY going to take out this book! It was compelling all the time through. The ending was great, not even rushed like some books I have read.
The beast, in the book, turns into a lion. He is shunned by his hometown of India, and doesn't know where to go, or how to live. By one of his mother's books, he is guided to France where he meets the stunning and sympathetic beauty, and the curse is broken.
Everyone knows the story line of this novel. Still Napoli has redone the story in a greatly creative way. She shows the emotions of the beast as he goes from home to home, not fitting in with a lion pride, and finally residing in an old abandoned French castle. Napoli is one of the first authors who have written this story from the Beast's point of view. The whole time through, I was amazed by her awesome ability to write a great novel. She creates many interesting twists to the tale, such as the beast living in India, and does it in an astoundingly creative way.
I greatly enjoyed this book. It really deserves more than five stars! You HAVE to read it!
I would recommed this book to young adults, because some of the material is mature for younger readers. When younger readers get olsder though, they should really read this book. It was really one of my favorites! Donna Jo Napoli is really a GREAT storyteller!!!

When I first settled down to read "Beast" I was intrigued by the Persian setting in Napoli's retelling of this classic tale. When Prince Orasmyn offends a faerie, he is cursed to forever roam the earth as a beast. That is, unless he can win the love of a woman. Fleeing his omened death and his fate, Orasmyn leaves his beloved country for India, and ulitmately settles in France.

I give Napoli credit, especially since she is working with material that is already familiar to her readers. Everybody knows that Prince Charming finds Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty awakens, Beast regains his human form. While "Beast" begins and ends strong, I found certain elements of the middle section to be almost disturbing. After Orasmyn flees his mother and father's palace, he encounters two female lionesses. Napoli describes as Orasmyn mates with the two females. Considering that Orasmyn is a lion himself, it's not so disturbing, but since he still thinks like a human and has human thoughts it's borderline bestiality. Furthermore, it's not essential to the plot and not entirely appropriate for a book aimed for twelve year olds. It remains there for shock value more than anything. Aside from my quip with that particular scene, the middle section of the book seriously lags in comparison to the beginning chapters and the chapters following his intorduction to Belle.

My only other issue with this book is something I have encountered in a few of Napoli's works. The ending to "Beast" seems especially rushed. It's as if the book is just moving along fine and then BAM! The End. It left me unsatisfied and frustrated. I mean, of course the reader knows how the story ends, but Napoli didn't make it her own.

The cultural setting of "Beast" is its most entertaining aspect and it is a quick read. The characters are likeable, but somewhat distant. I enjoyed "Beast" alright but it is not a book I could re-read and it is definitely one of my least favorites by Donna Jo Napoli.

Excellent Format For Problem-Solving Help

I've purchased a series of these Schaum's Outlines for my highschooler. I don't think they replace the textbooks. But they are great for looking up a specific type of problem with which you're having trouble. Especially since some types of problems will show up in homework that haven't been fully covered in class.

First the problem is stated. Directly underneath it is the solution, which you cover up with a piece of paper as you work on the problem. The best part is that you aren't just given the answer, you are given the solution, as in Show Your Work! In addition, prose explanations are added to show why you are doing what you're doing. Perhaps not quite as much explanation as in the Physics Outline book, but then the Physics problems tend more towards word problems in several sections. The set-up of Precalculus is still excellent.

This is the 3rd edition of the Precalculus Outline. If you have a previous edition, and wish to compare:
According to the preface, the 2nd edition differed from the 1st edition by adding problems for: avg rate of change, price/demand, polar form of complex numbers, conic sections in polar coordinates, algebra of the dot product, and an entire chapter on introduction to differential calculus.
There is no explanation of the difference between the 2nd and the 3rd editions, but it probably is the references to Schaums.com for extra study resources. When you enter Schaums.com, you are taken to mhprofessional.com. It has video tutorials for Schaum's Outlines. This Precalculus Outline is not one of them, though. As of today, the website has videos for these five Outline workbooks: 30 videos for Calculus, 24 videos for Geometry, 25 for Linear Algebra, 20 for Probability and Statistics and 20 problems for Trigonometry. Each video covers one problem from the workbook. For example, the first two videos for the Calculus Outline are for problems Ch. 3-21 and Ch. 6-17.

