Didactic perfection
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book indeed does the impossible, for it introduces, at a level accessible to undergraduate physics and mathematics students, a subject that ranks as the most formidable construction ever attempted in mathematical physics. Using highly esoteric mathematical concepts, string theory, and its modern metamorphosis, M-theory, requires a high concentration of mental effort and long periods of time to assimilate. It has been difficult for students and those who are curious about string theory to find books or papers that are effective in explaining it from a perspective that gives insight into its many intricacies. This book is one of the few that does that, and it deserves the highest ranking of any of the books in mathematical physics that are currently in print. The author, a noted contributor to the field, has produced a book that will certainly motivate many to take up the subject of string theory, and these individuals can be introduced to it early in their education, instead of having to wait for the second or third year of graduate school. In addition, professional mathematicians can gain the needed physical insight from the perusal of the book, and then apply their unique talents and perspectives to extending the frontiers of string theory, which, to emphasize again, is a subject that requires a tremendous amount of mathematical knowledge and skill. Hopefully this book will be used in the university so as to give students an appreciation of the most complex and fascinating theories ever constructed in the history of physics.

The author's strategy is to introduce the reader to string theory by studying physics in high dimensions. This is done early on, by studying Lorentz invariance in more than three spatial dimensions, and by discussing the notion of `compact' dimensions. In addition, the author studies the quantum-mechanical square well problem with an extra (compact) dimension. This example gives the reader some insight into what can happen to the quantum-mechanical spectrum when a compact dimension is present. Throughout the book, the author makes use of light-cone coordinates, which masks to a large extent the relativistic covariance of the theory, but does have the advantage of making the quantization of the string straightforward. The peculiarities of light-cone coordinates are discussed in some detail, but the author explains them in a way that alleviates any doubt as to their use and physical meaning. The author does devote an entire chapter to the treatment of covariant quantization however. In this discussion the reader will get a first look on how difficult it is to quantize a system with constraints, this giving rise to the famous Virasoro operators. The covariant quantization of strings treats of course all coordinates the same, and this introduces the reader to another surprise from the standpoint of the traditional formalism of quantum mechanics, namely that the usual Hilbert space constructions are not valid, since the states that are constructed can have negative norm. In addition, the author is not able to derive the critical dimension in his treatment of covariant quantization since he wants the book to be accessible to undergraduates.

Another virtue of this book is that the author does not expect the reader to remain passive when reading the book. Short exercises and "quick calculations" are dispersed throughout the chapters so as to reinforce the reader's understanding of the topics. In addition, there are good problem sets at the end of each chapter. The "quick calculations" are fun to work out and also serve to slow the overly eager reader from rushing ahead before some of the more fundamental concepts are mastered.

The discussion on D-branes makes the reading of the book especially worthwhile, due to its clarity and the insights it grants on the physics. The role of Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions is readily apparent throughout. Due to the use of light-cone coordinates, the author is not able to treat the quantization of strings attached to D0-branes. The appearance of gauge fields (in this case Maxwell fields) when quantizing open strings on Dp-branes is brought out in detail. In his treatment of the quantization of open stretched strings between parallel Dp-branes, the author points out the need for using noncommutative geometry. Noncommutative geometry has received a lot of attention in recent years due to this connection with string theory. The author of course cannot bring in this kind of mathematics without departing from the level of the book. The origin of the Chan-Paton factors as being labels of D-branes, and not merely a computational strategy for obtaining Yang-Mills theories from open strings, is discussed briefly.

The author is quite aware of the skepticism expressed by newcomers to string theory on its physical relevance and experimental realization, for he makes a concerted effort to deal with the extent to which string theories can at least give the results of the Standard Model. He discusses the various approaches to string phenomenology, such as compactification via Calabi-Yau spaces and models based on M-theory. The author recognizes that there is much to be done in string phenomenology, but that significant progress has been made. His remarks should motivate many to enter the field with the goal of showing the derivation of the Standard model from string theory.

T-duality, certainly one of the most fascinating subjects in string theory, is given ample treatment in this book, and its physical interpretation made crystal clear. The presence of T-duality has been of great interest to mathematicians, because it is an example of what has been called `mirror symmetry', a topic that readers will encounter later on if they decide to pursue more advanced treatments of string theory.

