Radiology has been transformed by new imaging advances and a greater demand for imaging, along with a much lower tolerance for error as part of the Quality & Safety revolution in healthcare. With a greater emphasis on patient safety and quality in imaging practice, imaging specialists are increasingly charged with ensuring patient safety and demonstrating that everything done for patients in their care meets the highest quality and safety standards.

This book offers practical guidance on understanding, creating, and implementing quality management programs in Radiology. Chapters are comprehensive, detailed, and organized into three sections: Core Concepts, Management Concepts, and Educational & Special Concepts. Discussions are applicable to all practice settings: community hospitals, private practice, academic radiology, and government/military practice, as well as to those preparing for the quality and safety questions on the American Board of Radiology's "Maintenance of Certification" or initial Board Certification Examinations. Bringing together the various elements that comprise the quality and safety agenda for Radiology, this book serves as a thorough roadmap and resource for radiologists, technicians, and radiology managers and administrators.

Review

Quality and Safety in Radiology is a very timely and well-planned book discussing the latest topics in an ever-increasingly important subsegment of radiology--quality and safety issues. In their excellent book, co-editors Hani H. Abujedeh and Michael A. Bruno discuss a variety of current topics that collectively comprise the arguably budding but important field of radiology quality and safety. The two editors--along with 47 nationally and internationally recognized experts--have created an up-to-date, easy-to-reference textbook covering a wide spectrum of quality and patient safety issues as they apply to diagnostic imaging. The goal of the authors was to create a reference text covering the essentials of quality and safety specifically geared to diagnostic radiology. The authors have brilliantly accomplished their goal with this well-organized and easy-to-read book. This excellent book is well priced; I highly recommend [it]. -Robert D. Stoffey, Radiology

Review

"Like early geographers of the Americas, the contributors to this book have undertaken a formidable challenge: to map a shifting legal terrain that is as intricate and varied as the book's continental scale would suggest. The authors, noted experts in comparative law and/or international relations, make it clear that there is no single "North American legal system." To the contrary, unlike our European allies, most 'North Americans' do not subscribe to a continental movement towards homogeneous norms. Nevertheless, as the authors in this book point out in discerning detail, the increasing interdependence of North American societies not only creates contentious fault lines , but also generates opportunities for North America's overlapping legal regimes to interact harmoniously. The book, in dealing with the relatively neglected subject of North American comparative law, makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the underlying forces that influence continental shifts in legal regimes." - Stephen Zamora, Leonard B. Rosenberg Professor of Law and director, Center for U.S. and Mexican Law, University of Houston Law Center

It’s almost impossible to talk about Oakland football without bringing up the name of the consummate Raider, Tom Flores. Legendary for both his skills on the field and his coaching guidance from the sideline, Flores has been an integral part of the Raiders organization since its inception in 1960. Now Flores shares the greatest stories and anecdotes from his time with the team in Tales from the Oakland Raiders Sideline. Flores relives the heart-stopping thrills and adrenaline-surging passion of Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII, and provides behind-the-scenes humor from greats such as former coach and owner Al Davis and coach Eddie Erdelatz. Flores also shares tales of other Raiders greats such as Billy Cannon, Jim Otto, John Matuszak, Bo Jackson, and more. Without a doubt this is a must-have for any Raiders fan.

Nice, but it lacks in something.
By Cameron
I have really enjoyed learning about Helen Keller and her fantastic "Teacher" (quite literally), Annie Sullivan. Both are very amazing women of their time, and still are.

Here is my review on this book:

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was a very healthy baby, until, at the age of 19 months, she was struck both blind and deaf after an attack of scarlet fever, and therefore mute as a result.

Because she could not communicate verbally, she had invented over sixty of her own signs. And because she could not say what all she wanted, she would eplode in a rage of anger when someone did not understand her signs. Finally, she became so destructive that her parents had to do something. So, Helen's father, Captain Arthur Keller wrote to Perkins School for the Blind, in Boston, Massachusetts. The director of Perkins sent Miss Annie Mansfield Sullivan to come and teach Helen to behave and communicate. After about a month, Annie broke through to Helen.