Excellent for teaching

I got this book because one of my professors recommended me Schaum's outlines to learn tricks. Never got one of them until now that I am teaching this class in college. So far it has given me great insight. For example, I never considered finding the range of a quadratic function by knowing the y coordinate of its vertex. Because such number, say k, gives a minimum or a maximum, then its range is [k,inf) or (-inf,k] respectively (of course, with its largest domain considered). There are also additional stuff that is not included in our official text (the text is actually good but it can be supplemented) like algebraic functions and the relation of variability; for example, Kepler gave us the equation T=kd^3 where T is the time it takes for a planet to revolve around the sun (called the period) and d is the distance from the sun. Then k is some constant and we say that T varies directly as d.

I think learning tricks in math is very useful not only because it helps solve things more readily, but it even gives more insight. Also, I come from a theoretical background and my concentration did not use that many tricks for calculations. I thought I was gonna struggle a lot to get use to precalculus again but so far everything is going great. Since this is my first try on this book series, I can't really say much about it aside from this one. Safier is a good author and all the information is straight to the point. I think this is a good purchase but you can also access these stuff online; I just like have printed copies.

My daughter is a Junior in high school and her tutor recommended this book. Already she has seen a difference in the ease with which she completes her homework as well as her overall understanding! I have already recommended it to several other parents for her peers.

If you like The Spirit, you'll love Goon.

What can I say, I can't believe I am the first person to review this amazing comic on amazon. Eric Powell's writing is original and hilarious, the art is reminiscent of The Spirit and even old EC comics Mad Magazine. It's comic book noir, complete with zombies and exploding orangutangs. No seriously. If you're tired of capes and tights, give Goon a try.

Yay! Goon.

I still think 'Rough Stuff' is the best Goon collection, but from here on out it is Nuthin' but a sheer joyride. The Goon reminds me of Simon Bizley's take on Lobo, if Lobo had been in an E.C. horror comic. This whole series (except China Town, don't even mention China Town) is JUST SO AWESOME!!!!

Our first venture into the realm of graphic novels is what I would call an outstanding success. See, The Goon is a tough as nails, no-nonsense dude who gets his kicks by bashing in the heads of zombies and an assortment of other creatures. This big fella just isn't one to mess with. He rarely loses a tussle, and emits enough confidence to make Hellboy stop in his tracks. Honestly, he's a bad, bad dude.

Nothin' But Misery plays as an anthology of sorts rather than a single ongoing story. Sure there are major connections within these tales, but each little narrative stands on its own, offering an array of compelling plot lines. In one moment he's saving his pal Franky from a man-eating succubus or two, the next he's riding a werewolf to retrieve a few children who've been eaten... by the most unassuming bastards you could imagine. The journeys Goon embarks on are exciting on all fronts. Eric Powell's ability with words as well as illustrations is magnificent. He's got a wild enough imagination to ensure boredom is no issue.

Nothin' But Misery is 100-plus pages of brilliant artwork, insane monsters and some extremely successful comedy. In fact, the comedic tone of the book may be the true highlight. Powell hits the one-liners with perfection, and the laughs work to counter the savagery of some of these tales.

I'm not out to tell you this is a petrifying graphic novel, because it's not. But I will tell you this: The Goon: Nothin' But Misery is supremely entertaining. It's an infectious read that brings a pair of highly memorable characters to the spotlight, and thrusts a fantastic ensemble of villains in the reader's face. For my money, The Goon is a stud character, and Eric Powell is one hell of a creator.

This is a fantastic book. The author

This is a fantastic book. The author, Rosey Dow, has a marvelous way of keeping you spell bound throughout the three
different stories in one book. The first portion is about a girl named Meg who had a hard life after losing her comfortable
secure life when her father dies, then Meg entered into a business arrangement which changed her life. The second portion
is about Meg's maid and about a man she meets and how her life changed. Then in the third section, it is about Banjo, the
ranch hand, a special person he meets and how his life changes. There is also mystery, drama, and love in this book. Anyone will
enjoy reading this book. My husband even enjoyed it.

