The daughter of millionaire racing driver, Woolf Barnato, and granddaughter of Barney Barnato who cofounded the De Beers mining company, by 1936 Diana had had enough of her affluent, chaperoned existence and sought excitement in flying, soloing at Brooklands after only six hours' training. She has followed her own instincts ever since.
Joining the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941 to help ferry aircraft to squadrons and bases throughout the country, she flew scores of different aircraft - fighters, bombers, and trainers - in all kinds of conditions and without radio it has to be remembered.
She lost many friends, a fiancé and a husband before 1945 but continued to fly. In 1962 she was awarded the Jean Lennox Bird Trophy for notable achievement in aviation and then - her greatest moment - in 1963 flew a Lightning through the sound barrier becoming 'the fastest woman in the world'. She was awarded the MBE in 1965.
Her remarkable memoirs, lauded when first published in hardback, are now available in paperback. Brimming with adventure, anecdotes and famous names, the book makes compelling reading. It is the story of a very special woman who, now in her eighties, continues to live life to the full from her home in Surrey.

A look into the interesting life of an extraordinary person
By Flying Photographer
She must have been an extraordinary person, and that shines through her book from page one onwards. Being a daughter of a millionaire-racing car driver-Bentley director, her life was very far away from the ordinary people, and as such particularly in the first part of the book (dealing with her early life until she begins flying for ATA in 1941) she comes over as somewhat arrogant and snobby. In our current politically correct world we are simply not used any more to look at people differently because of their origin or their honors bestowed by the King/Queen (or at least shouldn't!).
Nevertheless, her work with the ATA as a ferry pilot in the UK during WWII is simply amazing and shows a usually neglected contribution of women to the war effort. It is sheer incredible to read how they delivered hundreds of different aircraft all around the UK (and later continental Europe) all year round in almost any weather flying VFR without radios! And it is a testament to the training and their pilots that the ATA organization suffered such a relatively small percentage of accidents (compared to the war standard).
Indeed, Diana's description of her work as a ferry pilot is without a doubt the heart of the book, in that it gives us a good idea about the organization and the daily job these pilots did during WWII. Unfortunately, while some parts of the book are very thoroughly described (she must have kept a very detailed log of all her flights), others are rushed without getting into any details at all (she hardly mentions her work with the Red Cross, but she was in France and drove ambulances during the Blitz in London!). She clearly chose what to say and what not, particularly regarding her personal life (that must have been very hard, considering all that happened to her between 1941 and 1945) and it is unfortunate for the reader that a more complete look into her life is denied. She passed away in 2008 (her guardian angel must finally have given up - you will understand after reading the book!) thus we may never be able to fill the blanks in her very interesting life story.
This is definitely a book for all aviation fans, particularly for the ones who would like to know more about ATA and female pilots during WWII. Even without that part, Diana's life was extraordinary, as she was - recommended.

Really good once you get past the earlier years
By J. M. Amor
I really enjoyed this book once I got past Diana's earlier years. Which unfortuately make her sound pompous and arrogant, snobby and pretentious and actually rather bratty and in places nasty.
This is unfortunate because if you can get past this bit and onto where she started flying. It is great. It is almost like it is written by a different person. And the accounts of her life learning to fly and in the ATA are fascinating. Real first hand experiences as an ATA pilot flying all the different aircraft. And what is was like for the women ferry pilots.
I recommend this book if you can get past the first part of it.

If you love planes, the British history of WWII
By Lynn M. Holley
When you think you can't go on, read this delightful, inspiring book. I had the honor to meet Diana a number of times and interview her. She was an extraordinary woman, as were the women who were part of the ferry pilots of that time . If you love planes, the British history of WWII, but mostly planes, read this book!
