Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power Of Intimate Relationships, by Marianne Williamson

Three of Marianne Williamson's previous bestsellers -- A Return to Love, A Woman's Worth, and Illuminata -- explored the issue of relationships. Now, in this deeply personal collection of essays, prayers, and self-reflection, she turns to romantic love.

In Illuminata, Williamson wrote that "we experience God to the extent to which we love, forgive, and focus on the good in others and ourselves." Now, in Enchanted Love, she writes that "enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious." High romance, she says, "is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what is, at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us."

Chapter One: The Enchanted Sea

I love the sea, the blue and the green and the wet and the cool. If I have to choose between the sea or you, I take you, but with sadness.

My favorite thing is to swim with you, to put the crown on my head and spray water in your face, to see you when you laugh like that, and pretend that I'm a little girl. I love to see that look on your face when you register that I'm not....I know, I know, they always ask that, "Who are you, exactly?"

I just laugh and then I dive down deep, to find more pearls on the ocean floor. I will bring them back to you, my love. I will always bring them back to you....

I used to have a thing about mermaids.

I felt I often met men who were lost at sea. I would meet them and lift them up, swim them home, and help them get their land legs back. But then I would have to go back into the ocean because I had only a fishtail. I envied the women with land legs, who got to greet these men upon their return and stay with them back on shore. I pitied myself all the lonely nights I spent swimming alone in a tempestuous sea, the stars above my only companions between rendezvous with drowning sailors.

When she was a very young child, I read The Little Mermaid to my daughter many times, and it was way too close to home. The mermaid Ariel got a different ending than I always did. At the end of the story she got to stay with Prince Eric in his world, and she didn't have to be a mermaid anymore. Something in me wanted that for myself. I would tell my Erics that I was going to do it their way, but then I found things so boring in their world. Yes, I wanted to be one of those land girls, but on another level I clearly didn't. I found I couldn't live without swimming, no matter how much I said otherwise. My tempestuous sea was a magical sea. And I didn't just enjoy the stars shining down on the ocean in the middle of the night; I finally realized I need them. If I had to choose between Eric and the sea, I was clearly more drawn to the sea. I saw that I wasn't made for Eric's world, and what I really wanted was a man who could swim without my help.

What I wanted was not a knight on a white horse. What I wanted was a knight on a dolphin, and ultimately that is what I found. For I learned some things about the Erics of the world. They are bored here, too. They want enchanted swims in the middle of the night, and are as open to the mermaid who swims them out to sea as to a mermaid who swims them back to land.

Forget The Little Mermaid. Splash is a better movie.

At the end of that one, the mermaid says to her love, "You know, I come from a much better place than this. There are just as many lights in my world and there is just as much excitement. There's as much going on down there as up here. In fact, in truth, it's a more civilized environment."

She had actually come, then, not just to be with him but to retrieve him. He flashed back to the moment when he'd met her. They had been children then, and their initial point of contact had not been earth, but sea. That was the point of their true and original connection, and its magic couldn't be exported to a sullied, weary, worldly environment. Enchantment is nontransferable. And so they both went back to sea. The mystic, and mystical lovers, learn this basic rule: Go where you're wanted. Go where you belong.

Mystical love, like mystical anything, exists in a different realm of consciousness than the one that dominates our daily lives. Emotional enchantment is conjured up, brought forth, and summoned from the underworld. It is not neurosis but mystical talent to know that and to know how to do it. In every woman, there is a latent priestess with the ability to invoke that realm. Mermaids are a kind of sexual muse, singing of a higher, more subtle, more magical dimension of life and love. In the enchanted romantic sea, we all have the power to heal and be healed. Our love, in that place, is a temple garden. Sex, in that place, is the door to the temple, and in that temple lies the power of God.

That sacred dimension of romance is what lovers long for now: the magical space of an enchanted intimacy. Many of us have been practicing its ways, unbeknownst to ourselves, for years. Some women have been practicing magic while others were doing housework. Some men have been practicing magic while others were practicing the worldly routines that rob their time and sap their life force. Some of us surrendered to the mystical waters that surround our earthly experience, and the surrender has at last turned out to be a blessing.

There was a time when the sea creatures landed on earth; now the creatures of the earth are heading back to sea. The enchanted lover -- a candidate for mastery of both earth and sea -- is rising up today in a creative swell. The reinvention of romantic love is our newest frontier, toward which our personal yearning is driving us in droves. There is another world beyond this one, which the mystically uninitiated simply cannot see. Their only response, were they to see a mermaid, would be to run some tests. Fishtails seem weird to them, but on the other hand, they don't see wings either.

In truth, they do not see at all. That is why they call love blind, for it is they who cannot see. There are some things that cannot be seen with earthly eyes.

Enchanted love is one of them....

If you will hold my hand, then I will hold my breath and cast my fate in the direction of my heart. I will put on hold my lesser dreams and reach for what is truly mine.

Say you will, and I will buy my ticket for this ride. It will not be cheap, nor always smooth. But I don't care. I don't care. I have finally come to that....

Our deepest human need is not material at all: Our deepest need is to be seen. We need adventure. We need meaning. We need identity. We need love. Someone who has seen us through loving eyes has awakened us from the ranks of the formerly dead. Most people bear the terminal stress of walking the world unseen, a mere number or cog in a lifeless machine. Mystical romance is a space of resurrection and repair. It does more than help us survive a soulless world; it helps us to transform it.

