Children in the Holocaust and World War II: Their Secret Diaries, by Laurel Holliday

Children in the Holocaust and World War II is an extraordinary, unprecedented anthology of diaries written by children all across Nazi-occupied Europe and in England.

Twenty-three young people, ages ten through eighteen, recount in vivid detail the horrors they lived through, day after day. As powerful as The Diary of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary, here are children's experiences—all written with an unguarded eloquence that belies their years. The diarists include a Hungarian girl, selected by Mengele to be put in a line of prisoners who were tortured and murdered; a Danish Christian boy executed by the Nazis for his partisan work; and a twelve-year-old Dutch boy who lived through the Blitzkrieg in Rotterdam. In the Janowska death camp, eleven-year-old Pole Janina Heshele so inspired her fellow prisoners with the power of her poetry that they found a way to save her from the Nazi ovens. Mary Berg was imprisoned at sixteen in the Warsaw ghetto even though her mother was American and Christian. She left an eyewitness record of ghetto atrocities, a diary she was able to smuggle out of captivity. Moshe Flinker, a sixteen-year-old Netherlander, was betrayed by an informer who led the Gestapo to his family's door; Moshe and his parents died in Auschwitz in 1944. They come from Czechoslovakia, Austria, Israel, Poland, Holland, Belgium, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia, England, and Denmark. They write in spare, searing prose of life in ghettos and concentration camps, of bombings and Blitzkriegs, of fear and courage, tragedy and transcendence. Their voices and their vision ennoble us all.

From School Library Journal
YA?Diary entries written by young people in ghettos, concentration camps, cities, and a Copenhagen prison camp offer insightful comments and glimpses of life during World War II. Each selection is introduced by a brief biography that includes the author's name, country, age, family circumstances before and during the war, and concludes with circumstances of death or postwar life. Nine girls and 14 boys, Jews and gentiles, aged 10 to 18, are featured. Teens should be interested in reading about the sexploits of Joan Wyndham, a 16-year-old London resident; her suburban neighbor, Colin Perry, 18, and his detailed recording of air raids; resistance fighter Hannah Senesh, 17; and Danish spy Kim Malthe-Brun, 18. A good selection for YAs interested in the experiences of their agemates from other times, the Holocaust, life during war, or those in need of a collective biography.?Barbara Hawkins, Oakton High School, Fairfax,

Each page is precious because each page is a life.
By Cipriano
This is a chilling, moving, important book in which 23 youth and youngsters try to understand the hatred and violence that engulfs their previously peaceful lives. The average age of the writers is around 13-14 years. For many of these children, these excerpts represent their final plea to the surviving world, fully understanding that they will not be a part of that world. Writing became their last and sometimes ONLY form of resistance. I found the very last entry of the unknown brother and sister in the Lodz ghetto to be especially moving. Without access to any other paper, the boy scrawled his diary entries into the margins of an old French novel. After the war was over, a next door neighbor returned to the wreckage of the house, and found the book with the boy's notes in it. If any one of us actually knew any one of those who wrote these diaries... if any one of them were a member of our own families, we would naturally value even one of their retrieved pages far above all of the other books we own, would we not? Well, as I read this book I realized many times that just because I did not know one of these children personally does not really diminish the inherent importance of any one of their pages... these children were all known and loved by their own families and friends. They should have been loved by those who were then acting as their mortal enemies, but sadly, they were not.
Some of these entries depict deprivations and describe atrocities that are near impossible for most of us today to imagine. Some would avoid the book on account of this, and that is understandable. We can go to horror novels to be deliberately horrified in a fictional sense, but it seems morbid to turn to non-fiction for the same results. But we must remember that we do not read non-fiction for the same reasons that we read fiction. We read non-fiction, not to dwell on or glory in horror, but to LEARN something about ourselves and others. There is an old saying "To dwell on history is to lose an eye; to ignore it is to lose both of them." Laurel Holliday has here edited a book which should not be ignored.

Children in the Holocaust and World War II: their secret diaris
By Donna
As a teacher I found this book to be an excellent way to personalize the experiences of the many child victims of the Holocaust for my students. They could see that these children had families, hopes, and dreams just like any other child although some were shattered by the Holocaust. My students could read about someone their own age and identify with them. I was disappointed with the inclusion of the Joan Wyndham diary for my own school setting. I teach eighth graders in a Catholic school and some of the discussion of her sexuality is inapproriate for my students. That is the only blemish on this wonderful book from my particular situation. It requires that I take extra caution when I use the book.