Those readers who have encountered Born-Infeld electrodynamics in their travels through physics might be surprised to learn of its applicability in string theory. Being a nonlinear theory of electrodynamics, the Born-Infeld theory is usually thought of as being an historical curiosity. The author shows in detail, using T-duality, how Born-Infeld electrodynamics governs the electromagnetic fields on the world-volumes of D-branes.

Strings Everywhere
By Physics Graduate Student
Highly recommended!
Dr. Zwiebach's book is an excellent resource for individuals with at least an undergraduate education in physics who are interested in pursuing string theory and related topics. Advanced students in other disciplines can also benefit with some hard work. It is very well organized, starting with the necessary mathematics and relativistic formalism/notation later used in calculations. The book is very rewarding, leading the student with great detail through derivations and avoiding the common "it can easily be shown that..." statements found in other books. The most enjoyable thing is that you really can begin grasping the basics of string theory and branes. After going through this book (maybe in a one year course) the reader should be prepared enough to start looking at other books such as Hatfield, Polchinski, and Green et. al.

A New Kind of Physics
By Larry Musa
Zwiebach has written a book on string theory specifically for advanced undergraduates, and on this merit alone, there is a temptation to give many stars to this text, and this I believe is reflected in the existing reviews. Well deserved praise to Zwiebach for performing this valuable service for the physics community. It will be especially useful to serious undergraduates on helping them decide on whether or not to embark on string theory as a field of research. It provides a faster than normal overview into the subject. Instead of having to invest years in learning the subject, and then (maybe) decide if you do or don't believe this is the correct approach to unification of the fundamental laws, you can decide (maybe) sooner than later if your research efforts could have been directed to greener pastures, or if you are indeed safely on the path to the `holy grail' of physics.

Traditionally, advanced topics in theoretical physics require an undergraduate to first prepare himself with a firm grounding in classical physics (mechanics, EM, thermal, relativity) and quantum mechanics, and a solid grounding in mathematics. Then, after a certain maturity is achieved, the student can study Quantum Field Theory and general relativity and then, finally, string theory.

Zwiebach is attempting to shorten and the even circumvent the traditional learning curve. One might ask, is this possible and if so how? The method Zwiebach uses is to start with introducing 4-vector notation, and explain how to calculate in local coordinates. This is similar to the approach in many field or gauge theory texts, which is not a surprise since they also rely on 4-vector notation. No tensor analysis or differential geometry is provided, but this is fine for this level of a text. After the 4-vectors are introduced, the standard advanced topics are developed as needed. (Lagrangians, Hamiltonians, Maxwell, etc) Finally, the advanced concept is generalized to higher dimensions and the string theory analog is studied.

This approach works to explain the theory on a very elementary level, which was the intent, and the student is able to naively calculate in local coordinates.

I found it slightly annoying that Zwiebach seems to constantly overstate the case for string theory, or else he gives that impression because does not bother to address concerns sufficiently that any bright undergraduate would naturally have, and it is a tone that is present throughout the text. For example (there are more than a few, but for brevity, I list only one example): He says "Are we sure that string theory is a good quantum theory of gravity? There is no complete certainty yet, but the evidence is very good". (pg. 7) A scientist must be objective and explain the good and bad aspects of the theory with a dispassionate objectivity, and doubly so when there are no experiments to moderate one's theoretical speculations. The experimental fact is we don't observe 10 dimensions in the lab (i.e., we only still see 3 space and one time coordinate). The experimental fact is we don't observe compactification of dimensions as physical phenomena. There is zero evidence for this compactification, and this compactification explanation is almost epicycle in nature, as a way to explain why we don't observe those 10 dimensions to begin with. By contrast, Polchinski in his "String Theory", vol. 1, explains how the curling up, or compactification, is consistent (i.e., it is not forbidden) with the geometry of general relativity, since in GR, space-time is dynamic. Also by comparison, Kaku in his "Introduction to Superstrings and M-Theory" seems to take the objections to string theory more seriously, and presents a nice list of the more important objections to the theory. Kaku's book, incidentally, would be a rival text for Zwiebach at the advanced undergraduate level, except it does not have exercises at the end of the chapters, and so is more useful as a reference.

