About the Author
Yaroslav M. Blanter is an Associate Professor in the theory group at the Delft University of Technology. Previous to this he was a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Karlsruhe and a Senior Assistant at the University of Geneva.

Yuli V. Nazarov is a theorist at Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft University of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. from Landau Institute for theoretical physics in 1985, and has worked in the field of quantum transport since the late 1980s.

Provides an Overall Background

Aimed at the first years of graduate school, this is one of the first books on the subject to be aimed at covering the entire field rather than specialized sub-segments. It is also intended that the book will be useful at the researcher level where specialists in one field may get an overall background. The book has been used by the authors at Delft University of Technology since 2002.

The book does not have the standard set of questions for the student at the end of the chapters. Instead it has what the authors call Control Questions that are presented just after a subject is covered. These questions are to provide a check to the student to insure that he understands what has been presented.

The book presents an extensive mathematical/theoretical treatment of the subject. It provides a common baseline from which the specialist can move in several directions.

Paul Breiter has done it again!

I agree wholeheartedly with the Hawaii reviewer's statement that Mr. Breiter has once again brought forth the crystalline Dhamma from the late Ajahn Chah. Everything Arises, Everything Falls Away is another brilliant compilation of insights from this great teacher, but Breiter doesn't stop there.

No, in this new book, there are also stories about life with Ajahn Chah from this former monk who knew him as well as any Westerner, living and working with him and also translating for him in Thailand and when Ajahn Chah visited the U.S. These stories are just as enlightening as the Ajahn's direct teachings, but for those of us who like a little story here and there -- which was, after all, how the Buddha himself taught -- these little sprinklings of what it was like to be around this tough, enlightened being are a wonderful balm after the hard work of trying to internalize the Dhamma.

In short, this book is absolutely vital for anyone who loves the Dhamma as taught in the Thai forest tradition, or for anyone who loves to hear stories about enlightened masters of any tradition. Another simply brilliant job of bringing Ajahn Chah's words to the West by Paul Breiter.

Buddhism illustrated for Thailand's rural poor

Ajahn Chah was not a writer. He was born in a fishing village in northeast Thailand in 1918 and spent many years there speaking to farmers and fishermen. Many of these talks were recorded, transcribed and later translated and compiled by one of his western students, Paul Breiter.

Ajahn Chah spoke simply for a simple audience. To illustrate his points, he spoke of fields, ponds, rivers, fish, frogs, dogs, plowing, planting, and harvesting. He used folk tales and parables. Here he speaks of how we are responsible for our own suffering:

"Really, someone who suffers when living alone is foolish. Someone who suffers when living with others is foolish. It's like chicken turds: if you carry them around by yourself, they stink. If you keep them when you're among others, they stink. You carry the rotten things with you."

On the futility of becoming overly preoccupied in affairs of the world, he reminds his audience of the beetle, scratching in the earth:

"It can scratch up a pile that's a lot bigger than itself, but it's still only a pile of dirt. If it works hard, it makes a deep hole in the ground, but it's only a hole in dirt. If a buffalo drops a load of dung there, it will be bigger than the beetle's pile of earth, but it still isn't anything that reaches to the sky. It's all dirt. Worldly accomplishments are like this. No matter how hard the beetles work, they're just involved in dirt, making holes and piles"

Translating the colloquialisms must have been challenging, but, as you can see from the above, Paul Breiter has done a magnificent job capturing Ajahn Chah's voice, making "Everything Arises, Everything Falls Away" a wonderful volume for even those who may have been practicing the dharma for many years.

For those new to Buddhism, this would be an amusing and enlightening introduction, not only because of the colorful language but also for the way in which Ajahn Chah reduces the message of Buddhism to a few easy-to-grasp concepts. He seemed to like reminding his audience that Buddhism was not all that difficult to understand, and he did this through the message of impermanence. As he remarks in a teaching on meditation:

"The way I practice medication is not very complicated - just this. This is what it all comes down to: `It's uncertain'. Everything meets at this point."

Beautiful Teachings and Wonderful Stories...

Sometimes Buddhist teachings can seem inaccessable to Westerners, but this book is an exception. It contains tremendous insights into uncertainty and impermanence and solid teachings on dealing with the unsatisfactory aspects of life. It is not, however, just a book of dry teachings. There are lively stories and snapshots of monastery life that add an extra dimension to the book. I also enjoyed the softly humorous aspects of many of Ajahn Chah's teachings. This book is well-written and hard to put down. While perhaps not appropriate as an introductory text, I give it my unreserved recommendation for people with any background knowledge of Buddhism.

Very digestible. Easy to read, and easy to remember. It really depends on your learning style, but I find the Case Files series better than trying to memorize lists and lists and lists that are found in other sources.

About the Author

Alexandra Heilbron worked as an editor of The Avonlea Traditions Chronicle, a magazine for fans of L.M. Montgomery, for five years. In 2000, she won a writing award from the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation for her first book, The Lucy Maud Montgomery Album. Her work has appeared in many magazines, including TV Times, Tribute, Maclean's, Kindred Spirits, and Canadian Wildlife. Alexandra lives in Toronto.

