Thoughts on Grendel Omnibus

Most of the stories included here are great, particularly the classic "Devil by the Deed" and the recent "Behold the Devil." However, I would not recommend this volume for first time GRENDEL readers. While it does include almost every story featuring Hunter Rose, the original Grendel (with the notable exception of BATMAN/GRENDEL), several of those stories reference later GRENDEL story arcs that the new reader will not be familiar with (it's also a bit of a spoiler). Also, the quality of the stories included in GRENDEL: BLACK, WHITE & RED and GRENDEL: RED, WHITE & BLACK (both collected in their entirety here) is variable. In my opinion, it would have been better if the stories had been collected in the order that they were originally published. Not all of the stories featuring Hunter would have appeared in the first volume, but I think it would have made more sense. It's worth noting that this volume includes one GRENDEL tale that is appearing in a collection for the first time - the CBLDF Liberty Annual 2011 story that deals with the issue of bullying. This is the type of story that I feel would work better in a later volume (it's a side story), but it's nice to have it included.

Also, it should probably be mentioned for those who aren't aware that this book is smaller than standard comic size.

Really good so far.

This is such a great deal for how much comic you get. It's the beginning of the story so you're not going to be lost, and theres 600 or so pages so you arent going to chew through it in an hour. The art is incredible and the story is fast paced, intelligently written, and really interesting. The first issue(volume?) Hunter Rose is written in a prosaic style with the art panels only describing the important stuff that happens, so theres about 10 times as much story as in other comics, although the whole thing feels paced like a detailed recap of a comic you didn't read. The paper this is pretty nice, it doesnt feel like it's going to fall apart in your hands although it's not the thick, glossy pages you get with some of the facier graphic novels. This book has a lot of quality and substance for the price, don't miss out on it.

Grendel is a must read

Thirty years ago, a single man shook the world of comics: a solitary man donned in black with a thirst for blood and a way with words. Matt Wagner's Hunter Rose, the man behind the iconic Grendel mask, was a character no one was expecting, and that's something that has stood the test of time. Now, in 2012, the epic works of Grendel are being collected in four omnibus editions starting with Volume 1: Hunter Rose.
The story of Grendel and his legacy are somewhat a legend in the comic world now. But for those that are in the dark, let me help you in understanding the devil that is Grendel. Hunter Rose is a wealthy young man, barely reaching the age of 18 when the story begins. A visionary author whose appearances spark mayhem wherever he may go, Hunter holds a dark secret: he is the murder known as Grendel. A sadistic, violent masked murderer who kills for profit, or any other reason he sees fit.

This volume follows the exploits of the young man, his violent actions, and the soft spot he gains for a young orphan, Stacy. This young girl is the link to his heart, but also to his sworn enemy, the wolf like man, Argent. Matt Wagner's original Grendel was far beyond its time, as it introduces characters with so many layers, so many secrets, that it was really a rarity at the time it was published. This omnibus follows Grendel from his prime days to a fateful showdown that changes everything. Though very mature in nature, this should be recommended reading for anyone wanting to learn about the world of sequential art.

Matt Wagner, along with a host of artists, brings these bloody, emotional stories to life in ways that haven't really been seen too often in the printed page. For me, its Wagner's merging of graphic design elements and line artwork that creates something new and innovative. Artists today, like Marvel Comic's Jonathan Hickman, use the presence of graphic design and merge it with artwork to create a look and feel that is all their own: a style that they all owe a tip of the hat to Wagner for as he trail blazed the style back in the 80's.

Overall: I have followed the works of Wagner in regards to Grendel for some time now. Having purchased separate hardcovers throughout the years, this omnibus series is the perfect way for someone to experience the Grendel saga in chronological order. I can't recommend this volume enough, as this 600-page monster of a book should be on every comic book fans bookshelf. Highly Recommended!

About the Author
Douglas Clark is an intellectual property lawyer who has practiced in China for more than 15 years. Until the end of 2010 he was a partner with the international law firm of Hogan Lovells and head of the firm's mainland China intellectual property practice as well as co-head of its worldwide patents group. Great in-depth coverage of patent prosecution, appeals and litigation in China. Also covers infringement and defenses such as clinical trials which I have not seen elsewhere. The method of presenting evidence at trial is great for any lawyer going into China for patent or defective product.

As Reconstruction collapsed, Hampton was elected governor in the contested election of 1876 in which both the governorship of South Carolina and the American presidency hung in the balance. While aspects of Hampton’s rise to power remain controversial, under his leadership stability returned to state government and rampant corruption was brought under control. Hampton then served in the U.S. Senate from 1879 to 1891, eventually losing his seat to a henchman of notorious South Carolina governor "Pitchfork" Ben Tillman, whose blatantly segregationist grassroots politics would supplant Hampton’s genteel paternalism.

