About the Author

Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov is an international leader in palliative care. He is Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit at CancerCare Manitoba. His seminal publications on psychosocial issues in advanced illness have helped define core competences and standards of palliative end-of-life care.

Dr. Chochinov has been a guest lecturer in many major academic institutions around the world. He has been lauded for his contributions to palliative care, with awards and recognitions coming from the Canadian Medical Association, the International Psycho-oncology Society, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and the American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2014 he was inducted as an Officer in the Order of Canada.

This is an important book for hospice care!

I discovered this book after reading about Dr Chochinov's research published in The Lancet journal and it is nothing short of remarkable. The first part of the book focuses on this critical research and proves the science-based conclusion which the power of "Dignity Therapy' has upon a patient's life during the last few days or weeks.
The remaining book spells out exactly 'how to' create this same dignity document for terminal patients regardless of setting. Several people I know have read this important book and we have begun the process of bring this very critical work to our hospice. If you are involved in anyway with hospice or palliative care or terminally ill patients or family member, you REALLY want to read this book. I cannot imagine a finer or more important process for a dying person!!

A thoughtful approach to end of life concerns, detailing an approach to help dying persons review their lives to prepare a "living on" document to provide insight to survivors. Not everyone would be up for the intensive nature of these conversations, but for those who are, this book provides detailed advice, raises thoughtful concerns and advocates for "doing it right."

Best reference in print for Dignity Therapy and Dignity Conserving Care

It would be inaccurate to say that I just finished Dr. Chochinov's "Final Words for Final Days," because I find myself using this book as an excellent reference on dignity conserving care. I expect that I will never be truly finished with the book. Dr. Chochinov's surgically precise word choice makes him the Dean Koontz of palliative care literature.

Long story short My friend Peter was a train buff and showed me some of the pics he got from Mr McCully. Peter had a dark room and did his own black @ white pictures..He had gotten some of the photographs from Mr McCully of Dieppe ...Well being from there myself I thought WOW this is great ...AND THEY WERE...I just wish there were more .I`m not sure what happend to Peter we lost touch.But I know that the house in Lakeburn where I grew up was not there as Dad had not built it yet in the old airport photos...I wish I could find old Moncton Pics as well .I won`t be here forever so it`s great to see what was...Thank You Amazon for this great book...sign me off as A REAL HAPPY OLD GUY...Paul Saulnier

My Teacher Flunked The Planet by Bruce Coville

I have all four books in the My Teacher Is An Alien series, and all of them are great, but this climactic conclusion to the series is the most deep, touching, and downright SCARY of the series. In it, the aliens take down the three kids on an expedition to Earth to check out what should be done about the planet, which is the only planet EVER to be smart enough to achieve space travel, but dumb enough to have wars. Some of the places where they go chilled me to the bone, learning more about the evils of human nature.

In short, this is not the book to read if you're looking for a nice, cheerful book. In fact, it shouldn't be read at all without first reading the first three books in the series, which start out much simpler, and eventually build up to this one. However, it's still a great book, it's just that you'll be halfway through it and you'll say out loud "Geez, the human race sucks!"

This was an incredible ending to a fun series that was started with My Teacher is an Alien. While it remained fun, it was also much more intense, like ice water suddenly dumped on you unexpectedly.

But I think it's "kid safe." As a child I saw Return to Oz and had horrid nightmares; by the age of 10 I read a short horror story for adults where I find out that the man telling the story is insane and his family is dead and I broke out in tears. Yet as sensitive as I was, this book did not cause a severe reaction, but pulled me in with its shocking surprises, both hopeful and horrid. Bruce Coville has done a truly amazing job at making the horrors of the world accessible to kids (though probably not younger than 10) without being either traumatizing or patronizing about it, though he did (thankfully) gloss over some of the worse parts. (Example: "What had already been done to those people was so ugly I cannot bring myself to describe it, even though the memory of it remains like a scar burned into my brain with a hot iron.")

Furthermore, I would add that this is not a book promoting any ideology. This doesn't encourage your children to grow up and vote Democrat or Republican, or embrace socialism or libertarianism. This is a book promoting VALUES. And contrary to the propaganda of many ideologues and Party Pushers, values and ideology are two completely different things.