The problem with most intimate relationships is that they are not romantic. They do not involve a deeper knowing, and thus there is diminished possibility of sacred, transformative sharing. To be truly seen, in all our innocence and glory, is to be truly healed. What we salute in one another, we call forth in one another.

So many people say that they are looking for love, yet they are actually committed to never finding it. Many people would really rather not know of the scars and triumphs of the person who lies in their arms. Many people who say they are looking for love are merely looking for superficial comfort. Real love entails readiness to die to who we were, in order to be born again prepared for love, truly worthy of the romantic heights. Real love is comforting, to be sure, but not always at first. In becoming romantic artists, we must pierce the armor that hides our hearts, and that piercing is not comfortable. It is horrible and painful. It can take years of tears to melt the hardness that develops in this world, covering our tender, gentler, inner selves. Tears for every devastating loss. Tears for every humiliating failure. Tears for every repeated mistake. Those who allow those tears, even honor those tears, are not failures at love but rather its true initiates. First the pain, and then the power. First the heart breaks and then it soars.

Love will push every button, try every faith, challenge every strength, trigger every weakness, mock every value, and then leave you there to die. But once you begin to turn the corner, to leave love's bush league and enter the pros, there is no worldly activity that can match the joy of flying like an eagle through the skies of a lover's heart.

Do you remember when we were kids, reading about evolution? We were shown apes on the left side of a page, and a standing human being on the far right. That was how evolution was presented to us: as the rise of our species from ape to man.

But perhaps we should reconsider that picture. I think the standing human being belongs in the center of the page. Now, our arms are hanging down at our side, but what should happen next is that our arms move up slightly, in a position reminiscent of Jesus. It is a position that says simultaneously, "I am undefended" and "Come unto me." Can you imagine a picture of Jesus with his arms folded in front of him, striking a pose that suggests the attitude, "Don't even think about coming close to me"?

Our human arms will begin to lift, in a kind of Hallelujah posture, continuing to rise as a space on the back between the shoulder blades pops and our wings begin to sprout. At the far right of the page there will be a picture of an angel. For that is where we're headed now, as our evolutionary potential calls us to spring forward and become who we really are.

How will we get there? Quite simply, with each other. The highest purpose of intimacy is to call forth the beloved's soul.

Heaven is entered two-by-two. Enchanted intimacy is a temple of the Holy Spirit, where we are most quickly and most likely to be transformed by grace. We cannot remain who we used to be, once love has made it over our walls and begun to change our hearts.

The twentieth century is drawing to a close. We are exiting spiritual Dark Ages in which materialistic form and function were viewed as the primary reality of almost everything. Love hardly survived these times, though survive it did, in a fierce and miraculous way, often ravaged and torn by the mockery and denial of a loveless world. Magic was exiled to the margins of the mind, while true romance was diminished to the purview of fairy tales, and fairy tales, of course, were supposedly just for children. We applauded Romeo and Juliet, yet secretly supported the idiocy of their parents.

True romance had to go underground, as physical, then economic needs, took center stage. Women needed men to make their physical environment safe, to help protect the children and themselves. Nature needed both men and women to create more children, till the soil, and so on. But now the species has entered the next phase of our journey, the menopause of our existence, where our creativity will turn less physical and more spiritual. The planet needs more wisdom now, more than it needs more children. Men and women need each other, at least as much as we ever did, but for a deeper experience than mere procreation or protection. We need to partner in consciousness now, to conceive the miraculous things of spirit. Our most potent needs are psychological and emotional, our most potent language is poetry and myth, and our most potent love is forgiveness and compassion.

Our children, to survive, need this transformation in our experience of love. In order to protect them in ages past, we needed to be able to subdue our physical environment. Now, in order to protect the children, we must learn to pacify that same environment, to transform it from fear to love. Our relationships, at their highest, are conduits for a quantum leap forward. We need to be reborn as a human family now, for men and women to be made new, to be washed clean of the past that the world might start again. A soulful love is the psychic womb for new life, where our kisses have the power to transform us all.

It was messy when we were born into the body, and it is messy being reborn in spirit.

Growth is a detox process, as our weakest, darkest places are sucked up to the surface in order to be released. Often, upon seeing the weaknesses in each other, we have the tendency to go "Yuck!" and walk away on some level. But often it is not a change in partners but rather a change in perception that delivers us to the love we seek. When we shift our view of the purpose of intimacy -- from serving our own needs as we define them to serving a larger process of healing -- then an entirely new opportunity presents itself. Our wounds have been brought forward, not to block the experience of love, but to serve it. It is in the forgiveness of our weaknesses that we are healed of them, and the tenderness of a forgiven heart is a tenderness that will ultimately heal the world.

You and I both know that we have shadow sides. We have edges, my darling, and resistances to love. If we're unevolved about this, then we will hurt each other, we will only cause pain. These aspects of ourselves could ruin this relationship. Let's consider this, before we embark.

In fact, we were brought together for healing purposes. There will be something in your personality which is bound to trigger the unhealed parts of me, and I will trigger yours.

But we can see this relationship differently. Through the grace of God, it can become a healing environment rather than an emotional torture chamber. Then I think I can work on those parts of myself, and you can work on those parts of you. We can even grow beyond these things. I just need you to know that I'm trying. Please share with me, but try not to attack or judge me for these wounds I carry. And I will try my best to do the same for you. Then holiness will be served here, and the relationship can deepen.