At times, it seems Zwiebach demonstrates occasional lapses in physics erudition...We are informed on page 32 that Planck's constant first appeared in the famous E= (h-bar) w equation, where w is the angular frequency of the photon. Even Freshman physics courses teach Planck was quantizing oscillators in 1900, and Einstein's theory of the photoelectric effect in 1905 (for which he later received the Nobel Prize) where the photon was introduced, was more than a few years away. We are told that the Born-Infeld and related nonlinear theories are as fundamental as the Maxwell equations, if not more so. This is a more advanced error, but amazing nonetheless. Maxwell is a classical, non-quantum theory only. The Born-Infeld equation attempts to explain nonlinearities that are quantum mechanical in nature, where Maxwell does not apply. This is explained even in the introduction to Jackson. Born-Infeld and the related non-linear theories also have an upper bound on the field strength, which Maxwell does not. Coincidentally, the electric fields on D-branes also have an upper bound, so now you can guess as to why Born-Infeld has been elevated to the same status as Maxwell -- because Born-Infeld agrees with string theory, of course. I expect gaps in the rather varied and advanced mathematics one must know, but not in such basic physics --how does this happen at MIT, and in a Cambridge University text? My guess is that string theory is a very demanding mistress, to the point that only strings and mathematics can be concentrated upon, sometimes unfortunately, to the detriment of equally important areas of physics. Perhaps this should be a consideration at least, for the budding undergraduate string theorist.

Despite the bias and the occasional lapses, a good text. Recommended.

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's Story of Research and Recovery, by Karyn Seroussi

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Development Disorder is an essential guide for parents with autistic children who hope to better understand and intervene with the disorder.

When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to abnormal brain development. So Karyn and her husband got to work -- Karyn implementing their program at home while her husband tested his theories at the scientific lab where he worked.
Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is an inspiring and suspenseful chronicle of how one couple empowered themselves to challenge the medical establishment that promised no hope -- and found a cure for their child.
Here are the explanations and treatments they so carefully researched and discovered, a wealth of crucial tools and hands-on information that can help other parents reverse the effects of autism and PDD, including step-by-step instructions for the removal of dairy and gluten from the diet, special recipes, and an explanation of the roles of the key players in autism research.

What can be more devastating for parents than to learn that their child is autistic? The severely debilitating neurological disorder, which affects social and language development, can be difficult to treat. When her son was diagnosed with autism at 19 months, Seroussi, a small-business owner and wife of a research chemist, determined to do everything in her power to help her child achieve normal functioning. In addition to pursuing recommended speech and behavior modification therapies for her son, Seroussi devoted her considerable energies--often against medical advice--to researching alternative approaches. Her own experience and a growing body of scientific evidence pointed to connections between autism and diet. And though the theory has not yet been proven, Seroussi says, research now suggests that autism may be an autoimmune disorder triggered in rare cases by an infant's measles-mumps-rubella immunizations. Convinced that the inability to digest certain proteins was contributing to her son's condition and that his autism was related to his reaction to MMR vaccines, Seroussi eliminated suspect foods from his diet; he made such dramatic improvement that, by age four, he was functioning normally. Now a crusader for dietary intervention, Seroussi has written a book that will give hope to many families--though she cautions that not every autistic child responds to such treatment. She includes a FAQ section, gluten- and casein-free recipes and resources, and a list of organizations and readings. Agent, Kathi Paton. (Feb.) FYI: Seroussi is co-founder of ANDI (the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention) and co-editor of the ANDI News.