A few years later, there was "The Frost King" incident. Helen had wrote a story that she had thought she had made up herself, but she soon learned that she had NOT in fact, come up with it, but a lady by the name of Margeret Canby had written a story very similar indeed, called "Frost Fairies." You can read more about this in this book.

After much effort, Helen entered The Cambridge School for Young Ladies. After a lot of problems during her three years there, she and Annie entered Radcliffe College in 1900. Helen goes into much detail into about how hard her studies were there, but, because she was still was schooling there, she does not mention that she graduated "cum laude."

My review on this edition:

It was nice, but I would swear that there are some very nice parts that have been edited out that I remember there being in another edition I read before. I have to ask: Didn't they think John Macy did a good enough job? Also, stangely enough, even though the second half of this book is all of the letters Helen wrote from 1887 to 1904, this edition does not include Annie's letters to Mrs. Sophia C. Hopkins during her first year in Tuscumbia.

One last little thing, in regards to the writing:

I warn you: Helen does not seem to know how to tell time! You read one chapter thinking she's still a young girl, and then she mentions her age, and you're like: I thought she was still eight, not fourteen! If you really want to learn about her relationship with Annie, I suggest you read her biography of Annie, called "Teacher: Anne Sullivan Macy." Helen could write much better by then (as in like telling time). I also suggest "Helen Keller: a Life." It is an excellant book, it almost seems to be a duel biography; a very good "page-turner."

If you still aren't sure that you want to buy this book, go to: [...]. Click on "Helen Keller," and when you see a box that says "Related Links," you should see "The Story of my Life." Click on it, and you will be reading the world famous Helen Keller's autobiography.

An Excellent Book to add to your collection
By Chayan Banerjee
I found this book in a shop in Calcutta, and decided to buy it.This edition from Enriched Classics is a good one, and it gives good notes and footnotes of difficult meanings. The story bu Helen herself, is a pleasure to read, and it seems impossible to see, how a blind and deaf person could write such a thing. Her words are much flowery with great beauty, and her love for God is really touching. The book feels complete with her many letters. Don't think twice,I suggest you buy it!

Review

The insular character of Britain delayed the creation of professional police until the 19th century. This volume traces the course of British amateur policing until that time, at which point it deals with the foundation of the London Metropolitan Police and efforts to create similar professional urban institutions in New York and Montreal.

Due attention is also given to the fact that very different conditions in rural Ireland necessitated the creation of a para-military type of force, which in turn served as the model for police in the countryside throughout the Empire.

The nature of these derivative organizations and the way they were able to serve the needs of such varied societies as India, Australia, South Africa and Canada are examined. The several alternatives to Irish-style police which were attempted in the United States - Texas Rangers, private detective agencies, sheriffs, marshalls, and vigilante committees - are also considered. The point of this work is to present a comparative study of law enforcement agencies with a Common Law tradition working in otherwise considerably different countries.

Last Stop Vienna: A Novel, by Andrew Nagorski

Germany in the 1920s, in the early days of Hitler and the Nazi party, was a country plunging into darkness and violence. Andrew Nagorski has written the story of a doomed generation, of evil, hopelessness, sexual perversion and murder that set the stage for the ultimate destruction of a society. But in a stunning denouement, a young Nazi brownshirt, acting out of passion and revenge, changes the course of history.

Karl Naumann, a German teenager who has lost his father and brother in World War I, has tried to find a place in a defeated, demoralized and anarchic Berlin. Impressed by the returning veterans who refuse to lay down their arms and fight running battles with communist revolutionaries, and alone and adrift on the streets, he is recruited to their cause and camaraderie. He is sent to Munich, where he works his way up the ranks to become one of Adolf Hitler's bodyguards, a storm trooper.