Forgive me, if you can, and I vow to try to forgive you.

Can the purpose of a relationship be to trigger our wounds? In a way, yes, because that is how healing happens; darkness must be exposed before it can be transformed. The purpose of an intimate relationship is not that it be a place where we can hide from our weaknesses, but rather where we can safely let them go. It takes strength of character to truly delve into the mystery of an intimate relationship, because it takes the strength to endure a kind of psychic surgery, an emotional and psychological and even spiritual initiation into the higher Self. Only then can we know an enchantment that lasts.

We unconsciously seek the relationships that challenge us to deliver on our most soulful selves, as well as tempt us to fall into our most neurotic patterns. We must attend to the wound in order to heal it. That is the romantic Grail. It is what makes an intimate relationship so exciting, but also so difficult. Enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious. High romance is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what is, at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into who two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us.

There is more to say, though we have not the language. There is more to see, though we have not the eyes. There is more to love, though we have not the heart....

As yet, my love. As yet. For I believe in the power of love, and the magnetic draw of planets to their orbits. And you are drawn to encircle me as I am drawn to encircle you. Encircle each other we will forever, for our orbits are bound to one another's pull. The central sun has determined that, and its light, however dim or however bright, however central to our vision or merely peripheral and at times ignored, shall always call us back to our hearts. And back at home, in the haven of love, we will always find each other. I will be there, if only for a moment, and I will say to you, each and every time, "I remember, my darling. This is home to me."

"Do you think planets call each other 'Darling'?" you asked with a smile.

"On some level," I said, "I think they do."

And that is where we all begin: a prince and princess longing for each other, wandering through foreign lands in search of one we lost. It is not an external "fix" we seek, but an internal blessing, and our souls will bend toward the possibility of union as surely as a flower bends toward sunlight. Wicked fairies and evil queens, monsters and dragons, and dangerous spells will always threaten our approach to heaven. Yet we are drawn to our destiny as if to a magnet, and while monsters can delay us, they have no power to change our destination. The map to our deliverance is held in trust and guarded by angels. We will encounter the darkness of a lonely existence, but find each other again in the light of an intense and compassionate understanding. We find in that place an unending kiss.

Each of us carries, etched on our hearts, instructions that read, "Come home. Come home." And the beloved arrives to take us there. Like the prince who comes to awaken Sleeping Beauty, he is an earthly prince who has received a higher Crown. With his Sword of Truth -- his honesty and courage -- and his Shield of Virtue -- his integrity intact -- he cuts through the brambles that surround the castle, and he frees us from the blackness of our too, too long night. Awakened, we embrace him, and together we enter enchanted realms. The kingdom of the heart is thus brought back to life, and life for everyone begins again.

Once upon a time, in a dimension of consciousness very far away, a mystical adventure began. Now, many ages later, we are beginning to awaken from our deep, deep sleep of separation and guilt. There is a sound of footsteps as the loved one approaches. He has made it to our side, and we are about to awaken from the deadness of our former selves. The beloved comes with an elixir of rebirth, in both hands, in every kiss, and our souls are reunited in God. We are free of our nightmares. We are forgiven and released. We are totally in love. We are so happy we are home.

Spirituality & Love
By Roxana
I am now reading this book for the second time and I love it just as much now as I did the first go around. Marianne Williamson really understands how spiritual contact with a Higher Power influences and shapes the kinds of love we initiate and sustain in our lives. I particularly like the way she describes the relationship dynamics between men and women in the midst of intimate relationships and just how much spiritual work needs to be done. The prayers that she intersperses through the book are beautiful and moving.

As for those who try and insult her work just because she hasn't been married to 'Joe Schmoe' for 25 years with a whole troop of kids and grandkids...might I remind those that true love does not always take the traditional conventional route. Some of the greatest loves of my life have been men I never married and never would, the real point is that they were all still worthwhile and valid experiences that contributed to my growth and knowledge as a person. Also just because someone manages to stay married for 25 years in no way means that relationship is healthy, happy or worth emulating.

With that being said this book has to be one of her more underrated works yet in my opinion I found it to be the most poignant and moving. It has definitely deepened my emotional and spiritual capacity to feel and accept love into my life.

Marianne Williamson, lecturer on metaphysics and spirituality, turns her attention to romantic love in Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power or Intimate Relationships. The book is in thirteen chapters with titles such as "The Enchanted Sea" and "Of Space Captains and Angels." It also contains poems and prayers by the author.
One of Ms. Wiliamson's earlier books, A Return to Love, explained some of the principles of A Course in Miracles as they relate to issues in daily life. A Return to Love was a very clear, well written book, that I have enjoyed reading at least five times over the past few years. Unfortunately I found Enchanted Love something of a disappointment. It lacks the organization around clear topics that one finds in A Return to Love. Enchanted Love contains some very good paragraphs, but the book often seems like a not very interesting assortment of preachy pronouncements. Although some of the author's statements are explained with examples, others are simply uttered, and one may well wonder "Is that really true?" or even "What does that mean?"
We are told, for example: "I once heard Pat Allen say that men produce into women's appetites. Men are by nature producers, and one of the things they produce into is female desire. From our sexual lives to our emotional lives, that is an archetypal pattern of great beauty and significance." I do not have the vaguest idea who Pat Allen is. I have never before heard the verb "produce" followed by the preposition "into." I cannot imagine what "produce into" means, but "producing into" certainly does not sound like a pattern of beauty to me. Perhap there are circles of people who know of Pat Allen and who speak of "producing into appetites." Who knows? I don't. One wonders what sort of editorial process the book went through.
Ms. Williamson writes, "Marrieds and singles are constantly sending telepathic communications to each other. There is a constant conversation everyone knows is there, but which few dare to verbalize." I was unaware of such constant telepathic communication. Is it really taking place?
Although some of the author's poems and prayers may serve as worthwhile meditations, some are quite banal. One poem, for example, contains the line "Your issues are more interesting now." Is that poetry, or merely the sort of psychobabble one may routinely hear at twelve-step meetings?
Fans of Ms. Williamson may find that the book contains some interesting material and food for thought. For those unacquainted with Ms. Williamson, I would recommend A Return to Love, but not Enchanted Love.