I am a 6th grade student, I read Chidren in the Holocaust and World War ||:Their Secret Diaries. This book has childrens diaries ages 10-18 it tells about the horrifying stories that children lived and witnessed. One of the children quoted "I don't want to die because I've hardly lived," said Eva Heyman 13 year old girl who was murdered at Auschwitz. I would seggest this book for young aldults,I think people should read this book so this problem does not happen again.

Reflections on the Neches: A Naturalist's Odyssey along the Big Thicket's Snow River (Temple Big Thicket Series), by Geraldine Ellis Watso

When Geraldine Watson’s father was a teenager around the turn of the last century, he spent a summer floating down the Neches River, called Snow River by the Indians. Watson grew up hearing his tales of the steamboats, log rafts, and the flora and fauna of East Texas. So when she was sixty-three years old, she decided to repeat his odyssey in her own backwater boat. Reflections on the Neches is both the story of her journey retracing her father’s steps and a natural and social history of the Neches region of the Big Thicket. The Neches, one of the last “wild” rivers in Texas, is now being subjected to dams. Watson’s story captures the wildness of the river and imparts a detailed history of its people and wildlife. Profusely illustrated with drawings by the author and including maps of her journey, Reflections on the Neches will appeal to all those interested in the Big Thicket region and those indulging a feeling of wanderlust–and float trips–down the river.

Review
“Reflections is not a book to skim. It should be absorbed, ideally from a canoe drifting down current in the Snow River. This book is a captivating blend of art and history and biological facts from a writer whose heart and soul has been bound up in the Big Thicket for a long, adventuresome, and sometimes combative lifetime. . . . You will be riveted by her tales of the fabled Ivory-billed woodpecker.”—East Texas Historical Association Journal

“This book makes the Neches River come alive and makes the reader want to find the nearest canoe in order to travel in her footsteps to rediscover the beauty that exists around each river bend. . . . In addition to the expected exquisitely detailed travelogue, Watson adds her superior observations as a naturalist, sharing geographical, geological, hydrographic and biological information on the Neches, the Big Thicket and Southeast Texas in terms that a layman can understand.”—Texas Gulf Historical and Biographical Record

“Like the river, Reflections on the Neches has a natural flow; like the river, it is charming. One is easily drawn into the world of the river, and into the lives of its people.”—Pete A. Y. Gunter, author of The Big Thicket and co-editor of The Big Thicket Guidebook

Interesting Book
By HornyToad
Not quite what I expected but interesting. It is about 25% about the river and its geology/wildlife/plants and 75% about the people and their ancestors who lived along the river and the fight to get the Big Thicket Preserve enacted. As a yellow dog Democrat she bashes Republicans but begrudgingly acknowledges that a Republican senator spearheaded the fight for the Big Thicket and a Republican President signed it into law.

Reflecting the Times
By PVR
At 60 years old, Geraldine Watson decided to make the eighty mile journey down the Neches River in the pineywoods of East Texas that she had wanted to take all her life. As a naturalist and Big Thicket activist, she had visited parts of the river many times over the years. In three separate segments, she floats down the river from Town Bluff to just north of Beaumont. On the way, the reader is treated to actual accounts of the trip along with memories and histories of the river, the land, and its people. There are beautiful memories, such as finding of a rare colony of yellow ladies slipper orchids in a hidden glen, celebrating with the river people; sad memories, such as the raping of the forests, the loss of her faithful dog, the hard times of the people inhabiting the river bottoms; and funny memories, such as hitching a ride off an island on a tugboat.

An absorbing memoir of past childhood
By Midwest Book Review
Deftly written by Geraldine Ellis Watson (a plant ecologist and former ranger for the National Park Service), Reflections On The Neches is an absorbing memoir of a past childhood as well as a commentary upon the natural and social history of the Neches (one of the last "wild" rivers in Texas, just now being subjected to dams) region of the Big Thicket country. A moving and insightful reflection of the ecology and the natural beauty of the land itself, Reflections On The Neches is informed and informative reading, and highly recommended to students of Natural History in general, and the Neches River Valley country in particular.