We've seen it with our own eyes
By A Customer
This book is one of 3 that changed our family's life. (Facing autism which made us know in our hearts the diagnosis was right & William shaw's book which details more of the science of this stuff are the other two.)I believe that there are many reasons children are on the autistic spectrum and that this book will only help some.
Our son now 4 1/2 was diagnosed with PDD NOS within days of turning 3. We saw some familiarities with the medical issues in this book and thought it worth looking into. (relux, ear infections, persistently loose stools, Milk obsession, food intolerances affecting behaviour in a cousin, bad reaction to vaccin in a normal sibling).
Wanting to be more scientific than 'try it and see' we had a number of tests done over the following 6 months. Sure enough the results were consistent with the theories: food sensitivities, enormous yeast& bacteria overgrowth, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, amino acid imbalances. I cried for a week when I realised the 'lifestyle change' the diet would mean (just coping with life seemed such hard work). But I can honestly say that it doesn't seem that onerous now and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I first feared.
We made the changes progressively - Dietary eliminations. Vitamin & mineral supplementation. Probiotics, antifungals. We saw improvements in 'behaviour'and what convinced us that these were real and not just wishful thinking was that they were accompanied by other changes:
*At 3 1/4 you could have called our son's name from 2 ft away, all day and unless you were touching him or in his face he didn't know it. After 3 days CFGF he suddenly responded to his name from 20 ft away from then on he would look up/around when his name was called. Having woken up 5 times a night EVERY night for months beforehand our son slept through and in the last 18 months he has woken up in the night on only 3 separate occaisions (wet bed/ fell out). I don't need to tell anyone going through this kind of sleep deprivation themselves what a difference that made.
*When we treated the yeasts and bacteria we saw a change in attention span, eye contact and a spontaneous desire to talk to US. This coincided with his first(that I could remember) "beautifully" formed poops. I can't imagine how we'd have managed potty training without this change). Post treatment tests showed great improvement in results. We have had recently had confirmation of this when our suspicions of a problem this summer (poor attention span, weak eye contact, less complex speech) led us to test again and following alarming results we treated the yeasts again and Wow, what a difference.
We think we have seen improvements from supplementation changes but the more gradual changes are possibly due to other reasons. We are great fans also of his wonderful ABA and AVB therapy he has received in the last year. We are still making changes but it certainly seems that the more normal his body chemistry is the more normal he seems. We believe the changes we've made have helped him be able learn from his excellent teachers.
Our son is catching up fast. His communication skills are now only about 6 months behind (from being 'in the bottom 1 percent of children' at age 2 1/2) and people who don't know autistic spectrum disorders don't guess he's any other than a little behind in speech. He will be attending a normal kindergarten next year (no aide expected to be necessary) but continuing speech therapy probably.
It hasn't just saved our son. It's saved our sanity. Bringing up a son who had almost no ability to understand what was being said to him and was clearly so frustrated that he couldn't make his needs understood was like living on Mars. Between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 the tantrums were explosive and could last hours despite all the very good advice we did get from the state early intervention program. The need for routines was all encompassing. This book enabled us to open a window in our son's mind that we and his teachers could pull him through. I worried if doing all this biomedical stuff would change his "personality". Didn't I love him as he was??. It's difficult to explain but he is still quite definitely the same person and fixing the problems feels a bit like putting on my glasses in the morning. I can seem 'him' clearly now.
When I first told friends and family about what we were doing they smiled sweetly but obviously thought I was nuts. Now the change in our son has been such that I can't count the number of times I've been told "you should write a book about this". I tell them I would......but there already IS one.

A "Must Read" for Parents of Children with Autism
By Lisa S. Lewis
Karyn Seroussi has written a fascinating account of her son's recovery from autism. Yes, we've all been told that autism is a lifelong disability for which recovery is not possible, but the rules are apparently being rewritten. Do not let the fact that your doctor is behind the times keep you from reading this wonderful book, and trying the interventions it describes. Viewing autism as a biological disorder for which a cure is possible is an idea whose time has come, and we owe Ms. Seroussi a great deal for presenting it in such a well-written, and heartfelt manner. I couldn't put this book down, and read it in a single sitting. This book presents an important intervention which I have been using for several years. My child did not "recover" but is much improved. I am thrilled that a book is lending legitimacy to this important approach to treating autism.