Stick with It...Seriously
By Carole Ward
Admittedly, this particular tome was a bit of a struggle to stick with at first. After three years of self-imposed exile from relationships, I felt ready to attract someone suitable and willing to build a holy relationship with me...a concept Marianne introduced in A Return to Love.

Now, Marianne's work usually has me at hello, but she took an odd angle with Enchanted Love that had me cocking my head a bit. I remember thinking, "Ah...she must have been in love when she wrote this..." While Marianne is usually so forthright in her work, this one has that sticky-sweet flavor that none of her other offerings sport. I'd just completed The Law of Divine Compensation, quickly followed by A Return to Love, and desired a continuation of the same.

However, once I got over my insistence that she write the dang book my way - which, you know, is so very effective - I began to appreciate what Marianne envisioned as she wrote. As I let go of my resistance, I warmed to this softer version of her voice, and began to appreciate the profound wisdom of her words.

As such, the inner shift that had begun as I read Return to Love accelerated within my consciousness and became more polished. I began to see the soul of the man who I'd just met, and realized that the spiritual heart beating within his chest was also my own. I realized that, after decades of only seeing the "wrong" types of men cross my radar, while simultaneously refusing to allow God to express itself through me in the scope of my relationships, I had indeed let go and healed. I had emotionally and spiritually grown up. I could finally welcome God into my relationships...both with others and with myself.

God speaks with us in many forms, and Marianne is quintessentially the best at pulling us out of ourselves and showing us the Truth of who we are. Our only task is that we open and receive. I am so grateful that I have.

Cocktails done right!
By Liam T. Lawrence
If you appreciate sipping a well made cocktail - you should appreciate this fantastic collection of recipes, stories, and home bar tending advice. Easily replicated recipes that produce amazing results are reason enough to buy this book, but I also enjoyed the history lessons detailing the demise (and subsequent revival) of the classic cocktail (I am glad to be past the days of frozen mixers and yellow tequila!). Is it wrong that I am craving an old fashioned at this hour...?

Great photography by the author himself. Delicious cocktails, clearly the result of exhaustive, but fun research. Well written recipes for simple classics to sophisticated new techniques. Great glossary and list of bar tool must haves. A wonderful gift for many people on your holiday list! Excuse me now, it's Friday and I have to go make a "Carmen's Veranda"!

The Scarlet Macaw, by S.P. Hozy

A literary mystery where the people and the settings in the exotic East are paramount.

Two entwined mysteries unfold in two time periods in Singapore – one in the present and the other in the 1920s. Artist Maris Cousins has lived in Singapore for four years, but the sudden death of her mentor, gallery owner Peter Stone, causes her to stop painting and leave Singapore to reconnect with her family in Canada. There she becomes immersed in the fictional stories of love and betrayal from Singapore’s past – in first editions left to her by Stone – written by a famous early-20th-century author, E. Sutcliffe Moresby.

Drawn back to Singapore and the gallery, she searches for answers to the mystery of three people – a writer, his young wife, and their baby – who seem to be linked to Stone. But along the way, Maris becomes caught up in circumstances involving smuggling and possibly murder.

From Booklist
Artist Maris Cousins loses her ability to paint, even to see colors as she had previously, after witnessing the death by poisoning of her friend and mentor, Peter Stone, owner of a prestigious Singapore gallery. Puzzled by Peter’s bequest to her of an old trunk containing letters, paintings, and first editions of books by a popular early twentieth-century English author, she dips into the short stories, which detail the travails of Englishmen and -women who made their way to Singapore or Malaya decades earlier, only to contend with monsoon rains, unrelenting heat, and unbearable loss. As Maris herself rebounds, her creativity reignited at the sight of a scarlet macaw after she falls in love with a suspiciously secretive visiting businessman, she finds a clue to the underlying cause of Peter’s murder. Fiction echoes reality continually throughout this novel, which seems less a mystery—with a wrap that’s a bit abrupt—than a family saga, notable particularly for its vivid sense of place in modern Singapore. --Michele Leber

Review
Notable particularly for its vivid sense of place in modern Singapore. (Booklist)

Hozy’s luscious prose makes this literary stand-alone a memorable read. Her talent for juggling multiple narrators (alternating between the present and 1920s Singapore) and interspersing with clue-laden short stories is impressive. Leisurely paced, it has tremendous crossover potential for non-mystery readers who favor classic tales such as those of W. Somerset Maugham. (Library Journal)

Hozy's third mystery is a magnificent combination of two stories a century apart. ...Hozy skillfully transports readers between the two centuries and builds suspense with questions of who can be trusted. (Publishers Weekly)

What elevates The Scarlet Macaw from most other mysteries is its fervent grasp of the power of stories, and how important they are in providing a sense of self. (National Post)

About the Author
S.P. Hozy is the author of four novels set in Asia. A world traveller for most of her life, she is retired from the film industry, where she won numerous awards as a sound editor and currently works as a book editor, dividing her time between Malaysia and Toronto.

