An Excellent, Comprehensive and Well Written Manual & Program

Rogers and Maytan have done us all a great service in creating this truly outstanding guidebook!!

I work in a college counseling center and, over the past 12 years, I have tried to teach my students mindfulness in 3 minute snippets during their appointments--Needless to say that has been a marginally effective and minimalist approach. Now, with having read this very fluently written and easy to approach handbook, I feel ready to be able to move on to doing this in a group setting.

Mindfulness for the Next Generation is a clearly written, well organized, method-based concise guide for professionals seeking to teach mindfulness to college students. A great deal of the pleasure in reading this book came from it being well written and how it approaches teaching mindfulness using intuitive skills that most experienced mental health providers are familiar with.

I especially appreciated having chapter summary boxes labelled as CHAPTER KEY POINTS listing important take home messages; this makes it easy to bookmark pages and quickly peek at them during sessions.

Another important feature is the emphasis on the use of stories as a way to learn; the authors talk about the value of this in application of teaching mindfulness and meditation, however also apply stories as a very effective tool for the reader (eg; give clinical vignettes about students, also personal narratives are interspersed from time to time). I discussed this with a couple of other colleagues in other parts of the country who read it and they also felt it was excellent!

This book is a highly enjoyable, fast, thought-provoking read from which I walked away feeling I had gained some important and easily replicable skills. Definitely worth my time!!

I am hoping Rogers will be selling her mindfulness exercise CDs soon.

College Mental Health Center: Eating Disorder Therapist

Mindfulness for the Next Generation is a MUST read for college health professionals who are seeking creative methods for addressing the range of mental health or normal developmental concerns that emerge in the college population. I am a firm believer in the use of workshops in a college mental health setting and this book is a perfect teaching tool for those who may wish to bring mindfulness courses into their center. I use mindfulness regularly in my individual practice with disordered eating and after reading this book, would certainly add a referral to a mindfulness class to my range of interventions. As a workshop facilitator, I particularly appreciate the research chapter on mindfulness and the helpful responses to the specific questions that a speaker may encounter in a workshop. I also appreciate that the authors have specifically addressed the barriers and challenges that may arise when teaching mindfulness to college students - will certainly benefit as I put my own workshop together!

Excellent resource for professionals in pastoral counseling, chaplaincy, ministry, and spiritual formation

This book provides an excellent program for those of us teaching mindfulness and meditation to university students and young professionals. There are a number of books that are written for students themselves, but nothing that teaches teachers/chaplains/counselors how to teach. To be honest, when I began working as a Buddhist chaplain in a university setting three years ago, I simply had to wing it, taking my best guess as to what university students needed to hear. When I started reading Rogers and Maytan's book, I found light bulbs going off in my head. Throughout, I was nodding and thinking, "Yes, this is exactly right. This is perfect."

Though the book is directly useful to professionals in the field of psychology and wellness, it is also a tremendous resource for those of us in pastoral counseling, spiritual development, ministry, and chaplaincy. This is a must-read for Buddhist chaplains. At the same time, those professionals in other faith traditions, be they Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, etc., will find this book valuable in giving them ways to help their students develop skills in reducing stress, finding authenticity, and tapping into the wisdom of their own religious tradition.

Extending the Table is an invitation...to enjoy the gifts of people from Argentina and Bangladesh to Yugoslavia and Zambia. Food is a medium of communication, but it is more; in a mysterious way, it is part of the message, as Jesus so vividly portrayed in the breaking of bread and distribution of the cup.

Extending the Table follows in the tradition of Doris Janzen Longacre's More-with-Less Cookbook, especially her Living More with Less, which I, as her husband, competed after her death. Both books challenged us to learn from the world community, to celebrate with joy, and to care for the earth. Extending the Table presents recipes and stories of people around the world. Many of them live with few material resources, yet they share gifts which point us toward a different and freer way of life.