Maud Montgomery Comes to Life!

Where to begin? Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote one of my favorite books, "Anne of Green Gables". A book that inspired many lovely childhood dreams. The dreams became a reality when I went to Prince Edward Island in 1998 - Searching for Anne, Green Gables and all the magic of LM Montgomery!
While on the Island I bought a number of books and visited many Anne related sites. All of this made me want more! The other books I read were well written and informative; but, this book about Maud by Alexandra Heilbron grabbed my attention from the very first page. I enjoyed her question and answer approach. This way we got the actual thoughts and feeling of the people she interviews. We did not get the authors (AH) thoughts and feelings on LMM. Once I started reading it was very hard to put down.
I like the fact that Alexandra Heilbron actually went to the Island to do her interviews ; it provided such authenticity to her writing. To actually show pictures of the people she interviewed was something new. And, there were new LMM pictures , a delight to see; when so many other publications use the same photos over and over again.
Towards the back of the book there are examples of some of Maud's ( she preferred being called "Maud") poetry. Charming. There are reviews of Maud's work written at the time of her books publication. There is even a published review that Maud did herself about writing and other authors! As I said, I found it hard to put this book down.
It is obvious from the way the book was written that the author (AH) is well acquainted with her material, many small details add to the charm of the book. I like the physical size of it, too. Large, soft covered and easy to hold when reading.
On a scale of 1 to 10; I give it a 9 1/2. Why not a 10? Because if I give it the highest mark, Ms. Heilbron might not write another LMM book. I sincerely hope she does, this one was a delight!

The real L.M. Montgomery?

Having read all L.M. Montgomery's books, including the autobiographical ones - the Journals and The Alpine Path - I jumped at the chance to find out more about her through people who have actually known her, so this book was a must for me.

Well, I certainly found out some more about her, but it is not another piece of the puzzle, as Ms Heilbron promises in her introduction. What I found instead was that Lucy Maud mastered the trick of projecting a certain image of herself to perfection. For in spite of all the physical and other complaints she writes about, the occasional nastiness to some people, the peculiar relationship with her husband and so on, she still manages to project an image of herself in The Journals as a very capable, humorous, strong, erudite and above all carefully dressed LADY (in capitals). And if one reads the reports of her relatives and neighbours closely, apart from a few barely noticeable dissident notes that is exactly how they remember her! So she goes on fooling us all, including the author/editor of this book, and we still don't know the real L.M. Montgomery.

I will be eternally grateful to Alexandra Heilbron for conceiving of the idea for this book and tracing down all those elderly people before it was too late. But asking the same questions over and over again - and often getting the same answers - becomes a little monotonous and the questions themselves sometimes seem rather irrelevant. Still, the book is a welcome addition to my L.M. Montgomery shelf.

Good reading

For all L.M. lovers this is good reading. I wish that the author had used a few more leading questions. Most of the questions seemed to be about how she dressed. This book gave a little insight into L.M.'s relationships with her children. A fascinating woman with such a sad life, I wish she were here to

give her a little sympathy. She needed it.

A Great First Step

This book is designed to jump start the reader's experience with Mathematica. Since people learn best by example, reviewing "basic" math examples (in Algebra, Calculus, and Linear Algebra) provides a "painless" introduction to the new environment. This book is not intended to be complete in any sense. But it WILL make you feel comfortable with the daunting new interface of Mathematica.

This is the only Mathematica book that I have finished; it was a great introduction, and I still use as a reference. If you are thinking about buying Mathematica--DON'T get it without some introductory book, and this one is a good start.

PS: For Matlab I recommend Learning MATLAB

an excellent introduction

I read through this quickly today and found it very informative, if alittle short
on 'wow' factor. Learning Mathmatica depends on gaining a command of its
quirky syntax and i thought the author did a good job of guiding the reader through
an interesting array of examples in precalc, calc and lin alg, nicely driving home
various syntax issues in multiple contexts. Graphing and Manipulate functions get
special attention. The threshold issue on help books is "is this better than the
documentation". The answer is a decided yes. I might have wished for some extended
problem examples--like newton's method, or pendelum problem--that lend themselves
to the mathmatica notebook format. Minus one star for an unsatisfactory introduction
to wolfram programming. Overall--a very readable and likable presentation of an
exciting software. Addendum: added back a star after visiting the website and
downloading the reference notebooks--an awesome collection of syntax.

Evaluation of "Mathematica: a Handbook for Precalculus....

Version is outdated. Stops with Mathematica version six; current version is nine.
Programming section still quite valid, as are parts of chapters that are version independent. It is well written at a level that can be understood readily by beginning students - most particularly by those who have older versions of the software installed
Not as useful as updated version would have been.
I realize that it is difficult to keep up with program versions in a printed book. I should have been more observant in perusing the book, before ordering it.