I read the book Colorado and loved it very much. I read it is about a week. It was one of the best Christian western books I have ever read. I will read as many as I can. Would love to read another story on the lives of Megan and Banjo, starting from the end of the last one. Thank you so much for inspiring me to lead more people to the Lord. In your stories you made it seem so easy and it encouraged me in my witnessing. You are a blessing.....

Kazuaki Tanahashi, a Japanese-trained calligrapher, is the pioneer of the genre of "one stroke painting" as well as the creator of multicolor enso (Zen circles). His brushwork has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries, museums, and universities all over the world. Tanahashi has edited several books of Dogen's writings and is also the author of Brush Mind.

The best collection of Ryokan to date

I am so happy and so grateful for this outstanding collection of prose, poems and stories. I have felt a closeness to Ryokan for 40 years or so, and have had to settle for just a few books in English. One in particular, which I will not name out of respect, seemed to almost exclusively focus on the sadder more melancholy poems, but in this brilliant translation by Kazuaki Tanahashi we find a much more well rounded presentation of Ryokan; his sacredness, his Zen mind, his outlandish humor,his irreverence,his lonely moments and his searing insight.

I find myself deeply moved by this much bigger view of the Great Fool. I wish I could drink sake' with him and play hide and seek with the village children. Ryokan is a great inspiration for me. Endless bows to both Ryokan and Mr. Tanahashi.

Sensitively Done

In Sky Above, Great Wind, Tanahashi elegantly presents a well-rounded sampling of the writings of Master Ryokan accompanied by biographical information and insightful analysis of the iconic master's calligraphy, poetic form, and subject matter. Sampling a diverse array of Ryokan's works, Tanahashi demonstrates that there is more to the Great Fool than many have presumed.

He thus paints a complex image of the poet through a balance of poems dwelling on simplistic child-like elation with those depicting the internal struggle of loneliness, along with the whole spectrum of emotions in between. These poems evoke contemplation of the many facets of existence, including the individual's understanding of the universe. For example, Ryokan asks us:

How could we discuss
This and that
Without knowing
The whole world is
Reflected in a single pearl?

Tanahashi constantly strives to capture that which is lost in translation and brings the ancient word alive and fresh. With its detailed yet succinct commentary, humorous anecdotes, and disarmingly beautiful poems, this collection is invaluable for any connoisseur of Zen poetry or Buddhist teachings.

For anyone wanting to know more about the life of Ryokan, I recommend Extraordinary Zen Masters: A Maverick, a Master of Masters, and a Wandering Poet (which I got as a review copy) by the accomplished translator, writer, and Zen teacher John Stevens who also translated Rengetsu: Life and Poetry of Lotus Moon. Extraordinary Zen Masters profiles three influential, interesting and creative Zen masters (Ryokan obviously being one of them), told in a biographically straight forward, but engaging way.

Telltale Calligraphy of a Zen Life

Kaz Tanahashi, the author and translator of this new book on Ryokan, was my calligraphy instructor and his inclusion of examples and discussion of Ryokan's calligraphy makes the book especially worthwhile. I already own two of John Steven's translations of Ryokan and was curious to examine this far more extensive book. Before even reading the poems, I studied the calligraphy. The brush stroke reveals the artist, the poet. The lightness, the thinness, the flowing together hint about the style of poetry. It is so different than Korean thick, strong, confident calligraphy and the refined, scholarly, and carefully stylized Chinese lines. Ryokan dances freely on tip toes. Leaving the Zen monastery after completing training and living alone near temples in small huts, he became independent from rules and norms, yet lived his practice in poverty, relishing the simplicity of the moment of each natural event. His poetry reflects this approach to life. He famously was known to entertain children, as he himself was much a child with 'beginner's mind.' A lonely hermit who loved company, he late in life developed a teacher-student romantic relationship with the much younger nun Teishin, and we are glad for that comfort as he died. After the poems, Tanahaski presents a series of anecdotes and then a thorough analysis of Ryokan's various poetic forms--haiku, waka, and kanshi. This fine book gives the reader a deeper impression of the poet and Zen practitioner. It inspires and motivates. Ryokan reminds us to awake from our dream.

The size was disappointing. Quite a bit, actually. It was not what I was expecting and I was astonished that it wasn't lost in the packaging. That being said Kinkade was fantastic, I love his art, and the quotes were nice to read over a cup of tea.