WOW. Finally!
By Jean Baldridge Yates
Maybe, like me, you have considered drugs for your autistic child, but have been understandably reluctant. Maybe you are overwhelmed by the vast amounts of information bombarding you daily concerning the causes of autism. Maybe your educational intervention progran hasn't quite worked as well as you hoped it would.
If so, get this book. It deserves a place right next to Catherine Maurice's groundbreaking book on intervention through educational methods, LET ME HEAR YOUR VOICE. Actually, it deserves a place of honor right on your kitchen table, where you can refer to it everyday, easily. What Catherine Maurice did for education vis vis autistic children, this book does for dietary intervention.
Karyn Seroussi has written a practical, clear, acessible book about how your child's diet can affect his/her whole way of living in our world. She posits that the health (particularly, a damaged immune system) of your child is one of the major reasons your child diplays autistic behaviors. She has incorporated her own child, Miles, and her own family, in a most compassionate and perceptive way to demonstrate this. I found that, in and of itself, a comfort. We are all in this together, aren't we? We need to help each other. This book is all about helping OUR CHILDREN get better.
Parents of autistic children have it hard enough without having to sift through the incredible, time consuming theories and treatments that come our way daily. Karyn covers all of these and makes them understandable. She explains things. Then she gives you step by step directions to follow to actually improve the health of your own autistic child (or in my case, autistic children: I have two!) This book makes so much sense and is so exciting to read, I wrote this review as soon as I finished it. Even if my own children do not experience the same remarkable recovery that Karyn's son Miles did (she caught his autism really early), I know, from my other reading, that this book ultimately makes total sense... and that my sons will be immeasurably improved. For that, I am incredibly grateful. Thank you, Karyn Seroussi.

Beyond Behavior Management: The Six Life Skills Children Need, by Jenna Bilmes

Why do children do the things they do? What can teachers do to manage it all? While there is not a simple method for understanding and managing all behaviors or all children, teachers can give young children the social and emotional tools needed to grow and thrive on their own. Developed and tested in the classroom, Beyond Behavior Management, is a strength-based approach to guiding and managing young children's behavior by helping them build and use essential life skills—attachment, collaboration, self-regulation, adaptability, contribution, and belonging—into the daily life of the early childhood classroom. As a result, children will learn to exhibit more pro-social behaviors, work better as a community, and become excited and active learners.

This edition includes two new chapters and content reflecting early learning standards, new research, cultural diversity, and strategies to strengthen the home-school connection. Discussion and reflection questions, exercises, journal assignments, child profile templates, a planning worksheet, and sample scripts are also included.

Jenna Bilmes is an early childhood consultant and an instructional designer for WestEd Child and Family Services. She is a frequent presenter to teachers, administrators, and counselors nationally and internationally.

Fascinating, Practical, and Instantly Useful
By Layla Rowen
As soon as I had finished reading the first few pages, I knew I'd found a gem. This book sets forth to explain how we as the role models and guides can help children learn the skills that they need to become successful adults. One of my favorite parts in this book is on page 248: "Children want to be happy and have a nice day. Some children just don't know how."

If you struggle with "that" child with rough social interactions, has a hard time focusing, gives up easily on tasks, tantrums at transitions, pushes or hits others, appears to have never learned how to take turns, etcetera, etcetera, then this will be a very valuable tool. The basic premise is that children need to learn collaboration, adaptability, self-regulation, contribution, and feel attached and like they belong, just as much as (if not SO MUCH MORE than) they need to learn math, reading, and writing. These are skills like any other, and while we would not punish a child for not yet knowing multiplication tables, neither should we punish a child for not knowing how to gently join into play with several children at once.

I bought this book for a class that I will be taking in the fall, but I have already finished reading it and I have introduced many of the ideas into my preschool classroom. I look forward to going through it again in the fall.

A must have for individuals working with young children!
By Peg Cox
Jenna Bilmes approach to suppporting young children's social-emotional development and competence is very different from the traditional behavior managment approach and makes so much sense. Why should social-emotional development be supported differently than other areas of a development. Isnt' all development about developing skills? She provides many easily implemented strategies.

Best "behavior manual" going, if you think you need a manual. Digs deeper into causes of behaviors, challenges caregivers to look beyond their own demands and conveniences to help children develop necessary skills to function over the long haul.

Review
"[A] book...that captivates in childhood, and still delights in age."