The new movement is increasingly split between Hitler and rival leaders, including Karl's mentor, Otto Strasser, a real-life Nazi activist. As the schism within the party widens, the battles intensify and Hitler asserts his dominance, Karl must determine where his loyalty lies. He has fallen in love with a nurse, Sabine, whom he marries, but he is infatuated with Hitler's young niece, Geli Raubal, who is caught up in a deeply disturbing sexual relationship with her uncle.

Obsessed by the seductive and elusive Geli, Karl is startled by what he sees through her of the dark core of Hitler's personality. When Geli finally summons up the courage to leave her uncle, it is too late. Soon after, she is found dead in their apartment, a gun in her hand, allegedly a suicide. Karl believes that Hitler has murdered her. He follows him to Geli's grave in Vienna where their final confrontation takes place. Last Stop Vienna presents a chilling and suspenseful look at what might have been.

From Publishers Weekly
Nagorski imagines a fascinating alternate ending to Adolf Hitler's ill-fated affair with his niece, Geli, in this fast-moving, riveting debut novel about a naive young stormtrooper who inadvertently becomes the fuhrer's romantic rival. After losing his brother in WWI, Karl Naumann joins the fledgling vigilante group that eventually becomes Hitler's notorious brownshirts. Despite his delicate appearance, Naumann instantly takes to the violence of the job. Working with Hitler's pamphlet publisher, Otto Strasser, Naumann rises through the ranks, and shortly after meeting Hitler, finds himself chaperoning Hitler's precocious teenage niece during a couple of brief outings. Naumann responds to Geli's playful flirtation; before long he finds himself infatuated, despite his recent marriage. The affair seems innocuous, but when Hitler begins to monopolize his young niece's attention with his twisted erotic demands, Naumann realizes that his life and Geli's are in danger. Naumann's interior monologues can be stiff ("my return to Berlin was not at all as I had envisaged it"), but Nagorski paints a complex portrait of a vengeful young man incapable of resisting his own base impulses, yet ultimately guided by a strong sense of compassion and justice. A former Berlin bureau chief for Newsweek, Nagorski captures the city faithfully, convincingly imagining the to and fro of everyday life in the 1920s. The book offers a fascinating account of the power struggles between Hitler and rival Nazi leaders, but focuses primarily on the small events and individual actions that lay the foundation for Nazi rule.

From Booklist
Nagorski is a senior editor at Newsweek International and the author of two nonfiction books. His first novel evokes, with sharp tension, Germany in the 1920s--specifically, the burgeoning growth and appeal of the Nazi Party. At the time, Germany was beaten down by World War I and reparations, and young Berliner Karl Naumann is not unusual in his ennui and anger. His leanings lead him to Munich, where he becomes a member of Hitler's storm troopers. Karl marries, but he also becomes involved with Hitler's niece, Geli, and her death--presumed by Karl to be at the hands of her rising-star uncle--prompts him to take history into his hands. Nagorski's novel then evolves into a very intriguing what-if tale. Brad Hooper

"An astonishing, breathtaking tale of passion and foreboding. Andrew Nagorski's main characters—a young Nazi brownshirt who turns against Hitler, and Hitler's tormented niece -- are unforgettable. The outcome of their story makes clear that there was nothing predetermined in Hitler's rise to power. This first novel is frightening, illuminating, and brilliant." (Pat Conroy, author of "Beach Music" )

"Last Stop Vienna is a fascinating, haunting tale about the way one man can make history—or unmake it." (Christopher Dickey, author of "Innocent Blood" )

"Andrew Nagorski has written a strikingly original work of historical fiction. With a finely etched portrait of a stripped and humiliated Weimar Germany as his background, Nagorski traces the transformation of an 'ordinary' German into a Nazi brownshirt. Nagorski's portrait of the ascendant Adolf Hitler sexually preying on his own niece is chilling." (Kati Marton, author of "Hidden Power" )

"An intriguing rebellion of imagination against historical reality." (Bernhard Schlink, author of "The Reader" )