Extending the Table is much more than a cookbook. Yes, there are recipes here from all over the globe: Sesame Spinach Salad from Korea, Hunter's Stew from Poland, and Watermelon Jan from Botswana. There are myriad rice dishes, lots of recipes featuring beans and lentils, and an array of delicious beverages--from Philippine Punch to a Ginger Cooler from the Ivory Coast. But what makes this cookbook so special is its social conscience: following the lead of Doris Janzen Longacre, author of the More-with-Less Cookbook, Extending the Table invites readers to reduce their own levels of consumption and share resources with others around the world. Even more, it encourages us to learn from the global community. In addition to the recipes, there are stories about both individuals and whole cultures, explanations of the importance of certain types of food in different lands, and the rituals that surround particular meals. Cooks who don't object to dishes garnished with Christian moralizing (primarily on the virtues of sharing and the "sacred nature of food"141 ) will find an abundance of appetizing ideas for everyday cookery in this collection commissioned by the Mennonite Central Committee. Home economistp. 6 Schlabach's first cookbook brings together recipes from more than 80 different countries, from familiar Polish bigos or Chinese hot-and-sour soup to the more exotic--chicken with garlic and lime juice from Guadeloupe, and a recipe from Chad for meatballs that contain ground sesame and melon seeds as well as other seasonings. Some recipes have been adapted, mostly to reduce fat content or shorten preparation time. For example, Ugandan groundnut sauce can be prepared from scratch using raw peanuts, but a quick and very flavorful version can be whipped up by substituting chunky peanut butter. Some recipes, like Belizean potato salad and sayur manis (a sweet and spicy Indonesian dish made with butternut squash), include microwave instructions.

My Favorite Cookbook

The recipes from all over the world, mainly third-world nations, are delicious, easy-to-prepare, healthy, and can be made from inexpensive ingredients after an initial investment in spices. My husband and I were unemployed students and this cookbook gave us an endless variety of ideas for how to prepare lentils, at 50 cents a meal! I buy fresh garlic and ginger and keep both in my freezer. No need to peel the ginger if you've washed it before freezing it, and it breaks apart easily when it has been frozen. Though seasonings can be expensive, they can make the most basic ingredients--dried beans, lentils, grains--savory and satisfying! If you don't have the ingredients the recipe calls for, improvise! These recipes are extrememly versatile.

There is a index for the recipes origin, so you can decide to have a complete dinner featuring a particular nation or region. Many meals can be prepared with one or two pots on your stove, as many kitchens in the world contain only a wood-fired stove.

If you buy this book, spend some time just reading it-- it is filled with stories and observations from MCC volunteers who lived in community with the poor of the world and experienced generosity and hospitality of their neighbors. Some stories will bring you to tears. You will never think of food in the same way again.

Excellent!

My husband and I cook almost exclusively from this cookbook and its companion, More with Less. But I love this one! A few of the recipes are too spicey for me, but by and large it's taught me whole new ways to "do" food that I never would have thought of.

It's important to us to live lightly on the earth and not overconsume, so we are delighted to have this resource to help us eat "low" on the food chain while also saving money and eating some of the tastiest dishes we've ever made! I really like that it's a cookbook not just about eating, but about everything from farming and environmentalism to poverty and hunger to fellowship and sharing to energy use in cooking. It really helps us make conscious choices about our cooking - after all, food is a moral choice.

But most of all, the recipes are all delicious, hearty, nutritious, inexpensive, and easy to make, even for a cooking klutz like me!

The best "real world" international cookbook I've found

I have been searching for a cookbook since I moved to an area with limited international restaurants. Specifically, I was searching for a cookbook with Ethiopian recipes which I particularly love. This book is it! Everything that I have made has tasted authentic--Ethiopian and Indian. I have even tried some recipes of which I am not familiar (Dominican Republic and South African), all were delicious. I plan on giving this as a gift to my friends in the future.

About the Author

Curtis L. Meinert, PhD, is a Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was founder of the Center for Clinical Trials and served as its director through September 2005. He was a founding member of the Society for Clinical Trials and was Editor of Controlled Clinical Trials from its inception in 1980 through 1993.

Practical for the practioner

I was trained with the first edition. Now, I teach with the second edition.
Usually I prefer PDF file to other format files. However I like this kindle edition, because it seems same with print version.
One con: for example randomization chapter is almost same with the one in previous edition.