Wheels Within Wheels, Gyres Within Gyres
By Lou Allin
In contemporary Singapore, successful artist Maris is enjoying a quiet dinner at home with her boyfriend Peter, an art and antiques dealer. Suddenly Peter appears to have suffered a stroke.
Frantic, she watches his inert body for ten minutes of eternity: "It reminded her of the way penguins buried their heads in their chests to sleep." Paramedics do their impotent best; then she heads to the hospital, wondering where his reading glasses went and mindlessly worrying about the fish they never got to eat. Facing the fact that he is dead, Maris notifies his half-sister Dinah, who runs his upscale gallery. They must talk to Angela, his ex-wife in Germany and a mainstay of his business in Europe.
Angela is far from likable, but is she involved with the death since she will inherit? Maris considers her ex-rival: "She's built like a boning knife: all precision, balance, and sharpness....Nothing drooped, nothing sagged. Give it another five years and she'd be getting the eye job and the Botox injections."
Peter has been poisoned by a dose of choral hydrate in his bottle of Campari . Easy enough, especially if he drank from it every night. But why and by whom? The police are satisfied that Maris has nothing to gain. Her art sales are blossoming at Peter's gallery. Totally drained and unable to work, she heads home to her eccentric family in British Columbia. She grew up with flower children parents: Spirit meets Freedom Man. Hozy portrays hippie history with a steely eye for the consequences of decisions.
Then the gyre takes a spin, giving the plot an unexpected turn. In an old leather trunk Peter designated for Maris are curious paintings and sketches as well as letters from 1923 involving Annabelle in England, her fiancée in Malaysia, Francis, and his wealthy friend Edward (Sutty), who wants the lovers to reunite even at his own cost. Yet, love aside, how can the feckless Francis make a living from his writing, let alone live the ex-patriot life? Even those with "The Company" had best marry late, after prospects improve, and are warned against bringing English roses to the tropical swelter of the rainforest.
As the writing style shifts ninety years without missing a beat, Francis writes to "dearest Annabelle": "To say that I miss you is to put into cheap, inadequate words a longing that surpasses anything I have ever felt. I am here with Sutty and we have settled into the Raffles Hotel....Sutty says that if I don't stop moping around like a lovesick old elephant he's going to turn me into a character in one of his books and have me die a horrible death." Later, these words will haunt the reader, at this early stage happily time-travelling into Somerset Maugham's Miss Thompson.
But yet another dimension waits in the next chapters with short stories from the same period. Is Sutty chronicling the life of his friends? "It's not often that I'm invited to attend a wedding on my travels," the author within the author says, and the reader relaxes with a G and T. Later stories involve the same people with different endings. Has life turned into fiction or vice versa? There are surfaces under surfaces, time warps and modulations few writers can juggle. Sutty seemed so real that I looked him up on Google.
Hozy, who lives in Thailand herself, has absorbed the local colour, climate, and history. Details like James Brooke, an English soldier who became the Rajah of Sarawak, are compelling. Brooke was real, which keeps the reader guessing about the rest.
The reader hovers delightedly off balance, eager for the next installment of the old story, but waiting for the advancement of the new. When will they blend? Who killed Peter? What happened to Annabelle and her son? Did they return to England or did they perish roaming the netherworld of life on Singapore backstreets, where a poor woman has only one career, one which should not be whispered in good company?
Hozy has made herself the Literary Queen of Expats in this exotic part of the world. Her other locales involve Shanghai, Thailand, and India.

clever style and tangible characters
By third R blind
S.P. Hozy once again lays out a rich tapestry of characters and events with her distinctive blend of history and fiction. The dialogues are particularly engaging--playful, heartbreaking, realistic, a joy to read. A unique and mesmerizing weaving of past and present allows the reader to follow several storylines which all share common ground. Hozy calls forth her early 20th century author with complete authenticity, and deftly juggles the juxtaposition of two time periods. A riveting and well-paced book, Hozy takes us on another amazing journey and makes us believe it all.

Management of Treatment-Resistant Major Psychiatric DisordersFrom Oxford University Press

Although there are a variety of textbooks and manuals of psychiatric disorders, few have focused on the management of treatment-resistant patients. Those that exist have largely focused on treatment-resistant depression and even these are now largely outdated. Because psychiatrists and other mental health care professionals increasingly manage patients who fail treatment from family practitioners and other non-psychiatric specialists, a single practical volume summarizing the evidence-based medicine as well as the art of managing treatment-resistant patients is a much needed volume for practitioners, psychiatry residents and other mental health workers. Most importantly, both psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions will be included, a shortcoming of many previous volumes.

"Management of Treatment Resistant Major Psychiatric Disorders" contains chapters authored by leaders in the field on the management of the major treatment resistant psychiatric disorders.