Read This Book!
By A Customer
I derive no greater reading pleasure than when I learn something while being highly entertained. Andrew Nagorskis Last Stop Vienna is an amazing novel that manages to teach as well as engage. The rise and rule of Adolf Hitler is the most notorious tale of the twentieth century, yet how many people truly understand the dire social, economic, and political climate in 1920s and 1930s Germany that enabled the emergence of a man like Hitler? Perhaps better than any novelist in recent history, Nagorski does. Through the eyes of young and idealist Nazi Brownshirt, Karl Naumann, Nagorski tells a story that demonstrates in eerie and vivid detail how readily evil can rise out of desperation. Last Stop Vienna is not only a compelling book but also an important one. We live in an age where the conditions in many countries throughout the world are jarringly parallel to those of pre-World War II Germany. It would behoove us all to gain an understanding of such matters. Andrew Nagorski has provided us a great service by making it easy and enjoyable to edify his readers using his 288-page gem, Last Stop Vienna.

Thrilling and Edifying
By Raphael
A vivid and engaging piece of historical fiction, Nagorski's tale traces the life of a young Karl Naumann against the stark backdrop of Germany's decaying liberal order. What begins as a coming of age story quickly maps to the increasingly dramatic events culminating in the Nazi takeover. But Naumann's investment in the events shaking Germany take on an entirely different character as he meets -- and falls in love with -- Hitler's troubled niece, Geli. Nagorski's prose is absorbing, and his grasp of the period's history is excellent. At turns thrilling and edifying, it's a story not to be missed.

LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT
By Jen Senko
This book was recommended to me by my mother and to be honest, the only reason I listened to her was because I liked the cover. I'm really not a history buff but I have to say I was surprised at how much I loved Last Stop Vienna - and I learned an incredible amount. I couldn't stop reading it and, instead of skipping over the historical descriptions as I usually do, I was truly fascinated by Nagorski's ability to write so clearly and incisively, that I had a blast reading all of it! Of course, I relished the love affairs and love triangles and all the intrigue...especially when it came to Hitler's own perversions that I didn't know much about before! I wish they had added more sexual intrigue in the history courses I hated so much in college. I'm telling everyone about this book!

It was a nice, fun story. I enjoyed it until the end, where a couple of things bothered me.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Two oil companies are merging. The two owners of the companies are Red and John. They each have one adult child, Ivy and Will who are in their 30s. Red and John want to retire and have Ivy and Will work together to run the combined company and if possible get married. Ivy and Will are not interested in meeting each other in advance. Red makes a wager with Ivy, betting her she cannot run a hamburger joint for 30 days, living on minimum wage in a trailer in a small town. He offers her a Cadillac and vacation time. She takes the bet. She must use a false name. At the same time, John makes a similar bet with his son Will. Will must go to the town Ivy is in, find a minimum wage job for a month and also use a false name. Will takes the bet. Ivy hires Will as a cook for the month. He pays part of his salary to rent a bedroom in the trailer she's living in. They work and live together for a month, not knowing the true identity of each other.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
My feelings at the end of the book were lovely, sweet and pleasant story, but I was annoyed with two things described in spoilers below. The good guys steal and laugh about it, and the author used a weak excuse for conflict.

DATA:
Story length: 185 pages. Since there is no sexual content, this book might be appropriate for teenagers. Setting: current day Texas and Oklahoma. Copyright: 2004. Genre: contemporary romance.

CAUTION SPOILERS:

I don't like main character good guys stealing without remorse. In the interest of telling a good story, I'm ok with the good guy stealing from an enemy, or stealing food or medicine to survive, or even stealing a girl he's in love with, but not this. This is stealing property for convenience and entertainment. Joyce is getting married. She forgot to order rose petals, and the local florist is out of roses. So, her sister April picks all the roses from a neighbor's yard, planning to tell the neighbor that the grasshoppers did it. Joyce, April and Ivy laugh about it. After reading the book, I thought more about that than I thought about the story. It bothered me. I wouldn't have minded it as much if they had left a note with compensation for the roses.