All ideologies, to my knowledge, explain the ways that they think are best for solving the problems Coville brings up. But values determine what gets done; ideology detemines how it gets done. A revolution that changes ideology but not values will only change the HOW things get done, not WHAT gets done. Even functioning anarchies (communes, tribal, even regions like Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War) show that the values that are shared by a community will be displayed, no matter what system is in place.

If I get into an ideological debate with someone who shares the same values as I do, then what we're debating is the best way to solve the same problem, not debating if the problem exists or how important it is. I also find that I much prefer the company of people who have different political leanings from myself but share my values to those who share my political leanings but not my values. I think that Bruce Coville, intentionally or unintentionally, has also expressed this view ("...not the leaders, not the government, just the people..."). Which is to say, don't fear that your child will be brainwashed into serving some political agenda, though Coville might get help your child to care in the first place.

Finally, the book does show much that is noble and good about humanity, too. I found it to be ultimately hopeful, if sobering.

In many ways, it's a child's version of Carl Sagan's Contact. While Contact has a credible alien society, IMO, My Teacher Flunked the Planet has entertaining aliens. But both books help us, kid or adult, look seriously at the insanity of our planet's societies, and also the hope.

The Thrilling Conclusion to an Excellent Sci-Fi Series

In the final book of the, My Teacher is an Alien, series Susan, Duncan and Peter (the respective main characters of the previous 3 books) come together in an attempt to stop the aliens from destroying Earth.

The political views Coville relates thru this story can be a little challenging for the young audience that the book is intended for. I by no means think that this is a bad thing however. The somewhat negative view expressed that humans are a dangerous species can only make us look at ourselves and strive for improvement. A quality I feel anybody can benefit from.

I have a lot of fun memories reading all 4 books in this series. When I was in middle school I would often spend my rainy weekends in my room reading this series over and over again. Each book has its own unique charm, this last one for example is by far the most serious of the series, which provided an excellent ending and pushed an important message for humanity.

Errors in grammar and content

I just read the very first article in this book (page 4, last paragraph). It refers to "mon femme". This word is not masculine. Oops!

Tried again. Second choice was the article on "Francophonie canadienne" (p. 18, paragraph 1) where it refers to "les provinces du Nord qui sont encore appelées les 'provinces maritimes' du Canada". The Maritime provinces are not the northern provinces of Canada (I am Canadian).

I only read two articles and they both had errors. I don't trust this book as a source of French that should be learned or taught.

Great idea for a book, but the editors of "Think French" magazine who created this book need to do a bit more work. These kinds of errors shouldn't get past editors at all, but it's especially bad in a book intended for students who want language samples to copy and learn from.

Good news and Bad news

The good news about this book is that includes over 90 very good written subjects in different aspects of french culture, the bad news is that only 26 of those 90 subjects have a an audio track !! it would have been great to have 90 tracks covering different pronunciation difficulties, i guess the authors ran out of space on their hard drive !!!

At last!

At last, a combination french reader with an audio to follow along. Of all the audio-reader combos I've tried, this is the best. The way this is set up, the reader is forced to think in french since the accompanying word lists are not intrusive. Following the recommendations given in the instructions, I found that my comprehension of spoken french has increased considerably. I wish I had this when I was studying french in school.

About the Author

Since 1949, David Ricardo Williams has lived in Duncan, B.C. where he practiced law for over thirty-five years. He has written extensively about lawyers, judges, and the courts. Among his literary awards are the University of British Columbia Medal for Canadian Biography, awarded for his book Sir Mathew Baillie Begbie: The Man for a New Country; the British Columbia Book Prize for non-fiction for his biography of Sir Lyman Duff; and the award of the Crime Writers of Canada for the best book of true crime published in 1993 for With Malice Aforethought. This book is Williams' thirteenth published work.

• Seekers,
  who adopt religious, philosophical, or spiritual beliefs to create meaning in
  their lives
  
  

Drawing on research results and anecdotes
from working with the bereaved over the past ten years, Berger examines how a
person’s worldview is affected after a major loss. According to her findings, people
experience significant changes in their sense of mortality, their values and
priorities, their perception of and orientation toward time, and the manner in
which they “fit” in society. The five types of grieving, she finds, reflect the
choices people make in their efforts to adapt to dramatic life changes.