Eagle's Gift, by Carlos Castaneda

Carlos Castaneda takes the reader into the very heart of sorcery, challenging both imagination and reason, shaking the very foundations of our belief in what is "natural" and "logical."

His landscape is full of terrors and mysterious forces, as sharply etched as a flash of lightning on the deserts and mountains where don Juan takes him to pursue the sorcerer’s knowledge—the knowledge that it is the Eagle that gives us, at our births, a spark of awareness, that it expects to reclaim at the end of our lives and which the sorcerer, through his discipline, fights to retain. Castaneda describes how don Juan and his party, left thisworld—"the warriors of don Juan’s party had caught me for an eternal instant, before they vanished into the total light, before the Eagle let them go through"—and how he, himself, upon witnessing such a sight, jumped into the abyss.

Another excellent and fascinating work from Castaneda
By A Customer
What disturbs me about these reviews is that there seem to be two kinds of reviewers: the skeptics, who (mistakenly) call Castaneda a con man, and the believers, who usually can't spell worth a hoot and often have all kinds of wacky comments indicating that they are barely capable of understanding the concepts Castaneda presents. To the skeptics, I wish to say this: I am convinced that Castaneda has accurately described the world as it is today, in a way that our society cannot accept, but which is actually more practical and holistic than our steadfast denial of the existence of "forces which shape and control our lives." There is more to life than we know, and society is responsible for our blindness.
To the true believers and self-styled shamans who love to converse about this stuff as if they were experts, I say: Learn to spell and your credibility will be greatly enhanced.
Thank you for your attention.

The Eagle's gift: the ultimate man's challenge
By A Customer
Carlos Castaneda's "The Eagle's gift" is the best and most important book I have ever read. It makes me sad to read about other people's skepticism which, in my opinion, is dictated solely on the base of prejudice or shallow knowledge on the subject. Those who have met Carlos Castaneda know that there is nothing invented in his books, as strange as it may seem. Unfortunately, when one is confronted with something that does not fit in our dayly reality, we immediately discard it as "fake" or "absurd", so that before giving up to stupidity or bigotry, one should first have a deep knowledge about what he is criticizing. "The Eagle's Gift" opens untapped possibilities for all human beings who have enough courage and are enough open-minded to venture into the magic world that Carlos Castaneda presents us with. This world is a magic realm that we can experience right in our own realities and lives. Finally, because there are no words to express my admiration and gratitude, I will just say that I recommend this book to anyone who wants more from life that just being drift through it.

absurd and not absurd
By JF
of course to any everday rational person, the world of castenda is absurd. how could it be otherwise? nevertheless, read this book with disbelief suspended, and its a great read. for those who have persevered through the previous volumes of carlos' introduction to the ways of 'power', now comes the nub of the argument. the heart of the matter. all that power-plant taking, ally-mongering and what not of the previous volumes is left behind. what was the purpose of don juan's elaborate rituals in the ways of 'power', painstakingly taught to a dense, exasperating carlos? nothing less than a quest for freedom. the practices are not important; what is important is the effect on the practitioner. the world of don juan is entirely re-interpreted for the reader. a completely new framework must be understood. not familiar with the world(s) of don juan and carlos? never mind: this volume, more novel-like and fast moving than the others, reads well as fiction in and of itself, whether or not the reader cares to believe casteneda. comprehending the framework of what casteneda describes is a bonus. casteneda is a quietly skilled writer, who bears re-reading. i recommend reading and understanding all the books in this series, in order. the payoff is for thos who persevere. as for the now eternal question of whether this is true, real, logical, etc., how can the average reader ever know? why worry? as carlos himself was led this way and that by his benefactors, always in a certain direction, tending towards a finer understanding of their realm, so can the reader be led by casteneda.

Danica: Crossing the Line, by Danica Patrick

Sharing secrets and stories, tales from the track, and insights into her personal life, Danica reflects on her extraordinary rise from a ten-year-old go-kart champion to the most successful woman in the history of American racing.

Danica Patrick's life moves at 220 mph. She drives every race and lives every day like she has something to prove—and she does. As a 5-foot 2-inch, 100-pound woman, she had to qualify a little quicker and race a little faster than the boys—just to earn the respect she would otherwise be given if she weren't the "girl on the track, driving the princess mobile." But you don't get to be an IndyCar driver without talent and determination. Danica is living proof that if you work hard and aim high, you can do whatever you set your mind to, that you can rise to any challenge, and that what makes you different is what makes you great.