Great book. Really tells the story of what it was like... the mental strain is obvious from the dangers experienced. Recounts the personal stories submitted in report form to the authorities after the events... stories which may well have changed the subjects' lives forever. Particularly helpful was the section on escape techniques.

Her father is a gunsmith and partial to the Second Amendment. The best anecdotes in this book have been pilfered from her family, and she graciously acknowledges the debt. Her liberal use of pop culture serves as a touchstone throughout the collection. The most memorable essay, "What I See When I Look at the Face on the $20 Bill," recounts a cross-country trip with her fraternal twin sister. They followed the Trail of Tears searching for their heritage and discovered their own constantly conflicting emotions. Many of these pieces were written for radio and lack depth, but Take the Cannoli is still a satisfying read. Recommended for larger public libraries.

Witty, Irreverent, Entertaining and Insightful

Sarah Vowell brings her trademark wit and attention to detail to a range of topics in this remarkable collection. She ranges from the everyday (mix tapes and UPS deliveries) to more complex subjects (her Cherokee heritage and Trail of Tears), and provides insights into American culture that are profound. She stakes her claim to be able to criticize American wrongdoings but also to wholeheartedly love her country (in an essay entitled "Vindictively American").
The love of music she evidenced in her previous book Radio On is still here, with her faves like Jonathan Richman sprinkled throughout the book. Her irreverent spirit is best displayed in the title chapter, where she appropriates the phrase "Take The Cannoli" from the film The Godfather and truly makes it her own.
Vowell goes to Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp, goes deep into the heart of the Chelsea Hotel, and gets glammed up as a goth girl, all in the name of journalism. She truly shines in this collection as a young person who has not given up on America or on rock n' roll, but who right claims her place to critique and evaluate them on her own terms.

A Long Way from "Tico Tico"

Scanning the car radio while driving one night, I stumbled on a very young-sounding woman describing the tribulations of performing in a high school marching band during a football game: "having to maneuver into cute visual formations, like the trio of stick figures we fashioned when we played the theme from 'My Three Sons'" and then "pounded out a little Latin-flavored number called 'Tico Tico'". I remember laughing out loud, and wishing for more when she was done.
This same voice - wry, ironic, cranky, always engaging, and often very, very funny - can be found sans audio (Vowell herself says her speaking voice is "straight out of the second grade") in this collection of short memoir pieces and essays.
I should point out here that I'm not an unbiased reviewer: I admire many of the same elements of our culture that Vowell does: Elvis, 50's Sinatra, "The Godfather", Mark Twain, "The Great Gatsby", Beat writing, authentic music with an edge. So if Vowelll were in my high school I would have wanted very much to have compared notes when she was not performing "Tico Tico". But regardless of YOUR passions, there's plenty to enjoy in this book from a fresh new voice with a quirky but consistently insightful take on our culture.
Humor is so hard to pull off well in writing - and Vowell has fabulous timing and delivery. I'll look forward to her next book - where perhaps she can more consciously try to tie together memorable snapshots like these into a more unified whole. Even here, however, the book adds up to more than the sume of its component parts.
I liked Vowell's line that "'What is This Thing Called Love' is the driving question behind the entire Sinatra research project." Possibly her subsequent work could elaborate more overtly on her take of "What is This Thing Called Life?". In the meantime - this is a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable book, full of fresh and interesting takes on our culture from a rapidly maturing artist. I strongly recommend it.

Sardonic and Educational

If you taste for humor leans on the sardonic side -- this collection of essays by Sarah Vowell is for you. Vowell often finds herself to be the proverbial "fish out of water" with journeys that take her to many fascinating and diverse places such as Hoboken, NJ (home of Frank Sinatra), Walt Disney World, rock 'n roll "camp," and San Francisco "goth" clubs. You are guaranteed to be smiling or laughing out loud at some point as you read each essay.
But if fun is not all you are looking for, Vowell is also a walking encyclopedia. Vowell gives us a history lesson in two essays in particular. "Michigan and Wacker" is a virtual history of Chicago in 13 pages, while "What I See When I Look at a $20 Bill" is an intriguing take on the Trail of Tears which forced Native Americans out of Georgia to Oklahoma. Embarassingly, I learned more about this ugly chapter in American history than was taught to me in high school.
I recently had a chance to go to a Vowell reading (along with her NPR colleague, David Sedaris -- a wonderful pairing by the way). Vowell's speaking voice is very distinctive and made me enjoy reading this collection even more since I was able to "hear" her as I read. I encourage folks to seek her out on NPR to get the more complete Vowell experience.