About the Author

Susan A. Berger, EdD, LICSW, counsels people who are confronting significant loss and other life changes. She also trains professionals in using her unique approach to helping the bereaved. She has twenty-five years’ experience in the health and mental health fields as a researcher, practitioner, administrator, and consultant in both Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.

She lectures widely in professional healthcare, business, government, and university settings. She has held faculty appointments at three colleges, teaching courses in human behavior and psychology. She has also served as a hospice volunteer. Dr. Berger is herself a survivor of early parental loss.

Helped Me After Death of Husband

I really liked this book, because it gave me valuable insights into my relationships following the death of my husband. I had been in love with my husband and married for 25 years. After he died suddenly, I waited a few years and then began dating again. Each time I had a date, I was secretly "looking to get back to normal" (as the book explained) It is one of the ways we grieve. For me "normal" was being in love and being married 24/7.

That is just too much to expect and too much responsibility to put on a simple date. When I realized I was doing this in my relationships, I was able to back off, relax and enjoy them more. Now I have been dating a wonderful man for the last year and we may or may not get married. The important thing is that I am really enjoying his company and we make each other happy - enough for now.

This book not only helped save me, it helped save my future relationships.

Well worth the read

Whether or not you have lost someone close to you, there are important and valuable messages throughout the book of how people deal with loss. It's a thoughtful, well-written account not only of the author's personal story of loss, but the stories of men, women, children, sisters, brothers, grandparents - all who have experienced loss and dealt with it in different ways. This book provides an understanding for anyone who has experienced or knows anyone who has experienced a loss in their life. The book is well worth the read.

A Gem of a Book

This work assembled by Dr. Berger is a gem among bereavement guides. Given that we are all touched by loss, those who are actively grieving the death of a loved one, as well as those providing counseling and support can benefit from the wisdom and direction contained in this book. For, as Susan Berger points out, griever and counselor alike are both forever in the process of resolving loss.

Moving through the pages of The Five Ways We Grieve is like sitting with a dear friend who warmly unfolds for us the mystery and complexity of the devastating event and resultant turmoil that has stopped our life as we have known it. Dr. Berger does not exempt herself as she puts before us her own story of loss that prompted the years of personal discernment and redefinition that resulted in this valuable collection of insights.

Do not anticipate handholding sessions as the chapters progress. Throughout the book we are all challenged to go deep inside to define how we see ourselves reshaped by loss. We are asked to find ourselves among her five styles of grieving, and what steps we are prepared to take to move our lives forward to a meaningful and hope-filled place.

I find that Dr. Berger's insights and confronting questions are equally valuable in assisting us to move through the non-death related losses that we necessarily encounter as they alter how we see ourselves and the world around us.

In 1984, a Moroccan national named Abdelkrim Belachheb walked into Iannis Restaurant, a trendy Dallas nightclub, and gunned down seven people. Six died. As a direct result of this crime, during the 1985 regular session the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 8--the “multiple murder” statute--to make serial killing and mass murder capital crimes. Belachheb’s case serves as an excellent example to explore capital punishment and the insanity defense. Furthermore, Belachheb’s easy entry into the United States (despite his violent record in Europe) highlights our contemporary fear over lax immigration screening and subsequent terrorism. The case is unique in that debate usually arises from an execution. Belachheb was given life imprisonment and is currently under maximum security--a fate some would argue is “worse than death.” He is scheduled to have his first parole hearing in 2004, the twentieth anniversary of his crime. “This is a superbly written book about an extraordinary case whose significance ranged from influencing death penalty legislation to directly foreshadowing the types of security lapses that led to September 11th. The confessed and convicted defendant could not be sentenced to death due to a quirk in the state law, and could only be given life imprisonment - arguably "worse than death." House Bill 8, the "multiple murder" statute, was passed directly in response to the case. Worse Than Death examines all sides of this horrific incident, including the legal, political, and cultural debates concerning it. This criminology and judicial case study has direct relevance to present day concerns about violent immigrants and our contemporary legal system nationwide.