An inspiration to all, Crossing the Line offers Danica's unique perspective on how to compete in life, how to stand out, and how to get the respect and attention you deserve.

Introduction

Trust thy dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

-- Kahlil Gibran

The dreams were always the same. I was running as fast as I could, trying to escape the wolves that were chasing me. I ran and ran and ran, sweat pouring from my forehead, dripping into my eyes, stinging them as if a thousand bees had attacked me, leaving me blind. And still, I ran. I ran as fast as I could, trying to escape, but then I became stuck, unable to move. My mouth was open, as if I were yelling, but silence emerged. I was unable to scream, to yell for help. I was paralyzed -- filled with fear.

Motegi, Japan, 2005

This was my first time visiting Japan, and I was very excited. It wasn't just the anticipation of the race. It was great seeing Tokyo and the country of Japan. I know that I came to Motegi as a rookie, but this track was different than the others I had run prior to coming here to race. Each end of the track is different; one end is really fast and wide, and the other end is much tighter. I hoped to do well here. My teammates Buddy Rice and Vitor Meira have both raced at Motegi before, so they gave me some tips and advice on what to expect.

Clear skies and bright sunshine greeted the racers and the enthusiastic fans on race day. Motegi is a world-class 1.5-mile oval track. It was a pretty solid opening day for me. It took me some time to get up to speed, but my team made some good changes to my car in each of the two practice sessions, and we were able to work on both the qualifying and race day setups. It was a little hotter than I expected, which meant we had to adjust the car from the initial setup because of the changed conditions. I am getting more used to the faster oval tracks. Every time I race, I learn a little more about driving an IndyCar, and this race would be the biggest lesson so far. There is a wealth of talent and experience in this series, which means there's no room for anyone to view me as a fluke, or just another woman trying to race cars. I was beginning to show the improvement everyone looks for from rookies, and it felt good that other people were starting to see my skill shine through.

After a couple of races of qualifying at the back of the pack, I finally qualified in the top two, losing the much-sought-after and coveted pole position to Sam Hornish by 0.002 of a second. He edged me out after I led the qualifying race for most of the day. This field was as tight and competitive as it has been all season. I was uncertain how qualifying would go. I wasn't sure if I could win the pole, but after the first lap, the car felt good -- really good. After my qualification attempt, I kept looking over my shoulder at the scoring tower to see if anyone had beaten my time. The conditions got a little cooler with the onset of some cloud cover, which worked to Sam's benefit, and I was bumped to "P2" -- second place.

Finally, after three prior races of qualifying slow, I suddenly understood what it felt like to start on the front row of an Indy Racing League (IRL) race. It was awesome. It felt as if a ton of bricks had been lifted from my shoulders. Maybe it was that proverbial "rookie" weight that had been slowing me down up to this race. It didn't matter. I knew I had arrived as a driver, and it felt great. I was nervous. This was the first time I had started in the front, and I knew it was my first real chance of the season to show these boys what I was made of...and it's not sugar and spice. Nope. Not this girl. I was filled with adrenaline and determination, piss and vinegar.

I took the lead right from the start, passing Sam on the outside at turn two. I nearly spun in the middle of the pass. My tires were cold, which means they didn't have much grip on the track. But I managed to make it stick and took the lead. I was in the lead for a while, being chased by the other drivers as if they were those wolves that used to haunt me in my dreams. But this chase was no dream. It was real. It was happening live, in full Technicolor, and at 220 mph. I realized that day I am no longer terrified of being chased. In fact, I love being chased. It meant I was in the lead. I raced in front for most of the day -- and I felt relieved.

Racing experts say that if you have a good race in Motegi, chances are you'll have a good race in Indianapolis. I wasn't sure if that was true or not. All I knew was that I was having the time of my life. But I was disappointed by the outcome. My engineer gave me the direction to change fuel positions, which restricts the amount of fuel going through the engine. If I hadn't conserved my fuel by slowing down, I would never have made it to the finish line. This strategy got me my highest finishing position so far. It was a challenging race because I am learning I can't always drive the car as hard as I would like -- and I like to drive hard. I gained precious experience, which is what a rookie season is all about. It was frustrating, because the car was so good. I started second and finished fourth -- things were looking up.