One of the few Non-West Point Generals

Wade Hampton has never had the fame or attention of the Confederacy's other calvary leaders such ad J.E.B Stuart or Nathan Bedfore Forest. Unlike most of the other generals of the Civil War (on both sides) he did not attend West Point, he was trained in law but never practiced. When the war started, believing that the states who had voluntarily joined together could withdraw from the union if they wished, he formed the Hampton Legion. Wounded three times he was at many of the big battles of the war. These included: First Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, the Battle of Seven Pines, Antietam, the Chambersburg raid, and the Battle of Gettysburg. After the Battle of the Wilderness, he became commander of the cavalry corps, and took part in the Petersburg Campaign. He finished the war as a Lt. General.

This book completely covers his wartime campaigns, but then goes on to cover his extensive political career after the war. Governor of South Carolina and two terms in the U.S. Senate he was finally defeated by the political machine of Ben Tillman.

This book, by a fellow South Carolinian, is a welcome addition to Civil War literature. Well written, this is the definitive view of the General.

The Last Swordsman

Wade Hampton III has been in need of a comprehensive biography for a long time now. Reserved and deliberate in life, both as a cavalry commander and as a political leader, he tried to restrain his annoyance when temporarily outshone by more flamboyant peers; with the benefit of hindsight, however, we ought to pay more attention to WHIII and his substantial achievements.

The "untrained" officer whose pragmatic cavalry tactics proved more of an asset to Lee than the celebrated Stuart ever was; the reluctant secessionist who sacrificed family and fortune to the Confederate cause (or more accurately, to the cause of South Carolina); the conservative Democrat who reined in the bitter ferocity of his own party's extreme elements to become among the first Democrats in the nation to benefit from black voters - Hampton is a fascinating character and Cisco provides a worthy introduction to him.

Walter Cisco does not repeat the bits of folklore that crept into the last Hampton biography, a 1940's hagiography; instead he quotes extensively from primary sources and lets his subject's character emerge naturally. Nor does he shy from uncomfortable aspects, such as the probable abuse of Hampton's sisters by another prominent South Carolinian, or Hampton's bitter exchanges with Sherman over POW executions in the Carolinas Campaign of 1865. However, by the time you finish this work, you'll understand Wade Hampton III as a major and underappreciated figure in both the military and civil history of the South and of our nation.

You Don't Get Much Better Than This

This book is a biography of Wade Hampton III, a Confederate General during the American Civil War. Cisco gives a detailed look into Wade Hampton's life with focus on his service as a Confederate General during the Civil War and as a Conservative Statesmen in South Carolina after the war. It is Cisco's intent to demonstrate Wade Hampton's ability to transform himself from a slave owner to a respected Statesman who fought against the Radical Republican reconstruction efforts in the South. The author also gives the reader a glimpse into Nineteenth Century life and politics, as well as an understanding of how the United States was transformed from a Republic to an Empire. It is during this transformation that the author provides the reader with an in depth look at the life of a man who had played a significant role in shaping post Civil War South Carolina and helping the nation heal as a whole.

The author marshals his facts and his findings by using mostly primary sources; such as manuscripts, newspapers and periodicals. Some of the manuscripts Cisco uses include; Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence, New York: Peter Smith, 1938. "Democratic Convention," Harper's Magazine vol. XXXVII, no. 220 (September 1868): 567-571, Constitution of the Minutemen for the Defense of Southern Rights, Camden, S.C. Camden Weekly Journal Press, 1860. These are just a few examples of the many manuscripts the author used. Some of the newspapers and periodicals that Cisco used include; Chicago Tribune, 1880, New York Times, 1866, 1867, 1876, 1877, Charleston Daily Courier, 1860, 1861,1862, 1865, 1866,1867. These also are just a few of the many newspapers that Cisco used.

This book is organized in a way that is both chronological and topical. The chapters are broken down into topics which follow a timeline from Wade Hampton's birth in 1818 to his death in 1902. The main focus of this book is a chronicle of Hampton's life during the Civil War through Reconstruction and his post war political life. Cisco provides some maps and pictures that are helpful for the reader to put a face or an image to the topic the reader is engaged in at the time. The author maintains a style of organization which makes an even flow from one topic to the next.