Language Notes
Text: English (translation)
Original Language: Arabic

From the Inside Flap
Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever.
This volume reproduces the 1932 Modern Library edition, for which Bennett A. Cerf chose the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multivolume translation, and includes Burton's extensive and acclaimed explanatory notes. These tales, including Alaeddin; or, the Wonderful Lamp, Sinbad the Seaman and Sinbad the Landsman, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, have entered into the popular imagination, demonstrating that Shahrazad's spell remains unbroken.

A magic carpet ride like no other
By JLind555
Richard Burton's translation of "The Arabian Nights" is one of the oldest in existence and some people have a problem with this version; it's too old, antiquated, etc.; but for this reviewer, the very fact that it's an early translation lends the tales much of their charm; it underscores the fact that "The Arabian Nights" go back for hundreds of years, all the way back to "once upon a time". Richard Burton introduces us to Sharazad, that seductive storyteller who took the bull by the horns and dared to marry the sultan Shariyar who had been driven mad by the infidelity of his former wife and tried to exorcise the demons of her adultery by marrying a new wife every morning and slaying her that same night. Sharazad knows that a good tale can tame the savage beast much in the way music can, and she keeps the Sultan enchanted night after night with the tales that still enchant us in our own time. We all know about Aladdin and his magic lamp, and Ali Baba and the forty thieves, but there are loads of other treasures in this collection; my personal favorites, aside from Ali Baba, are the story of Ali the Persian (short, succinct, and very funny), and The Lady and Her Five Suitors, a hilarious tale of a woman who lures five men into a trap and then runs off with her boyfriend. And Sharazad, smart lady that she is, took care to insure her own future; not only does she regale her sultan with a thousand and one tales in as many nights, she also presents him with three children during that time, wins the heart of the sultan, and, we suppose, lives happily ever after.

No one knows where the tales originated. Burton suggests that the earliest may date from the 8th century A.D., and the latest may have been as recent as the 16th century, only 200 years before Antoine de Galland translated the tales into French and unfolded them like a magic carpet before the astonished and delighted eyes of his European readers. Burton translated them into English in 1885 and they have been weaving their own spell of enchantment for us ever since. When we open "The Arabian Nights" we step onto our own magic carpet and we're off on a ride of fun and fantasy that lasts until the last page when we close the book and come back down, reluctantly, to earth.

Burton, the Scholar and Adventurer, & The Arabian Nights
By jf
This is a phenomenal selection of the intricate web of fantasy commonly known as the "Arabian Nights."
Captain Burton's translation remains contested amongst scholars for its subjective indulgement and commentary (among other things). Nevertheless, his was a critical and monumental 16-volume endeavor that brought to the English world the legendary tales Shahrazad told King Shahryar--who exectued his mistresses after one night so as to preserve fidelity--in order to remain alive. It proved the most comprhensive and entertaining, and stands as the definitive translation for many.
But why should you bother with Burton, when you could go with Lane or Galland? As a reader, if your desire is to fully experience these tales as closely as possible in capturing that sense of adventure, excitement, of magic and morality that has fascinated imaginations for centuries, Burton's "plain literal translation" certainly dazzles and entertains, vividly, powerfully, without disappointment. You shall be drawn into the world of the thousand nights and a night, of Islam and Jinns, through Burton's archaic though eloquent diction--a part of the veil of fantasy--and his ample knowledge of Middle Eastern culture.
The present edition offers a vital, "representative" selection of these neatly woven and intertwining tales in one volume.
* Note: This can be fun, very enjoyable reading with patience, but the lack of paragraph breaks and the language may prove challenging for some.
Also: the hardcover is definitely a better choice, as it has placed the selected footnotes on the bottom of the page they appear on rather than the back of the book - like the paperback.