There was no turning back. I now had the confirmation that I could be a real contender in racing. Other people now knew it too. I showed the doubters I can lead a race, set the pace, and possibly -- no, probably -- find an IRL win. Though nobody ever said it to my face, prior to Motegi I think a lot of people were skeptical of my ability. They thought I was a good publicity tool for the IRL but never gave me the respect or credit I deserved as a driver -- at least not until that day.

The chase was officially "on" after that race. I knew I had a shot at winning the Indy 500, and now so did everyone else.

What's mine is mine and what's your is up for grabs.

-- Anonymous

Roscoe, Illinois, 1992

Most young girls aren't staying up nights dreaming of someday winning the Indy 500, but then again, I wasn't the average ten-year-old. While in some ways I was just like other girls my age, still playing with Barbie dolls and baking cookies with my mom, I also spent most of my childhood watching my dad work on racecars, fascinated by his knowledge of engines and the technical engineering aspects of engines and body frames. I became equally intrigued by the sensation of driving fast -- really fast. I come from a family of adventure seekers. The exhilaration I felt when I stepped on the pedal of my first go-kart was enough to hook me for life. I loved going fast and steering my kart around tight corners and barreling down the straightaways. I felt a freedom unlike anything I had experienced before that day. I got the same feeling as the one I get when I ride a roller coaster. Faster, faster. Woo hoo! At age ten, I had found my life's passion. From that point forward, I had a one-track mind. Instead of playing soccer after school or taking piano lessons, I dedicated myself to becoming the best racecar driver in the world.

Dreams lift us from the commonplace of life to better things.

-- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

In dream interpretation books, being chased by an animal or a shadowy creature usually represents one's passion or natural feelings. So I guess you might say that my childhood dreams were really projecting my future. Literally and figuratively, I now find myself being chased for a living. To be certain, it's far better to be chased than to be the one coming from behind, doing the catching up. My girlhood dreams of becoming a racecar driver are now my reality. I spent so many nights dreaming of what it would be like to win. In my mind I believed I won every race -- and in my dreams I did. It's funny looking back, because in my dreams I often had to convince people that I had really won. I'd ask, "Did you see me? Did you see me win that race?" I always found myself trying to convince everyone in my dreams that I had won -- that I was the winner.

My dreams weren't always about driving, but they were always about racing -- whether I was running on foot in a race or using our driveway as a racetrack. Perhaps those dreams were an early foreshadowing of the years to come -- of people doubting my skill, my drive, and my absolute ambition and determination. Why didn't anybody believe me? Why did they doubt my victorious outcome? Why did I continually have to prove myself?

Of course, I always recognized that these were just dreams -- sometimes even nightmares -- yet they were all vivid figments of my imagination. Or were they?

The truth is...they were more than just figments of my imagination. They became manifestations of my thoughts. There are no coincidences. My dreams projected the story of the following fourteen years of my life, to the present day and, I'm sure, well beyond the writing of this book. I no longer have those bad images, but my days of proving myself as a worthy competitor are far from over.

It takes twenty years to become an overnight success.

-- Eddie Cantor

Phoenix, Arizona, 2006

The year 2005 was the most exciting of my fourteen years of driving. At twenty-three, I became the youngest woman to turn the world of IndyCar racing upside down, bringing the Series into the mainstream for the first time in many years. People often ask if I am surprised by the sudden fame and attention I've received this year? The answer is a simple "no." I'm not surprised at all. In fact, although I realize the amount of attention I've received as a rookie driver is out of balance with the norm, it is the last thing I thought about when it came to my career and my racing. There's a rare type of certainty that's hard to describe unless you possess it yourself. It's a level of self-confidence that straddles the line between secure and arrogant. It's a type of knowing -- of self-belief that is unaffected by what others think or believe. Despite their opinions, it's the comfort to forge your own path. If you have it, you know what I'm talking about. If not, you probably know someone who does. It's that person who walks into a...

Great promise as a driver does not make great reading
By Paul Allaer
Danica Patrick is currently THE star and main attraction on the IRL racing circuit, being a 24 year old, good looking driver who shows great promise and who happens to be female. She is currently in her second season on the IRL, but despite several great finishes (including a rousing 4th place at the Indy 500 as a rookie in 2005), has yet to win in the IRL.