Review

"Poor response, non-response and lost response to treatment in major psychiatric disorders are the rule, not the exception. The challenge of treatment resistance is foundational to the practice of clinical psychiatry. Charlie Nemeroff has gifted the field with a masterful and authoritative volume that goes well beyond algorithms and recipes for next step treatment and provides evidence-based disquisition of the heterogeneous contributors to treatment resistance, and thus drives thoughtful differential diagnosis and treatment planning. This is an essential volume for modern psychiatric practice and clinical research." -- Jerrold F. Rosenbaum, MD, Chief of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Stanley Cobb Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

"This book has something for everyone, from the student to the expert. A critical and ubiquitous aspect of psychiatric practice - treatment resistance - is comprehensively addressed in a scholarly yet practical fashion. Descriptions of the phenomenology and neurobiology of each of the many disorders considered are lucid, up to date, and state of the art. This is a terrific text." -- David R. Rubinow, MD, Assad Meymandi Professor and Chair of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine

"Unfortunately, many patients with psychiatric disorders do not respond to initial therapy. Refractory or treatment resistance is a major problem for many patients and all treaters. This superb book consists of 15 chapters--authored by leaders in the field-- on the issue of resistance in the major psychiatric disorders. The chapters provide sophisticated but readable overviews of the problems encountered in treating patients with all of the major disorders and in the best evidence for overcoming them. It is unique because it emphasizes resistance across all classes of psychiatric syndromes and it thoughtfully includes both somatic and psychosocial approaches. This is a must have volume for all mental health practitioners. " -- Alan F. Schatzberg, MD, Kenneth T. Norris, Jr. Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science, Stanford University School of Medicine

"...this book is outstanding because it covers all the major psychiatric conditions. Further,
each chapter manages to efficiently condense a large amount of information into a manageable presentation that is practical for readers. I appreciate how the book illustrates various treatment options, along with detailed pharmacological treatments." -- Aaron Plattner, MD, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Doody's

"It provides quite extensive, clear and updated information on the management of various treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, highlighting future treatment options currently under research. I am sure psychiatrists will find it practical and useful." -- Amit Jain, The Psychiatrist

"This book, containing a state-of-the-art review of how to manage treatment resistance in 15 different psychiatric disorders, is a timely gift to clinicians who have to manage patients with unremitting mental disorders. It is an excellent resource that belongs on the bookshelf of not only psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners but also other mental health professionals... Overall, I urge every reader to own this book and use it as a practical reference for the many treatment-resistant or refractory patients in clinical practice. It will save hundreds of hours of browsing PubMed to access all of the data between the covers of this timely volume!" --Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

"Given that most psychiatric disorders are chronic and relapsing, this book represents an unusually practical text that combines standard treatment protocols with less conventional but eminently usable treatment suggestions for recalcitrant symptoms. All practicing psychiatrics and more advanced trainees can benefit from having this book on their shelf." --American Journal of Psychiatry

Great Resource
By Terrence
As a psychiatrist, there are any number of textbooks on the basics of psychopharmacology. They generally are not very helpful for many of the patients I see, who have already exhausted most first line treatments. This textbook is extremely useful for the treatment-resistant patients that make up the challenging part of my practice. I especially liked the chapters on refractory insomnia, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.

For clinicians who have seen and been exposed to various complex and challenging cases, this book is an outstanding guide. Capone: The Man and the Era, by Laurence Bergreen

In this brilliant history of Prohibition and its most notorious gangster, acclaimed biographer Laurence Bergreen takes us to the gritty streets of Chicago where Al Capone forged his sinister empire.

Bergreen shows the seedy and glamorous sides of the age, the rise of Prohibition, the illicit liquor trade, the battlefield that was Chicago. Delving beyond the Capone mythology. Bergreen finds a paradox: a coldblooded killer, thief, pimp, and racketeer who was also a devoted son and father; a self-styled Robin Hood who rose to the top of organized crime. Capone is a masterful portrait of an extraordinary time and of the one man who reigned supreme over it all, Al Capone.

Biography of the legendary prohibition-era gangster.

From Library Journal
In the wake of Robert J. Schoenberg's Mr. Capone (LJ 8/92), called "the most detailed biography of Capone published to date" by LJ's reviewer, comes an even more detailed account based on extensive research and interviews. Bergreen, who has written biographies of James Agee and Irving Berlin, has "abandoned conventional assumptions of...right and wrong" in his sympathetic portrayal of the one-time Public Enemy Number One. He blames the hypocrisies of Prohibition and anti-Italian bias for creating Capone's undeserved reputation, and he is especially critical of Capone nemesis Eliot Ness. Bergreen labels the tax evasion trial that sent Capone to prison a "legalistic lynching" and tends to excuse Capone's more unsavory actions as the results of "latent neurosyphilis." However controversial, this book offers much of interest, including new information about Capone and his family. Larger crime collections will want both books.