The two fathers required that Will and Ivy use false names and not tell anyone who they were. Later, when they discover each others' true identity, they are angry with each other because each feels the other lied about who they were. This anger continues for days. The anger should have been directed at the fathers who required the lies, not each other. This was a weak excuse for conflict. I wish the author would have come up with something different.

Good Clean Fun!
By Mary Ellen
Delightful, very enjoyable reading.
You can probably guess the happy ending, but don't know how it will get there.
In order to keep their true identities hidden, Cameo and Sonny agree on a no questions asked policy.
"Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a present."
How would you live your life if you lived only to enjoy today (but while working 12 hours a day 6 days a week)?
This is a fun, sweet book (no sex). I will keep it on my shelf to read again.

The Wager by Carolyn Brown
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed this book. There may have been one or two weaknesses but it was a good read.

Ivy and Will, both heirs to an oil company have never met and are about to start work together. Before they do, their fathers make a bet with each of them that they couldn't make it in the "real world" working for a month. They take the bet and the
fun begins - at a hamburger place in a small town. Both have, at their fathers insistence changed their identity for the month
so neither knows who the other is. The ending is not surprising, but satisfying all the same. A nice sweet read suitable for all ages.

Molly hates rainy days. The gray sky, the soggy wait for the school bus, they seem to make everyone grumpy. Everyone except her friend Sophie, who shows Molly the magic she has been missing.

The simple, poetic language in this lovely book takes readers on a journey from the girls' first tentative steps into the drizzle to a rain-drenched romp in a puddle. The lyrical text is perfectly matched by the joyful watercolor paintings, which capture not only the color and beauty of a rainy day, but the warm interactions of the girls' blossoming friendship. An exuberant homage to finding pleasure where it's unexpected, the power of imagination, and the joys of friendship, I Love the Rain will have readers singing, "Sun, sun, go away!"

PreSchool-Grade 1–Molly hates the rain but her friend revels in it. Putting her umbrella aside, Sophie exclaims, "What's so great about being dry?" As the girls wait for the school bus, Molly is eventually caught up in her pal's imaginative vision of the weather's effects. As leaves get swept like runaway rafts down the street gutter, Molly gamely adds, "Rafts for ants?" Now she joins in the fun as they pretend to ride racecar raindrops down the bus window or lead a parade down the steamy street with rain like confetti on their faces. Molly's Mom's warning, "‘Careful, girls! You're going to get all wet!'" allows her daughter to hark back to Sophie's initial statement and to declare her newfound love for the rain. The sensual text has an easygoing, almost stream-of-consciousness flow. Although it is occasionally challenging to determine who is speaking, the overall reading experience is one of poetry in motion. The loose, scratchy pen-and-ink drawings, augmented with vibrant watercolors, lend an evocative atmosphere to the text. The girls with their brightly colored umbrellas provide contrast to the more subdued saturated backgrounds. The author and artist have created both a concrete and an interpretive vision that captures the delight of childhood and an appreciation for nature.– Martha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI

PreS-Gr. 2. "I hate the rain!" grumbles red-haired Molly, huddled miserably under her red umbrella. "What's so great about being dry?" asks her friend Sophie, umbrella down and mouth open to catch the raindrops. As the girls make their way home from school, exuberant Sophie encourages Molly to spark her imagination and see gleaming beauty and fun games in the rainy streets: leaves floating down the gutter are "rafts for ants"; raindrops charging down the school bus windows are race cars. By the time Molly's mother meets the girls at the bus stop, a soaking wet, delighted Molly is dancing and singing. Davenier's watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, reminiscent of the artist's striking work in C. M. Millen's Low-Down Laundry Line Blues (1999), beautifully capture a girl's transformation from drooping depression to high-spirited joy with just a few swooping lines. Teachers and parents will want this to liven up gloomy, rainy-day story hours or to start discussions about moods and feelings: the spare text's lively dialogue will read well to a crowd. Excellent kidlit.