I saw "Crossing the Line" (219 pages) at my local library, and the curiosity factor was such that I simply had to pick it up. Danica tells her life story (such as it is, at age 24) and it's nice but simply does not make for great reading. The more interesting pages are when she explains her decision to do certain picture shoots that show off her femininity, for which she (rightly so) doesn't apologize (drawing the line at requests from Playboy and the like). But she doesn't have a lot of life experiences to share, and how could she, at age 24? This book was released in late April of this year, to coincide with (cash in on?) the build-up for the buzz of this year's Indy 500...

All that said, Danica, after teasing with jumping to the NASCAR circuit for 2007, has signed on with a new IRL team for next year, and whatever (big) money they are paying her, I'm here to tell you that she's underpaid, as she is almost single-handedly is keeping the IRL circuit from falling off the cliff. Danica shows great promise as a drive, and I'll be interested to see if she can fullfill those promises, but "Crossing the Line" is not a great book, and I'm being mild.

Interesting and inspiring :->
By Little Miss Cutey
Danica Patrick is amazing. She took the auto racing world by storm in 2005 in her record setting rookie season. She became the first woman to ever lead a lap at the Indy 500 and her fourth place finish was the highest ever for a female driver at that race. 2005 also saw her named Indy Racing 2005's rookie of the year, she got married and wrote this book too.

She's only 24 years old so it's early to choose to write her biography, but did so because there was a lot of interest in her story and she knows she's overcome a lot of things and achieved so much already, she thought it was time. She's also a role model to younger girls.

This is very interesting (even for someone like me who's not into racing so much). She's made a lot of sacrifices - she left school, left her family and left for England to train. She writes how it's hard to be the only female around for a while because she might be labelled a B whether she opens her mouth or not. It can be challenging.

I think this book will appeal to so many different people - young kids (girls AND boys), sports fans, women (even those not interested in car racing) etc. There is something here for everyone and it's inspiring for younger kids too.

This is a great read.

Dual Identity
By Jay C. Tipnis
Danica Patrick exploded to the forefront of Indy racing last year when she was picked up by Rahal/Letterman racing. She justified her popularity by putting her money where her mouth is and qualifying in the top ten of the 2005 Indy 500, and she further made history by leading the closing laps of the race. Had fuel concerns not been an issue and an untimely slip, she could have very well won the race. This is the highlight of the book for many and though it isn't covered in great detail, it gives us a window into her mindset during the race. So what is covered in the book? Although she is relatively 'new' to the mainstream of racing, she has been around for about 14 years. Her book briefly touches upon her days as a kart racer and in England before moving on to her exploits over here. Although she's only been in one full season of Indy, only her race at Montegi and Indy are covered. Much of the time is spent in providing background on her past. While interesting it does present the duality of her character. She spends a lot of time in the book explaining how she's out to prove a woman can be equal to a man in terms of racing and talent. There's no doubt on that score. However, later on the in the book she discusses how she uses her looks and her marketability to her advantage. They seem to be opposite sides of the same coin. On the one hand she doesn't want to fully embrace her identity as a female racer if it will hold her back but she wants to flaunt it when it does help her. Interesting duality. The book is a quick read and does have some interesting information. Those looking for more details on her actual driving best check elsewhere.

Great Primer. Probably the best place to start...
By cloudius
This book is not as comprehensive as others available, but for me this is one of its strengths. It is a great starting point for both MRI Physics and the anatomy and pathology of body MRI. The physics section at the beginning of the book is readily digestible and works as a nice scaffold on which to build a more detailed understanding later. The color illustrations are not overly detailed but are straightforward and to the point. This and the videos on MRI Made Easy were, for me, the best resources for developing my initial understanding of physics. The language of the book is also straightforward. This is less like the textbook you had to slog through in college, and more like the one you want when you don't have months on end to spend learning a single subject. Actually, all of the chapters can be read during one or two sittings, which makes the material a lot easier to retain. This is similar to the Peds radiology book by Donnelly- it doesn't have all of the esoteric, remote diagnoses that are possible, but it does have all of the high yield, bread and butter diagnoses that you should know. This is the best starting point for Body MRI that I have come across.