From Booklist
People still respond to the mention of Chicago by saying, "Al Capone. Rat-a-tat-tat." But public enemy number one did not personally use the Thompson submachine gun to protect his bootlegging empire, says Bergreen, although his associates most certainly did. In fact, Bergreen sets out to dispel the hoodlum-killer aspect of Capone's career, instead focusing on the racketeer's insistence on being a businessman. For the most part, despite the Saint Valentine's Day massacre and numerous other gang killings, he succeeds. Bergreen starts out slowly, tending to blame much of Capone's later actions on a poor childhood, and concentrating on the future gangster's ostracism by fellow immigrant Irish and even Sicilians (Capone's family was Neapolitan). A side plot about a long-lost brother's becoming a Great Plains lawman is intriguing but doesn't really go anywhere, and another lawman, "untouchable" Eliot Ness, self-proclaimed Capone scourge, fares poorly; Ness is annoying to the Capone empire, but not much else. Most revealing of all are the gangster's declining years in Alcatraz, where Capone tried to teach himself to play the banjo! Bergreen's view of Capone the man is not particularly surprising otherwise, but the 1920s view of Prohibition-era Chicago is tremendously entertaining. Joe Collins

no scars on this face
By John W. Cotner
This book deserves better than it has gotten; I am surprised by the vehemence of some of the reviewers' reactions to it. It offers a broad, interesting, historical view of turn of the century New York, then Chicago, early 20th century politics, prohibition, the hero-worship of the Roaring 20's, the mafia, the FBI, syphillis, Alcatraz -- a whole Ragtime-like panorama. It is entertaining and instructive. Those who pan it appear to have a problem with the somewhat sympathetic portrayal of a morally objectionable person or quibble over arcane facts.
Having lived in Lansing, Michigan and spent time in the northwoods of Wisconsin, where Al Capone summered, I can say that the legend of Al Capone is still very much alive in those two locations; he rivals George Washington for having supposedly slept or shot up more places than anyone else. The author captures this aspect of Capone's life, as well as his charismatic, sympathetic Robin Hood-like persona which humanized him and endeared him to a portion of the masses.
I wa not bothered by the diversions of attention to Al Capone's brother, Two Gun Hart and his supposed nemisis, Eliot Ness, and found them interesting and germane to Capone's life story. I had not heard of the brother before but was aware that post-Capone, Ness ended up as a police official in Cleveland. Nor was I bothered by what some call an overly-sympathetic portrayal of Capone; he has aspects that frankly are sympathetic.
What strikes me as most interesting about the author's portrayal of Al Capone is that he shows how Capone -- certainly not stupid, and trained as a bookkeeper -- was the first man to apply systematic business and financial practices to the running of the mob, and increased its bottom line. He also was either more politically astute than those gangsters who came before -- although at times, just as crude in his methods -- or was lucky enough to have blatantly corrupt, receptive mayors in Chicago and Cicero when he came to power.
The author does a good job of showing how the federal government wanted to get Al Capone in the worst way and finally figured out how to do it with the Income Tax Code. The book lays out the dogged determination and methods of the agents who persevered to nail him. In the end, given the author's somewhat sympathetic portrait of Capone, you feel sorry that he got caught, and even sorrier to learn of how he was treated by fellow inmates at Alcatraz. Most biographers seem to gravitate toward either abhorring or loving their subjects and this author is no exception, tending toward the latter.
I recommend this book. Unless you are a Capone fanatic and know all there is to know about him already, the factual presentation will not put you off. I frankly did not know if I was reading the truth or not, but it seemed like it, and it was interesting and I thought, reasonably well-written. I am curious if there is any difference in the texts or otherwise in the newer paperback edition, versus the original hardback, which is what I read.

In the end, cannot be relied upon
By M. Pitcavage
Capone: the Man and the Era, by Lawrence Bergreen, is a lengthy and extensively researched biography of Chicago gangster Al Capone, full of interesting details. Alas, all of this work has essentially been negated by the author's own credulousness and his repeated construction of edifices of the sheerest flights of fancy based on the flimsiest--or complete non-existence--of evidence. As a result, the reader is left questioning the accuracy of almost everything in the book--especially as it is not well sourced.

Let me give you some of the most egregious examples.

First, based solely on a single piece of circumstantial evidence, Bergreen decides that Al Capone was a long-term cocaine addict. The evidence? A medical examination upon his entrance into prison revealed a perforated septum, which sometimes occurs with cocaine abusers. Based solely and completely on this one fact, Bergreen not only concludes that Capone must have been a heavy user of cocaine, but he repeatedly refers throughout the book to Capone's cocaine use, even though he does not have a single eyewitness account (out of the tens of thousands of people who wrote or talked about Capone) of Capone ever, even once, taking cocaine. Now, when you realize that a number of conditions can create a perforated septum, including even "aggressive nose picking," the idea that it had to have been cocaine is simply ridiculous. By the way, apparently syphilis--which Capone infamously had--can also sometimes cause a perforated septum.

It would have been entirely justified for Bergreen to have speculated on the possibility that perhaps Capone had been a cocaine user, and left it at that. Instead, based on very poor evidence, he repeatedly states it as absolute fact.

Second, and worst of all, Bergreen comes to the conclusion that Al Capone was merely a pawn, and that the real racketeering boss in Chicago was a minor Chicago Heights mobster, Frank LaPorte. According to Bergreen, Capone was just the public face, and that it was LaPorte who gave the orders. Upon what evidence does Capone base this outrageous promotion of LaPorte (generally considered one of Capone's henchmen, though in later years, after Capone was kaput, he rose to more prominence)? ABSOLUTELY NONE. It is sheer invention, which Bergreen repeats as fact. I have read thousands of biographies and works of history, and this utter fabrication strikes me as one of the most egregious self-deluding fantasies I have ever come across. Does anybody think that if Al Capone had been taking orders from Frankie LaPorte that it could have somehow remained secret? Bergreen has no evidence on which to back up this theory, which is frankly beyond bizarre.