The author maintains a detailed account of Wade Hampton's life. Wade Hampton III was a native of South Carolina born in the city Charleston on March 28, 1818. Hampton's family had a history of military service; his father, Wade Hampton II was a wealthy planter and slave owner and fought alongside Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. Hampton's grandfather; Wade Hampton senior fought on the side of Colonials in the American War for Independence. Hampton grew up in a wealthy family, receiving private education and in 1836 he graduated from South Carolina College. Early on, he devoted his life to the management of his great plantations in South Carolina and Mississippi. He was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly in 1852 and served as a Senator from 1858 to 1861. In 1858 he inherited a vast fortune including the plantations and several slaves.

When war broke out Hampton was not against secession, but he did not want to see the Union being broken up either. Hampton was loyal to his home state and when the Ordinance of Secession came, he resigned from the Senate and enlisted as a Private in the South Carolina Militia. The Governor of South Carolina; however insisted that Hampton accept a Colonel's commission even though he had no military experience at all. Hampton organized and partially financed the unit known as "Hampton's Legion", which he personally financed all of the weapons for. He quickly rose to the rank of Brigadier General and by 1863 was promoted to Major General. Cisco maintains that Hampton was an effective leader by saying," (J.E.B.) Stuart admired Hampton's abilities, even if he could not quite forgive the forty-four-year-old for not having been born in Virginia."(94) After the Peninsula Campaign in 1862,Wade Hampton served under Stuart through the remainder of the war.

After the War ended, Hampton was offered the nomination of Governor, but refused because he felt the Northerners would be suspicious of a former Confederate General. It was not until 1876 that Hampton returned to the role of a politician. Hampton fought against the Radical Republicans' policies in the South. He ran as the first southern gubernatorial candidate against Reconstruction. Hampton ran as a Democrat against Radical Republican incumbent governor Daniel Henry Chamberlain. Supporters of Hampton were called Red Shirts and were known to practice violence. After the election; both parties claimed victory and for over six months, there were two legislatures in the state. Eventually, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled Hampton as the winner of the election. After the election, Hampton became known as the "Savior of South Carolina."

Cisco's book offers a detailed look at a man who most certainly could be seen as a hero during the war and after the war at a time when it was not popular to be an Ex-Confederate. Cisco accomplishes his goal of presenting a well organized biography of a man who stood up to the Radicals and regained the Democratic mantra of being a party of the people. Wade Hampton was able to help return the Democratic Party back to its former glory and restore power back to the people. The author proves his thesis well by showing that Wade Hampton did indeed posses great leadership abilities. This book is an easy read and could be recommended to anyone who wishes to have a personal look into the life of a man who lived through pre-war America to post war Reconstruction and beyond.

Just a bunch of info with little to no cohesion

The book is full of complete and acccurate info, but its more like reading a fact list or a chart than reading an actual book. Also dont worry, there are various pages dedicated strictly to charts and graphs, probably a solid 10% of the book. The problem is they are compressing too much info into too small an area. I would rather the book be double the length and explain in more detail what is going on, than what it is now. The Hypothalamus produces chemical A. Chemical A reacts with compound B. Compound be clings to receptor C, activating and releasing messenger D into the blood to find target organ E. Next topic, the hypothalamus can also produce Chemical A1. Chemical A1 reacts with chemicals B1, B2, B3, and B4-alpha ... etc.

There is no cohesive goal, nothing holding these topics together, no overall flow of understanding what is happening and why. If the authors would like this book to only be used as a reference material, then its fine and accomplishes that job. But if this book is meant to teach a student as an introduction to endocrinology, it fails miserably and falls flat on its face. While taking my grad endocrinology course I was forced to use google and wikipedia on every topic because no one would explain how these processes work, they just tell me that they do. Its like when a child asks a parent "Why does it work this way?" and the parents response is "Because I said so." Thats about on par with how useful this book is.

If the field of endocrinology is just supposed to be rote memorization, then ok, I'm in the wrong field. But in order for me to learn and understand something, I need all the data, not just the facts.

Terrible textbook. This is the first time I bought ...

Terrible textbook. This is the first time I bought a second textbook that was not required to study for my exams. Hadley is discontinued, but the best source for learning Endocrinology. Kovacs text is wordy, poorly organized, and has almost no visuals. You can't teach science effectively without visuals.

Does not live up to the title

Based on the title of this book I was expecting to learn some tricks about hardcore iOS programming that would help me overcome difficult problems. However, most of the book is about fairly entry level iOS programming. A lot of the materials can be learned by doing a google search.

I was particularly disappointed with the chapters on iCloud sync - this chapter did not offer any insight into Core Data iCloud sync which is one of the touted advances in iOS6. Nor did it go over any of the pitfalls of implementing. It was obvious that the authors did not have any first hand experience with implementing iCloud sync for Core Data in any of their launched projects.