Great Book
By Dr.d
Very well written. Great chapter summaries. Physics sections are very well done, with a unique physician oriented approach. One of the better radiology texts available in any modality, and certainly the best resident level book for body MRI.

Persona: A Biography of Yukio Mishima, by Naoki Inose

Yukio Mishima (b. 1925) was a brilliant writer and intellectual whose relentless obsession with beauty, purity, and patriotism ended in his astonishing self-disembowelment and decapitation in downtown Tokyo in 1970. Nominated for the Nobel Prize, Mishima was the best-known novelist of his time (works like Confessions of a Mask and The Temple of the Golden Pavilion are still in print in English), and his legacy—his persona—is still honored and puzzled over.

Who was Yukio Mishima really? This, the first full biography to appear in English in almost forty years, traces Mishima's trajectory from a sickly boy named Kimitake Hiraoka to a hard-bodied student of martial arts. In detail it examines his family life, the wartime years, and his emergence, then fame, as a writer and advocate for traditional values. Revealed here are all the personalities and conflicts and sometimes petty backbiting that shaped the culture of postwar literary Japan.

Working entirely from primary sources and material unavailable to other biographers, author Naoki Inose and translator Hiroaki Sato together have produced a monumental work that covers much new ground in unprecedented depth. Using interviews, social and psychological analysis, and close reading of novels and essays, Persona removes the mask that Mishima so artfully created to disguise his true self.

Naoki Inose, currently vice governor of Tokyo, has also written biographies of writers Kikuchi Kan and Osamu Dazai.

New York–based Hiroaki Sato is an award-winning translator of classical and modern Japanese poetry, and also translated Mishima's novel Silk and Insight.

Review
"Mr. Sato has performed something of a miracle in skillfully and patiently adding layer after layer of information, both about the writer and the social and political context in which he worked, in order to give us not only a comprehensible account of the novelist’s complex personal vicissitudes but what is in effect a trenchant commentary on the history of cultural and political life in postwar Japan. . . . Persona now joins a very small group of studies that succeed in portraying, rather than simply sketching, the life of an iconic figure in modern Japanese culture."—J. Thomas Rimer, Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature, Theatre, and Art at University of Pittsburgh

"This is a whale of a book—both unusually massive and extremely informative and stimulating. . . . Those who are interested in the brilliantly gifted writer of mid-20th century Japan who is its subject will learn much from this volume, and should be stimulated to go back and read, or re-read, what Yukio Mishima has left us."—Paul McCarthy, The Japan Times

"From this biography the reader gains a great sense of the milieu from which Mishima arose, the approaches he took in his cutting-edge writing, and his increased fascination with conservative, hypermasculine Japanese traditions... this is an essential addition to all collections with a strong emphasis on world literature and Japanese history, and for English-reading students of 20th-century Japanese literature."—Library Journal, November 2012

"Naoki Inose's biography is immensely detailed and punctilious and not easy reading for a foreigner not versed in Japanese culture and history... but does show him to have been an extraordinary man, in many respects a sympathetic one, and a writer of extraordinary range... I hope that this biography revives interest in the best of his novels, especially in the tetralogy. "—Wall Street Journal, December 2012

"Personais a book about Japan itself, as filtered through the life of one of its perhaps most important creations.... If Japan truly represents the Occident and the Orient as so many would have us believe, it’s because of icons like the talented, tragic Mishima."—Will Eells, Three Percent

"Mishima's life and his many interests... make for fascinating reading, and Persona is a riveting account."—M.A. Orthofer, The Complete Review

"Persona deftly reveals to us the actual man and writer who willingly traded his life for a legend: Yukio Mishima. Lurching forward vivid drama by drama and then backtracking to provide us with context, the biography opens up a whole epoch of sexual, literary, and artistic creativity, guiding us through the fiction, the friendships, and the passions that ultimately made Mishima Mishima." —poet Forrest Gander, 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist

Daunting but worth the effort
By Ash Brown
My introduction to Japanese literature was through Yukio Mishima's tetralogy The Sea of Fertility. Ever since, I have been fascinated by his life and works. It has been nearly forty years since a major biography on Mishima has been released in English. I was very excited when I learned that Stone Bridge Press would be releasing Persona: A Biography of Yukio Mishima by Naoki Inose and Hiroaki Sato at the end of 2012. The English-language edition is actually an updated and expanded version of Inose's 1995 Japanese Mishima biography Persona: Mishima Yukio den. Sato was primarily responsible for the adaptation, expansion, and translation of the English-language edition of Persona. It is a mighty tome. With over 850 pages, Persona promised to be the most comprehensive and complete biography of Mishima available in English.

