Environment, history, land use and current economic trends.

I decided to read this book because of my interest in environmental history, and land use is obviously related. I had read a bit about Mongolia, but knew about it mostly as a sort of homeland that saw formidable tribes of horsemen erupt out every few centuries. This book offers a corrective. Mongolia is a place where people live, in a most harsh climates, and their use of land has taken that into account. The most basic fact is that the current situation of about three million people in about one million mostly harsh square miles (with a million in the capital!) dictates a rural economy based on herding. Endicott offers a good historical overview.
And as she describes it, things are about to change. Mongolia has substantial mineral resources, including gold and especially coal. The Chinese are interested, so the economy is increasingly based on exporting raw materials. The nation is between China and Russia, both intimate in Mongolian history, first as conquests and later as outside forces intervening in the country.
Endicott's book is extremely informative for such a short book. The focus really is on land use.