An advanced text

Many programming texts on iOS regurgitate the basics (that are all freely available form Apple or Stanford). This book is an obviously experienced guy relating specifics of how he does certain things. As an experienced programmer that is exactly what I wanted. It saved me time and therefore money. I bought the iOS 5 version of this book, found it good value, then bought the iOS 6 version. Although much is repeated I found it worth the money just for the updates. I'll buy the io7 version when he brings it out. Good value book.

This is a phenomenal book. Great coverage of drawing/QuartzCore. The sample code is great. I highly recommend to people who want some in-depth coverage of topics that are given coverage here.

About the Author
Tatsu Takeuchi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Virginia Tech. This book grew from the 'Highlights of Contemporary Physics' course he taught for many years. Primarily aimed at non-physics majors, it has been highly popular among physics students as well.

Very Intuitive

A highly accessible explanation! Dispenses with the cumbersome and obscuring math formalisms to present the essential elements of special relativity. No crazy matrix notations or cryptic equations. You will understand how the concept of the speed of light being the same for all observes in combination with the Lorentz transformation (which you will derive step by step with illustrated figures) results in surprising conclusions about the fundamental nature of space and time. It worked great for me as an interested layperson, but I think physics students seeking an introductory conceptual approach would also benefit. I do hope a book covering general relativity is also published following this very engaging format.

good but flawed

When I have a student who wants to learn a little relativity from a commercially published book, I usually suggest one of two books: Taylor and Wheeler's Spacetime Physics (for the mathematically adept) or Takeuchi (for others).

Here are my opinions on the pluses and minuses of Takeuchi:

Pro:

The physics is not obscured by equations that will be impenetrable to gen ed students.

The presentation is for the most part modern and geometical. This is a welcome antidote to outdated presentations that read as though they'd been written in 1935.

The problems seem good on casual inspection.

Con:

The presentation of the distinction between SR and GR is out of date. Takeuchi presents this using Einstein's original formulation in terms of inertial versus noninertial frames of reference, whereas modern physicists think of it as a distinction between flat spacetime and curved spacetime.

p. 92 - "This conservation of spacetime area maintains the symmetry between the tree- and car-frames, since each is moving at the exact same speed when observed from the other frame, and ensures that the correspondence between the points on the two diagrams is one-to-one." This is totally wrong. A one-to-one function from a plane to a plane need not conserve area. There are valid elementary arguments for conservation of area in the x-t plane, but this is not such an argument.

The second half of the book is not as lucid as the first. Takeuchi develops the "mass-momentum vector" in Newtonian mechanics; this seems like an awkward way to approach the topic, and is more abstract than pictures of world-lines. His target audience has never been exposed to 3-vectors. When he discusses the energy-momentum vector in SR, he drifts toward a higher level of math.

The other book to consider for this audience would be Mermin's It's About Time, which strikes me as more rigorous and less inviting.

Great fun with relativity

A wonderful book for beginners. Very few equations, many nice diagrams, extremely clear and careful language. But I would presume that even people familiar with special relativity will like it very much.
I hope that Takeuchi-san's intentions to write a book about general relativity will materialize.

About the Author

This book chose me to read it and became a savior. Never a adamant reader how ever finished this book in a few days. As it turned out this book brought light to my shadows of darkness and showed me that I am not alone but rather part of all that is. Teaching me how to stalk myself was like finally getting a major obstacle out of the way. Still if one has not attained an understanding of certain fundamental & spiritual concepts and incorporated them into a quest for at least a basic quest for knowledge, the book can only serve as entertainment.

A veritable 'Bible' for Self-Knowledge

I didn't especially care for Castaneda himself, when I met him, and I realize that he may have completely fabricated don Juan and his teachings, but I have recently finished reading "The Power of Silence" for my TENTH time in 35 years, and still find it awesomely powerful and on-point! In fact, each time I read this book, I keep finding ideas and methods that I either hadn't noticed before or had forgotten about. I consider this book a must-read for any serious transformational seeker who wishes to attain self-mastery and illumination.

Key explanations to advanced practicers

By far one of the best Castaneda`s books revealing very profound and important explanations. Useful only if the one who reads it has certain achievements in "stopping the world", "seeing", etc. Otherwise save it for later - don`t think upon it,won`t help you. Just read it and wait till you get positive results in your own practice. The book is very clear to understand with one`s mind but as always that doesn`t help at all - the problem in achieving practical results remains. If you are looking just for another interesting book - well, I guess you`ve found it. But if you are serious about it I hope my comments might be of some use to you.