Yukio Mishima, the pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka was born on January 14, 1925 to Azusa and Shizue Hiraoka. His upbringing was a bit peculiar--his controlling grandmother snatching him away from his parents. As a child he often struggled with health issues, but exhibited an intellectual precociousness and a talent for writing at a young age. Mishima would eventually become one of the preeminent and most visible authors of his day. He was also an extremely prolific writer, responsible for creating thirty-four novels, more than one hundred seventy short stories, close to seventy plays, six hundred sixty poems, and numerous essays, articles, and other works. Many of Mishima's writings have been translated, but only a fraction of his total output is available in English. He was also involved in the film industry, served as a subject and model for photographers, and was active in martial arts and bodybuilding. Later in life, becoming more politically active, he was a vocal supporter of the Tennō system in Japan. Mishima ended it all in a shocking act of ritual suicide on November 25, 1970.

Persona really is the most comprehensive single-volume work on Mishima currently available in English. However, in part due to its length, it is difficult to recommend the biography as a introductory resource. Before attempting to read Persona, it is useful to have a least some basic understanding of Mishima and Japanese history in general. Persona isn't strictly just a biography of Mishima--it places him within a greater context of economic, bureaucratic, political, literary, and cultural Japanese history. While Mishima always remains an important touchstone, frequently Persona uses him a launching point to address other aspects of Japanese history as a whole. Occasionally the authors seem to wander off on tangents that aren't directly related, but Mishima and his enormous personality are always there in the background even when they're not at the forefront of the work.

Although Persona generally follows a chronological progression, beginning with Mishima's family history and background and ending with his suicide and its aftermath, the biography is organized more by subject and theme. The authors do not limit themselves to adhering to a rigid timeline, which allows them to bring together related material more efficiently. In addition to the main text, Persona also includes notes, an extensive bibliography, and a thorough index. Though its length may be daunting and it's not always a particularly easy read, Persona really is an incredibly complete Mishima biography. Addressing both Mishima's public and private personas, it delves into areas of his personal life (including his sexuality) which I haven't seen as thoroughly explored in English before. While not a biography for the casual reader, reading Persona is well worth the effort for someone with an established interest in Mishima and Japanese history.

A few mistakes, maybe, but magnificent
By Amazon Customer
I agree with Thiessen for the most part. Maybe there are some mistakes here--HITOKIRI is usually translated as MANSLAYER, for instance--but the overall effect is excellent and very detailed. The translation of KARAKKAZE YARO as WINDBLOWN DUDE is the best yet, though I hate the word "dude." There's much new information here and Mishima seems more human than usual--he did get drunk more than once in his life, we learn. People not familiar with Mishima will have trouble with the writing but critics and fans will be mesmerized. It's not easy reading but it's well worthwhile. The lack of any photographs is a drawback--one had hoped to see some new ones--but we can't have everything. Anyway, if you like Mishima you should like this book. In over 800 pages there are bound to be a few mistakes but those are minor quibbles in the overall grandeur of this work. Jerry Piven's The Madness and Perversion of Yukio Mishima is still the best critical psychobiography of Mishima and his works but this new book is a long-awaited treasure.

Fascinating, but let down by unidiomatic English
By Hong Kong Pol
This brief review is based on a partial reading of the text, due to... struggle and boredom....
It contains many details that fascinate, but the sentence structures, and the often literal-feeling translations, make it such an effort to read that all joy in learning or knowledge gained is seriously vitiated.
Compared to the translations of Mishima's own work for Tuttle by Gallagher or Marks, that sparked my love of Mishima's subtle, evocative and directly human explorations of man in society, this is a tremendous, anti-literary let-down.
In addition, the writer seems to feel that listing out everything is sufficient, but there is little in the presentation of facts to layer their relative importance, which is a task all good authors perform on behalf of the reader... Ruskin, George Steiner, Donald Richie, Ruth Benedict, Susan Sontag, &c all managed it.
On balance, I'm pleased to own this book, but what a struggle to read it!
