An administrator known for her innovative on-the-job thinking becomes the target of anonymous rumors about financial mismanagement of her department. The rumors are proven baseless but her boss decides that she can't work with "that woman" anymore and prevents her from attending key meetings. The administrator sees a cardiologist for the first time in her life because of increasing chest pain, and her family doctor prescribes antidepressants "to get her over the hump." The administrator whose identity is interwoven with her job and company is bewildered by what is happening to her at work and says she doesn't know who she is anymore.
A middle school student is the target of relentless name-calling and slurs by a group of other kids at school. The slurs include derogatory comments about his sexuality, appearance, and family. The taunting has increased over several months, and many teachers have witnessed it. The student was the subject of a recent conversation in the faculty lounge, where some faculty members said the student needed to "toughen up," while others expressed concern for his well-being. The student's main strategy has been to try and keep away from the group of kids, but he finds himself trusting fewer of his "friends," feeling both angry and sad, and having a hard time concentrating.
What features of these two situations are almost identical, and why are they both classic instances of workplace and school mobbing? Mobbing is not the same as bullying, as the authors of this volume explain with cogent analysis of the organizational and contextual frameworks within which mobbing always occurs. From the Salem witch trials to workers trying to do the best they can at work, to kids whose humiliation in school has made the headlines, the authors offer numerous illustrations of mobbing, followed by insightful analyses and discussions of lessons learned. Duffy and Sperry provide a wealth of research to demonstrate the devastating toll that mobbing takes on its victims, their families, and the organizations where it occurs. The authors painstakingly avoid simplistic solutions to mobbing, such as removing the "bad apples," and instead, move the conversation forward by showing how bold and compassionate organizational leadership is required to improve conditions for the benefit of both individuals and their organizations.

Review
"Duffy and Sperry have researched and addressed with great clarity a common, but little appreciated, societal problem- that of mobbing- which can occur in virtually any social organization. Indeed, they have gone a step further, studying the role of mobbing on mental and physical health. Because mobbing involves a group rather than individual dynamic, it is a ubiquitous, but insidious, form of trauma and can be expected to exact a high price on the health and well-being of its victims. This book is a comprehensive and invaluable addition to the literature on this common and vexing social problem." -- Robert Scaer, MD, author of The Trauma Spectrum and The Body Bears the Burden
"Publication of this book is something to celebrate, a landmark event in the development of a body of knowledge that substantially deepens our understanding of what happens to people in their jobs....This is a foundational piece of work, one that will be read for decades to come." -- Kenneth Westhues, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of Waterloo
"A fantastic, mesmerizing, encyclopedic narrative touching on every aspect of the phenomenon of mobbing, like no other single volume in the literature. The authors clearly have been in the trenches helping abused workers. Their advice is spot on and keenly oriented toward improving the individual victim's health and recovery from the mobbing assaults." -- Gary Namie, Director, Workplace Bullying Institute
"Scholarly and sensitive, Duffy and Sperry's book finetunes the concept of mobbing in a holistic manner, examining antecedents, processes, and consequences, as well as recommending interventions in instances of school and workplace mobbing. The inclusion of emergent thematic areas, beyond those conventionally associated with the discipline, enriches the contribution. An excellent teaching, research, and practitioner resource based on extensive literature, real-life examples, and insightful analyses, the book widens the discourse and highlights important avenues to be explored." -- Premilla D'Cruz, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India
"Duffy and Sperry achieve their goal to comprehensively contribute to an expanded awareness of the bullying and mobbing dynamics and their devastating effects in schools, workplaces, and other organizational settings. The authors pull together the vast scientific evidence of the last decade, offer poignant case stories, and provide clear-cut advice on how to stop mobbing." -- Noa Zanolli Davenport, co-author of Mobbing: Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace

Mobbing Reaction
By litlover
This fascinating but disturbing story of mobbing is like bullying with a key difference; it occurs within the auspices of the organizational structure. The authors, Drs. Duffy and Sperry, reveal exactly how the organization becomes implicit in the "mobbing" of one of its members. It begins as an organizational issue between one or more individuals with one of the individuals ending up as the target/victim. The mobber gains steam and recruits others in the organization to wage an insidious attack against an individual. Its trajectory becomes like a snowball that gains speed and size as it races downhill. The individual being mobbed becomes aware of the attack and suffers within the organizational infrastructure. To make matters worse, the person being mobbed is often highly intelligent, creative, skilled and makes an excellent contribution to the organization.
This alarming but common social process wreaks havoc on the individual's role in the organization. Their organizational identity, personal health, work, family, and relationships are negatively impacted. Drs. Duffy and Sperry give vivid examples of organizations where mobbing occurs at an all too frequent rate: hospitals, schools, colleges, businesses, condo associations, etc.
Readers of this book who have worked in organizations will recognize the process of mobbing and appreciate that the mobbing of a target member could never have been successful without the organization's support. After reading this book I reflected on situations that I now know were mobbings with devastating consequences for the victims. In one, an athletic coach became the target of other coaches and staff members to the detriment of his job. He left his coaching position and moved to another state. In another situation, a family was ostracized by some members of the community in which they lived. Their child and other children were physically injured in a traditional hazing ritual. The family chose to reveal what happened to their child and to the other children and the community became divided over the fall out. Although, the family had strong ties to their community they eventually moved.
Bullying is a well known social process that inflicts deep pain on those bullied. It has made national headlines and schools have implemented strategic anti-bullying programs. Mobbing is equally if not more painful for those hurt by it. The really hopeful part of Drs. Duffy and Sperry's book is that since organizations are involved in propelling mobbings, with increased awareness organizations can take the lead in stopping them.

Mobbing: Causes, Consequences and Solutions
By Patricia Munhall
This is an important book for understanding how workplace mobbing occurs and what happens when people get targeted for abuse at work. The authors do an outstanding job of describing in detail the traumatic effects of mobbing on targets/victims, both in the short and long terms. The book is filled with vivid illustrative case examples that show the insidiousness of the process of mobbing and the ostracism, isolation, and bewilderment of victims. Through the stories that the authors depict, you can actually feel and experience the loneliness and fear of mobbing victims. The heart of the book though is the authors' focus on the role of organizations in mobbing and how mobbing is essentially an organizational act. This book provides the opportunity for understanding the experience of mobbing at both the individual and organizational levels. If you or someone you know has or is having this unjust experience, this book is essential reading for the effective and well thought out solutions as well. If you want a healthy work environment this is MUST reading.

Mobbing: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions

Please allow that I add that much of the content within is really solid and useful for persons who have experienced Workplace bullying or Mobbing. Its a good book but the position at the end I dont buy. So if you want to try th e book do so. I am one who has experienced this mobbing and it is a legal issue - not mental health matter.
Solutions? Who paid this author to come up with the doozy that workplace Mobbing is a Mental Health issue?
Clearly someone paid her to obfuscate the real issue - Mobbing like bullying, discrimination targeting and harassment be it sexual or not - is not a mental health issue -These folks know precisely what they are doing and why. This is a legal issue and all these mobsters - Presidents, CEO's VPs Deans supervisors and willing workers or faculty must go to jail for violations of Federal and no doubt State Labor Laws. Mental Health sure later when the perpetrators are behind bars where they belong - but until Mobbing is exposed fully for what it is -- Unlawful and illegal -- the lawyers will never come to our support!!! Do you see how disingenuous this bogus Mental health position is??? SOrry Ms Duffy but your position is a lie!!