This biography of Michael Collins (1890-1922) is the first since Tim Pat Coogan's definitive Michael Collins: The Man Who Made Ireland in 1992, and admirers of Collins will find verification here for their sentiments. Mackay takes us from Collins's birth in County Cork (his father was 75 when he was born) and shows how his childhood was influenced by the Fenianism of his father and uncles. He looks at Collins's 10 years in London working for the post office and financial institutions (1906-1916), noting that, through the experience, he came to know the British well. The author traces Collins as he fights in Dublin's General Post Office in 1916; his emergence as a leader in prison for the Easter Rising in 1916 (a "tiresome barrackroom lawyer" to his captors); and his return to Ireland to set up the IRA and his own counter-intelligence group. Mackay also examines the events of "Bloody Sunday" 1920, when Collins's security squad assassinated the entire British Secret Service in Dublin ("I paid them back in their own coin," said Collins); his part in the negotiations of the Irish-Anglo peace treaty and his own assassination. Mackay speculates that Collins and Moya Llewelyn Davies had a baby; focuses on his idea for a "Sinn Fein Air Force"; his threats to "invade" Northern Ireland; and his brilliance as Finance Minister (he shot British bank examiners). The movie Michael Collins has sparked a modest renaissance on the Irish leader. Mackay (William Wallace: Brave Heart, Trafalgar Square, 1996) illuminates Collins in all his shortcomings and glory. He underscores Collins's methods, especially his dominating physical size and his intense, sometimes bullying personality while gently suggesting that a more even-tempered leader might have achieved some of what Collins did without the abrasions. The author retells several anecdotes documenting that Collins was in poor health his last weeks and that his death was so easily avoidable as to suggest self-destruction. Mackay concludes with a bittersweet epilog, arguing that, had Collins lived, he could have navigated the failed diplomacy of the Twenties and would have led a united Ireland. A stirring, comprehensive life of the great Irish patriot. ``If you think you understand what's going on, you're just confused,'' says a graffito current in Belfast. The same is true of Irish history, a sprawling mess of tangled loyalties and shifting allegiances. The life of Michael Collins (18901922) exemplifies the tortured, bloody course of modern Irish history. A kindhearted and warm man who in his heyday cheerfully ordered the assassination of political and military opponents, Collins rose to international prominence as a leader of the Irish independence movement. He had first emerged as a leader during the Easter uprising of 1916, in which hundreds of combatants and civilians died, and which Collins later rued as an enterprise ``that was bungled terribly, costing many a good life.'' Mackay (Burns: A Biography of Robert Burns, 1993) carefully describes Collins's contributions to the Irish armed resistance movement against British rule, first as a guerrilla, and later as commanding general of the national army. Mackay is also good, for the most part, in recounting and analyzing the complex negotiations with England that led to the founding of the Irish Free State after a costly, vicious civil war in which Collins fell victim to a sniper's bullet. Collins's story cannot be told independently of that of his principal opponent, Eamon de Valera, who remarked after Collins's death, ``In the fullness of time history will record the greatness of Collins and it will be recorded at my expense.'' That much is true, but Mackay does not satisfactorily explore de Valera's character and motivations, and he remains a shadowy and somewhat sinister force. Neither does Mackay deal sufficiently with the charge of other historians that de Valera ordered Collins's assassination. He concludes, probably correctly, that the ambush in which Collins died was not intended specifically for him. Michael Collins: The Man Behind the Legend

This biography was my introduction to the life and times of Michael Collins and it was a good one, though not as detailed and extensively annotated as Tim Pat Coogan's. The author is clearly an admirer of Collins but the portrayal appears to be objective and covers all the biographical bases in Collins' life--the Irish childhood and indoctrination with nationalist ideals from family and teachers; the years between 15-25 working in London; the participation in the Easter Rebellion and imprisonment in Wales; the return to Ireland and rise to leadership in the War of Independence; and the transformation to statesman in the Treaty negotiations. What Mackay particularly brings to the portrait of Collins is a warmth that allows the reader to see the real man behind the legend--the interactions with the men and women who shared his struggle or who opposed him, and the reaction of his countrymen to his leadership and to his untimely death during the bitter Civil War at the hands of former comrades who in many cases still revered him. Overall, an engrossing read.