Margaret Park Bridges, I Love the Rain (Chronicle, 2005)

I Love the Rain is the kind of kids' book I stumble upon all too rarely, and the kind (doesn't it always work this way?) I think should be the most common: this is a book about possibilities. It's about imagination and playing pretend and all those things kids do when they're faced with some minor misfortune and need to find a way to turn it into something useful, or at least pleasurable. You don't like the rain? Make it into something else. It's still rain, but all the sudden it's a great deal more fun. I'm not sure whether it's just a positive side effect or whether it happens by definition, but when you stumble upon this sort of book, the sort that's about imagination and playing let's pretend, you always find great language, stuff that borders on the poetic, stuff that's rooted in the image. I've read a lot of kids' books recently, and I think that, from the standpoint of the writing alone, this may be the best of them I've run across since Randall Jarrell's The Bat-Poet (which I found in 1999). Definitely one for the kids' bookshelf. ****

Rain rain come again!
By thewaspyfeminist
Molly hates the rain. But her best friend Sophie does not...and Sophie is about to show Molly that the rain is not actually depressing, it's fantastic. This is an adorable picture book that demonstrates imagination and friendship and carefree youth. A puddle isn't just a puddle; it's a face with raindrop freckles. Slowly over the course of the book Molly comes to see that the rain isn't a pain, it's great and even better than "Rain rain go way" is "Sun sun go away." I really liked the watercolor illustrations as well.

Cute book
By sweetk22
Cute book for kids. I'm sure they will enjoy reading about playing in the rain and seeing how the girls in the book use their imaginations to have fun in and with the rain. I just wished the book would have been longer and with more exploration in the book. Most of the conversations between the girls was minimal, which did give the book this "sing-song" feel, and cute. I just wanted to see a little more to the book, because how many times do you get to play in the rain, without a mom, dad, or other adult totally spoiling it for you?

Literacy and Mothering: How Women's Schooling Changes the Lives of the World's Children (Child Development in Cultural Context), by Robert

Winner of the 2013 Eleanor Maccoby Award from APA Division 7

Women's schooling is strongly related to child survival and other outcomes beneficial to children throughout the developing world, but the reasons behind these statistical connections have been unclear. In Literacy and Mothering, the authors show, for the first time, how communicative change plays a key role: Girls acquire academic literacy skills, even in low-quality schools, which enable them, as mothers, to understand public health messages in the mass media and to navigate bureaucratic health services effectively, reducing risks to their children's health. With the acquisition of academic literacy, their health literacy and health navigation skills are enhanced, thereby reducing risks to children and altering interactions between mother and child. Assessments of these maternal skills in four diverse countries - Mexico, Nepal, Venezuela, and Zambia - support this model and are presented in the book.

Chapter 1 provides a brief history of mass schooling, including the development of a bureaucratic Western form of schooling. Along with the bureaucratic organization of healthcare services and other institutions, this form of mass schooling spread across the globe, setting new standards for effective communication - standards that are, in effect, taught in school. Chapter 2 reviews the demographic and epidemiological evidence concerning the effects of mothers' education on survival, health, and fertility. In this chapter, the authors propose a model that shows how women's schooling, together with urbanization and changes in income and social status, reduce child mortality and improve health. In Chapter 3, the authors examine the concept of literacy and discuss how its meanings and measurements have been changed by educational research of the last few decades. Chapter 4 introduces the four-country study of maternal literacy. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 present the findings, focusing on academic literacy and its retention (Chapter 5), its impact on maternal health literacy and navigation skills (Chapter 6), and changes in mother-child interaction and child literacy skills (Chapter 7). Chapter 8 presents a new analysis of school experience, explores policy implications, and recommends further research.