Wonderful tales and an excellent look at Arabic culture
By bixodoido
We are all familiar with the stories of Ali Baba, Aladdin, and Sinbad. But where did these tales come from? The answer lies in this wonderful (condensed) volume known as the 'Arabian Nights.'
The story is of a woman, Scheherazade, who marries a king. The king's custom is to spend one night with a woman and execute her in the morning. To avoid this, Scheherazade tells him a tale, but leaves part of it unfinished, thus gaining the king's interest and insuring her survival for another day so she can finish the tale. Being clever, she never finishes it, but keeps it continuously going, until the king finally spares her life.
The stories presented here, though often somewhat crude, have great moral lessons to be learned. The serve as a sort of moral reminder as to how a good person should act.
When Richard Burton translated the Nights, he collected as many manuscripts as possible and pieced together the tales. Many had been created centuries earlier, and were often told during gatherings among friends. Burton, through his unparalelled knack for translation, managed to capture all the magic and mystery that are the Arabian Nights.
Besides the delightful stories and good lessons to be learned, the Nights serve another purpose--they provide an intimate look at the culture of the time. By examining their legends, one can gain a basic understanding of how Arabic culture functions. There is as much to be learned about the people who tell these stories as there is from the stories themselves.
I read this book for historical and cultural value, and found it to be abundant in both. Besides that, though, I encountered a mesmerizing set of tales which will be entertaining to any audience, even (after some revision and editing) children.

Review

"While this book has the magic words "climate change" in its subtitle, many of the issues it addresses would be critical even if global temperatures were static or cooling. McClanahan and Cinner focus "on the local and regional impacts of climate change to coastal ecosystems and societies"... Their concern and thorough research of these issues is the strength of their book." -- Natural Hazards Observer

Fantastic Analysis and overview of Climate Adaptation in coastal ecosystems. Linkage between ecosystems and people is groundbreaking. Focus on the Western Indian Ocean a bit too much - but detailed data and field experience extremely interesting. Important work....

A First Course in Mathematical Analysis, by David Alexander Brannan

Mathematical Analysis (often called Advanced Calculus) is generally found by students to be one of their hardest courses in Mathematics. This text uses the so-called sequential approach to continuity, differentiability and integration to make it easier to understand the subject.Topics that are generally glossed over in the standard Calculus courses are given careful study here. For example, what exactly is a 'continuous' function? And how exactly can one give a careful definition of 'integral'? The latter question is often one of the mysterious points in a Calculus course - and it is quite difficult to give a rigorous treatment of integration! The text has a large number of diagrams and helpful margin notes; and uses many graded examples and exercises, often with complete solutions, to guide students through the tricky points. It is suitable for self-study or use in parallel with a standard university course on the subject.

Excellent first intro to Analysis
By A. Cox
This book pretty much copies the Real Analysis part of the Open University's excellent course 'Into to Pure Mathematics' which also covered Group Theory and Linear Algebra . If you're new to Analysis I cannot more highly recommend another book, though I would also recommend Spivak's Calculus which is at the same level, and pretty much covers the same material. I did the course (and have the book) and found it a breeze, all due to the excellently presented material, and the many examples, where like the SUMS books (of which I recommend most), all answers are givern in detail; which is important when you start more advanced maths (sic) and especially when you're teaching yourself! However it is only an introduction, but will prepare you for more advanced Analysis books like Rudin, Royden and my new favourite Knapp and his 2 Real Analysis books. Personally I wish they would produce more of the OU Maths courses in book format, as the material that I have read and studied has rarely been bettered in the standard books. Maybe this is a start of a new trend with the OU, I hope!

The best introductory text on analysis that I've seen.
By Andrew Bigelow
This book is a gem.

As the author states in the introduction, this is a student friendly book - the notes in the margins are really useful, the worked examples are clear and well thought out while the book has a good flow to it. A lot of thought has been put into this text and it shows. The bottom line is that I learnt a lot from this book and now feel ready to tackle more advanced texts.

Absolute Best Place to Start in Analysis
By Book Ninja
The reviews by Andrew Bigelow and A. Cox are right on the money! I can't really improve upon what they have written but would add that the fact that the solutions are included at the back of the book make this extremely useful for self study.... I also found the presentation on things like limits far superior to anything I have seen in many recent Calculus textbooks. If you are reading these reviews and are on the fence I wholly recommend you buy it!