One of my favorites

I must have ready a dozen or so bios of Michael Collins in the past few years and this is one of my favorites. Some of them seem to spend so much time on Michael Collins, the administrator, that they don't pay enough attention to Michael Collins, the human being. If you have to read one, I recommend this one. If you want a more exhaustive bio, then read Tim Pat Coogan. My other favorite is by Frank O'Connor.

Collins the Thinker, Collins the Military Man

For anyone wishing to know more about the bombastic, bullish side of Michael Collins, look no further. James MacKay captures Collins' thoughts-- even the most flamboyant-- with style and verbal panache. It is clear that his work has been very heavily influenced by the biographies from Frank O'Connor and Tim Pat Coogan, but MacKay distinguishes himself by emphasizing Collins' personality and his military accomplishments. He describes Michael's physical stature (5'11" with a bulky build), Michael's nature (quick to laugh, quick to cry, quick to anger, and quick to make an apology), Michael's health (his bouts with pleurisy, Spanish flu, stomach and kidney problems), Michael's orderly manner (he hated pencil writing and signatures from rubber stamps), and Michael's many other contradictions. MacKay includes several b/w photos along with explorations of Michael's military brilliance, e.g. his ability to run an entire guerrilla war from the back of a bicycle. MacKay begins with Collins' boyhood and concludes with an epilogue regarding the aftermath of Collins' assassination. If you are curious about Michael Collins the man, I can strongly recommend MacKay's biography.

Picture to Proton, The Right Way Round

Anyone who has tried to teach MR to non-physicists is used to two dilemas.
How do you keep a student interested while you lay the "necessary groundwork" to explain MRI ?
How do you give craft an intuitive explanation without oversimplifications that can be hard to explain away later?
These authors find a way. They present MR in the way we experience it, starting with the questions everyone faces first about images, contrast resolutionm, and using those questions to guide a path to the mechanisms of image production, signal generation and manipulation.
The easy flowing style underlines the skill and credibility of the authors, while side boxes offer historical perspectives and deeper treatment of key topics.
IMHO, This the perfect first text, and a great desk reference for all MR users.

Good Basics

This book is excellent for people who have clinical experience and would like to delve more deeply into the physical world of MRI. The explanations are simple, yet still effective without obscuring the underlying physics. Basic relationships between fundamental quantities that govern image formation/quality are also made clear. However, this book is not for advanced MR students looking for theoretical formulations.

A good intro for fMRI folks, too

I had a biochemistry lecturer once who challenged the biologists in the audience on how it was they thought they could get away with only minimal understanding of chemistry when they were learning biochemistry. "After all," he told the class, "the longest part of the word is 'chemistry.'" He went on to demand that biochemistry be taught as rigorously as any other branch of chemistry; no short cuts. And so it is, I think, for functional MRI. FMRI depends not insignificantly on MRI to function. Furthermore, modern fMRI experiments can depend quite heavily on ancillary scan types, such as those used for voxel-based morphometry, diffusion imaging/tractography, perfusion imaging and so on. BOLD isn't all there is!

If you are planning on using fMRI in any serious manner for your research then I would suggest that you'd better get a jolly good grounding in MRI, too, or you can expect to struggle (and possibly have to rely on people like me to get your experiments done). But you may need a gentle place to start your (re)education. MRI: From Picture to Proton is as good a place as any to start. It is readable should you want to try learning on your own, or it could easily form a core text for an intro class (or discussion group) on MRI. It's accurate and contains a lot of useful advanced material in the many 'aside' boxes. Overall, it's a solid text to have on your desk for quick reference, and along with the fMRI books by Buxton and Huettel, Song & McCarthy, should support an fMRI researcher at the grad student or post-doc level.
