About the Author
Catherine Asaro received a doctorate in physics from Harvard University, has published a number of papers on theoretical physics and was a physics professor until 1990, when she established Molecudyne Research. A former ballerina, she has performed with ballets and in musicals on both coasts. She lives with her husband and daughter in Columbia, Maryland.

My favorite of the Skolian Saga books

Catherine Asaro blends hard core science fiction with fully developed characters. Perhaps because I read it first, this is one of my favorite of her Skolian Saga books. Since the heroine is from a primative planet, Asaro can explain her universe without it sounding awkward. Start here, you'll get hooked on the series.

Highly deserving of the Nebula Award

Catherine Asaro's "The Quantum Rose" is one of the best novels I have read. She gets both the science and character development right. With a PhD from Harvard in Chemical Physics, she knows how to put the science in science fiction. Each chapter is subtitled by some concept in quantum physics. The characters play the roles of objects in quantum scattering theory, with an explanatory essay of all this in the back of the book.
Her talent with developing characters and building up to climactic scenes also shines through. For those familiar with mathematics, the main character, Kamoj, is a sort of Ramanujan but with politics. Kamoj comes from a primitive civilization, yet she is brilliant in leading a nation, as well as learning about and then dealing with political situations she's never encountered before. She also has her own personal battles, which she handles with an incredible resilience.
The character development is so good that I started to lose track of the fact that I was reading a book rather than living in the world Asaro created. One of the most difficult things, it seems, to get right in books and movies is making the interactions between characters believable, and Asaro does this very aptly. The way Kamoj transforms is subtle and in increments, which makes the ending all the more powerful.
So all in all, I recommend the book highly - thumbs up for a five star novel and author.

Fascinating on many levels

Originally I thought that the author would be doing hard science fiction and was a bit disappointed to find Psions at the center of her universe. In fact the word Psion brought back memories of Amazing stories and its kindred.... Obviously we are in a world of Magic.. as per Clarke's exposition. In fact what most impressed me in her stories was her ability to create very dramatic scenes and on the other hand personality conflicts as well as internal conflicts. I understood this as being Grand Opera and Ballet rather than simple Space Opera. But if you read her epilogue to this book you will see that Mathematics (and Particle Physics) structured this book in a truly beautiful manner.