Third, Bergreen engages in some pretty outrageous medical determinism. It is well known that Capone developed neurosyphilis, which resulted in a significant degradation of his mental faculties from the late 1930s onward. Unfortunately, knowing some of the symptoms of neurosyphilis, Bergreen cannot restrain himself from attributing all sorts of actions and reactions on Capone's part in earlier years to the debilitating effects of this disease. He doesn't speculate that the syphilis may have played a role; time and again, he simply blatantly asserts it. This is quite unfortunate, given that the first documentable symptoms exhibited by Capone occurred only after his arrival at Alcatraz. In other words, Bergreen literally has no way of knowing at all, yet this does not even slow him down a bit.

The book is full of other, more minor examples of this same thing. Bergreen repeatedly exudes a credulousness--especially with interview subjects--that suggests no critical faculties were engaged at all. He seemingly makes no effort to confirm or deny the accounts that people tell him or that he reads (with the exception of Elliot Ness, whose overblown accounts were already very well known). As a result, he whitewashes Capone's "lost" brother, who became a crooked lawman in Nebraska, accepting a relative's account of the man as a sort of latter day hero, while other biographers have noted his bad reputation and criminality. With an infamous figure like Capone, any biographer must be doubly skeptical at accepting the accounts of people who claim to have known or interacted with him, but Bergreen left his incredulity at the door.

This is all unfortunate, for the book is well-written and does represent a lot of research. Alas, it simply cannot be relied upon. For people interested in a more reliable account of the life of Al Capone, I recommend instead Robert J. Schoenberg's "Mr. Capone."

Doesn't Do Al Justice
By Rick "Mad Dog" Mattix
If you're looking for a good in-depth study of Al Capone or the Prohibtion beer wars in Chicago, this is not the book for you. If you're looking for a biography that gets wildly sidetracked from its subject and, as an added bonus, offers questionable revisions to the Capone story, this is just the book for you. The story of Capone's "lost" brother "Two-Gun" Hart is nothing really new and Bergreen's new emphasis on him presents the family's fictional account rather than the real story. James Capone, a.k.a. "Two-Gun" Hart, was not the honest lawman Bergreen portrays him as, nor was he was a war hero. Hart lost his respected place in the community of Homer, Nebraska when his tales of wartime heroism were exposed as a sham and he could provide no proof of military service. His tough image as a "two-gun" cop resulted mostly from drunken brawls with Indians who proved tougher than he was. Bergreen devotes a third of the book to this boring fraud who makes brother Al seem, in comparison, a paragon of honesty to those who know the true facts. Another third is devoted to the colorless "Untouchable" Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, who was far less interesting than the character in the fictional TV series and movie. His story would be best told elsewhere. One section of the book deals, inaccurately, with the Depression desperadoes: Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, etc.,--and adds nothing to the Capone story. Bergreen's report on the Thompson submachine gun, the Capone gang's trademark weapon, with its description of heavy, bruising recoil and near-impossibility to control, is a joke to anyone who's ever handled a Model 21 tommy gun. The gang wars, which should occupy center stage in a definite bio of America's most notorious mobster, are treated rather sketchily. Some other family info is way off the mark. And, on the flimsiest of evidence, Bergreen makes Capone both a pawn of the Chicago Heights mob and a cocaine addict. This is a poor excuse for a Capone biography...

Verdachtsmomente: Geschichte (German Edition), by Selim Özdogan

Review

"Photographs, schematic line drawings, classic Canadian war art and even cartoons illustrate this well-written history."

(the Globe and Mail)

"... readers will appreciate the top-notch colour and black and white photos (including rare photos), and in particular the high quality art plates detailing Canada's ships and submarines. In addition, the drawings of technical maritime innovations of the Canadian Navy will also be welcome." (David Pugliese Esprit de Corps)

"The book is beautifully produced by Dundurn Press, with many excellent illustrations, including a number of fine examples of war art."

(the Chronicle-Herald)

"This very attractive tome will do much more than grace the coffee tables of naval historians and ‘old salts’ (although it will perform that task extremely well). Its excellent text and complementary illustrations will enlighten all who read it and improve their understanding of the development of Canada’s Navy and the importance of the service to the nation’s past, present, and, undoubtedly, future as well – no matter what their prior knowledge of the subject." (World Ship Review)

"The Naval Service of Canada is a first-rate and heavily illustrated volume that will appeal to those currently serving or retired from the navy or anyone with a strong interest in Canadian maritime matters."

(Dave Pugliese's Defense Watch Military Blog)

"For the navy person ... there's The Naval Service of Canada 1910-2010 ... Here's a collection of essays tracing the history of the Royal Canadian Navy ... There are many photographs, spec sheets for various craft, and reproductions of paintings." (Bill Robertson Saskatoon Star-Phoenix)

"This is a magnificent coffee table book."

(Starshell Canadian Naval Journal)

Great volume - and available in French too. A much needed volume on the Royal Canadian Navy. It has come at the right time. My fellow citizens are generally a peaceful lot, but should not allow the Navy to deteriorate. The RCN is in a crisis today. Its ships and aircraft need to be modernised, and this modernisation needs to be done through home based industries that are becoming moribund due to the lack of major naval construction in Canada. Thanks for this timely volume on our wonderful naval heritage.