The Spirit of the Appalachian Trail: Community, Environment, and Belief, by Susan Power Bratton

“Want to know what wilderness means to people who live it for over two thousand miles? Then read this extremely interesting, informative, intelligent, and thoughtful book.” —Roger S. Gottlieb, author of Engaging Voices: Tales of Morality and Meaning in an Age of Global Warming

“There is no doubt that Bratton’s book will be of value to students and scholars of leisure studies, recreation, and religion. Those who are familiar with the Appalachian Trail sense intuitively that a journey along its length kindles spiritual awakening; this book provides the hard data to prove it’s true.” —David Brill, author of As Far as the Eye Can See: Reflections of an Appalachian Trail Hiker

The Appalachian Trail covers 2,180 miles, passing through fourteen states from Georgia to Maine. Each year, an estimated 2–3 million people visit the trail, and almost two thousand attempt a “thru-hike,” walking the entire distance of the path. For many, the journey transcends a mere walk in the woods and becomes a modern-day pilgrimage.

In The Spirit of the Appalachian Trail: Community, Environment, and Belief, Susan Power Bratton addresses the spiritual dimensions of hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT). Hikers often comment on how their experience as thru-hikers changes them spiritually forever, but this is the first study to evaluate these religious or quasireligious claims critically. Rather than ask if wilderness and outdoor recreation have benefits for the soul, this volume investigates specifically how long-distance walking might enhance both body and mind.

Most who are familiar with the AT sense intuitively that a trek along its length kindles spiritual awakening. Using both a quantitative and qualitative approach, this book provides the hard data to support this notion. Bratton bases her work on five sources: an exhaustive survey of long-distance AT hikers, published trail diaries and memoirs, hikers? own logs and postings, her own personal observations from many years on the trail, and conversations with numerous members of the AT community, including the “trail angels,” residents of small towns along the path who attend to hikers? need for food, shelter, or medical attention.

The abundant photographs reinforce the text and enable visualization of the cultural and natural context. This volume is fully indexed with extensive reference and notes sections and detailed appendixes. Written in an engaging and accessible style, The Spirit of the Appalachian Trail presents a full picture of the spirituality of the AT.

Susan Power Bratton is professor of environmental studies. She is the author of Six Billion and More: Human Population Regulation and Christian Ethics, Environmental Values in Christian Art, and Christianity, Wilderness, and Wildlife: The Original Desert Solitaire.

Review

Mike Filey's column "The Way We Were" first appeared in the Toronto Sunday Sun not long after the first edition of the paper hit the newsstands and front porches on September 16, 1973. Since that day more than three decades ago, Mike's column has enjoyed an uninterrupted stretch as one of the paper's most popular features. In 1992 a number of his columns were reprinted in Toronto Sketches: The Way We Were by Dundurn Press. Since then another seven volumes of Toronto Sketches have been published, each of which has attained great success both with Toronto book buyers and with former Torontonians wishing to relive an earlier, gentler time in the city's past.

This ninth volume features a variety of stories, including a look at Toronto's 1904 inferno, the birth of Rex Heslop's Rexdale community, a visit to Sunnyside Amusement Park, and a few fascinating tales about the city's streetcars.

... years and I read it for many years (I like learning about the history of Toronto)
By Teena in Toronto
Mike Filey had a column in the Toronto Sun for about 30 years and I read it for many years (I like learning about the history of Toronto) ... this book is a compilation of some of his columns.

In this book, we learn about the plans to connect the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to the city (tunnels, bridge, landfill and even a cable car), Summerhill train station (now a liquor store), subways and streetcars, fires, Maple Leaf Gardens (now a grocery store), gas stations and more.

He also talked about the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health, in our 'hood, which has changed since the book was written. Throughout the years there have been numerous name changes - the Toronto Lunatic Asylum, the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, "999 Queen Street" and the Queen Street Mental Health Centre. The site was a Provincial Psychiatric Hospital operated by the Government of Ontario until 1998 when the Provincial Psychiatric Hospitals began to be transformed into public hospitals. In the last few years, there has been a redevelopment of the site, an integrated and mixed-use urban village.

Even though the book was published in 2006, it was still an interesting book because it dealt with many historical events in Toronto. If you live in Toronto or are from Toronto, you should check it out.