Review

Winner of the 2013 Eleanor Maccoby Award from APA Division 7

"'Women's schooling is not a panacea,' LeVine and colleagues conclude, but it is still likely to be an important part of the solution to the problems of still-high child mortality and rapid population growth in the twenty-first century. Literacy and Mothering provides the most sophisticated account yet of how this process may work. This is a remarkable achievement, and the authors have gone about it in a lucid way, spelling out each step in their model clearly and weighing alternative explanations. The book should reinvigorate research on the topic of schooling and demographic change and inspire new collaborations between education researchers and demographers... It deserves attention from all social scientists and everyone who works on policy relevant to education and population." -- Edward G.J. Stevenson, Population & Development Review

"My conclusion is unmitigated praise for the research and development of theory
represented in Literacy and Mothering. It is a book that provides a solid foundation for
answering important questions about how literacy is affecting the children of the world and
provides encouragement to involve girls in schooling, trusting that the benefits will be there
even years later. LeVine et al. also generously reveal the progression of their thinking over
the years, especially how it fits into the greater historical context." -- PsycCRITIQUES

"This is an immensely valuable book for demographers in general and especially for the many demographers who have long been fascinated by the black box of the education of females. [... A]n extremely useful reference work as well as an educational resource for those of us still grappling with the meanings of schooling and education. The authors are to be congratulated for bringing their vast knowledge and experience of the latest theories and methods in education to bear upon some central quantitative findings in demography. I would see this book as [...] fleshing out so well what it is about maternal behaviour that changes with education and leads to such profound demographic and social transformations." -Alaka Malwade Basua, Population Studies: A Journal of Demography

"The research presented in this book brings a new perspective to the recurrent analysis of social change in the developing world during the second half of the twentieth century. It focuses on the communicative socialization of girls in schools and, years later, how their language and literacy learning affect (or may affect) their behaviors as mothers. This unusual and well-researched book illuminates processes through which the expansion of schooling might influence children's health and education and ultimately their survival." --Gabrielle Oliveira, Comparative Education Review

"Social scientists, humanists, and historians have long speculated about the impact of literacy on the way we think. Robert Levine and his colleagues show that literacy has an impact not just on thinking, but on the way that children are raised, and on whether they live or die. Girls who learn to read in school are better able - when they become mothers - to ensure the survival, health and educational development of their children. Literate mothers are more likely to understand and follow health guidelines and better able to communicate with bureaucratic medical services. In a sweeping narrative, Levine and his colleagues describe the dramatic spread of Western schooling since World War II, the ensuing rise in female literacy, and its ultimately critical role in improving children's lives. The book is a compelling example of how thoughtful anthropological and psychological analysis can illuminate global historical change." -- Paul L. Harris, Professor, Harvard Graduate School of Education

"This book is truly exemplary and an outstanding study - the best in this field. Improvements in literacy and associated changes in communication processes cause gains in women's and children's health, declines in fertility, increased economic status, and changes in mother-child interaction and children's schooling. This study helps us understand why and how this happens. It is a model for how to undertake applied, empirical, and evidence-rich policy-relevant work. This study is richly interdisciplinary and uses integrated qualitative and quantitative methods. It moves across levels of analysis from global trends in formal education and the history of the spread of schooling, to national and local classrooms, and the everyday interactions, homes, and lives of mothers and children in local communities." -- Thomas S. Weisner, Professor of Anthropology, Departments of Psychiatry and Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles

"Poor societies, aided by the West, have invested mightily in the schooling of girls over the past six decades, yielding dramatic benefits. But until now we simply haven't known how the school institution-even low-quality education-magically alters the social and cognitive agility of young women. Literacy and Mothering unlocks this mystery, shining a bright light on the novel skills, norms, and ideals that modern schooling imparts, an engaging bicultural versatility." -- Bruce Fuller, former World Bank sociologist, and Professor, Education & Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley

"Robert LeVine and his collaborators have written an impressive review of their decades of research in developing countries on the impact of maternal schooling and literacy on mothering. Their work is utterly convincing on the core issue - that literacy and the cognitive changes involved have important direct effects on mothering behavior, and account for much of the modern worldwide improvement in the survival and health of mothers and their children." -- John W. Meyer, Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, Stanford University

One of the best books in educational research
By Luciano Eiken Senaha
It breaks the boundaries of Educational Psychology, Educational Sociology and Economics, showing that, not always a given specific data - such as literacy - is restricted to research on teaching methods.
