If any writer can be said to wear the mantle of the late Wallace Stegner, Doig qualifies, as a steady and astute observer of life in our Western states. Infused with his knowledge and appreciation of the Western landscapes, his novels are a finger on the pulse of the people who try to reconcile their love of open spaces with the demands of modern life, particularly the form of "progress" that threatens the environment. In this ingratiating novel, Doig continues the story of the McCaskell family (seen previously in English Creek, Dancing at the Rascal Fair and Ride with Me, Mariah Montana), this time focusing on sisters Lexa and Mariah McCaskell. Lexa's marriage to a forest ranger and her days as cook in Alaska are behind her; now sturdy, capable Lexa runs a catering service in Seattle. She lives with rugged environmental journalist Mitch Rozier, another escapee from rough life in northern Montana. At 50, Mitch is facing a double crisis: the newspaper where his column appears is about to fold, and his foxy, rapacious father, Lyle, a notorious land despoiler, is dying of leukemia and has summoned him back to Twin Sulphur Springs. Lexa goes back to Montana, too, bringing her sexy sister, Mariah, just returned to the States after a year-long photographing expedition around the world. Lyle's illness and death unleash complex memories and future shocks. Tensions between Mitch and his father, between Lexa and Mariah, and between Mitch and Lexa come to a boiling point on Phantom Woman Mountain on the Continental Divide, where Lyle has ordered that his ashes be scattered. While the narrative eventually achieves cohesiveness, initially it is disconcertingly fragmentary, as Doig intercuts contemporary scenes with flashbacks. Among the novel's considerable strengths, however, are Doig's lyrical writing about scenery ("Up here the continent was tipsy with mountains") and local history. He excels in lively dialogue (sometimes a tad too cute), and in grasping the nuances of male-female relationships. Mitch Rozier is an aging baby boomer "half a century old and working for a giveaway newspaper" in Seattle, where he spends his days wondering about the future of his job as an environmental columnist and his disappointing personal life. His children from a previous marriage are strangers, and his relationship with plainspoken caterer Lexa McCaskill, sister of Mariah (from Doig's 1991 Ride with Me, Mariah Montana), is on rocky ground. Summoned home by his ailing father, Mitch travels to small-town Montana, where he is soon joined by Lexa and Mariah. There, Doig returns to more familiar territory as he plots the resolution of a decades-old conflict between father and son against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Doig clearly enjoys poking fun at Seattle's decadent cyberculture, but he is at his best when writing about Montana, contrasting the differences between those who want to exploit the land and those who want to protect it. Highly enjoyable read as with all Doig books

If you have never read a book by Ivan Doig, you're missing a wonderful collection of stories. As with earlier books, Mountain Time is largely set in Montana and Seattle and Doig makes it highly visual with his writing style. The terrain, the climate, the family generations and local customs are all described so well and so subtly that you will not immediately realize that he has transported you there. You will feel the story more than you read it. You will NOT be able to put this book down because you will be so committed to the characters and their search for meaning in life.

Top notch storytelling

It's true this is not Ivan Doig's best work. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to top my favorite, Dancing at the Rascal Fair. Mr. Doig's storytelling is honest and straightforward; his wordsmithing in high form. Some of the reviews indicate trite characterization of western Washington, and an uninvolving story with unsurprising revelations. Not true if you come to this story with different expectations. Life in Washington isn't the point of this story (and what may seem trite seemed all to real to what I've seen here in Seattle. Mr. Doig writes issues many Baby Boomers may be facing or have confronted: a dying parent; coming to gripes with a parent's choices; life changes, in this case, the impact of divorce on self; loss of job. Having experienced aspects of what this story covered, I found the novel a good depiction of these issues and relationships. Yes, it takes a while to get into the story, but once in I found it quite satisfying.

Ivan Doig is an excellent writer and Mountain Time rates as one of his best. He bases his books in Montana and provides outstanding pictures of the people, attitudes, landscape, and scenery of the state. I am a native Montanan and know both Seattle and Montana's Rocky Mountain Front. Both are accurately depicted here. Doig's description of a cafe that is "somewhere between unfinished and deteriorating" would fit any number of cafes in small-town Montana. On a plot level, Mountain Time presents some unique twists and many poignant moments that will keep the reader involved from the beginning to the end. This is not a book where you will guess the ending before you get there.

About the Author
Leonard Parker is a Distinguished Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. In the 1960s, he was the first to use quantum field theory to show that the gravitational field of the expanding universe creates elementary particles from the vacuum.

David J. Toms is a Reader in Mathematical Physics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Newcastle University. His research interests include the formalism of quantum field theory and its applications, and his most recent interests involve the use of quantum field theory methods in low energy quantum gravity.

Comprehensive & comprehensible

Having tried to work through Birrell & Davies a few years ago,
I remember that the text was well written and insightful, but
just seemed too dense on certain subjects, such as the Dirac
equation in curved space.

Knowing that Parker is one of the pioneers in the field, I was
excited when the book was announced. Once I got it in my hands,
I jumped right ahead to the spinor/Dirac equation chapter and
happily found a thorough account of it, with no details omitted.

The text does of course require a background in QFT in flat space and
of classical general relativity, although a brief account of the former
is given in Chapter 1. To me, it's main advantage is the thorough
and detailed presentation of calculations.

If I had to point out a flaw - and this may sound strange -
I would say that the main advantage is also its disadvantage:
you may be lost in all the details and miss the big picture, i.e.
the calculations are clear but sometimes their motivation is not as clear.
However, this does not prevent me from appreciating the
detailed calculations, which is what a beginner needs.

In conclusion, if you need a good pedagogical introduction
to QFT in curved space, the book by Mukhanov is an excellent starter.
If you want a good overall picture of the subject, then the
monograph by Birrel & Davies is a very good resource.
If you want a text that is thorough, pedagogical and detailed,
then I think Parker & Toms will become a new standard reference.

Graduate level, mathematically rigorous

Leonard Parker is a Distinguished Professor of physics and director of the Center for Gravitation and Cosmology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is basically the founder of the study of quantum field theory in curved space-time. His has work formed the basis of research by hundreds of physicists worldwide including being cited by Stephen Hawking in his discover the creation of particles by black holes.

David Toms (Ph.D. University of Toronto) is a member of the faculty in Mathematical Physics at the University of Newcastle. He has published numerous papers in Quantum field theory, General relativity, Quantum gravity, Bose-Einstein condensation, and Statistical mechanics.

This book, positioned at the graduate level requires considerable background in classical general relativity, basic quantum field theory, and the associated mathematics. It is mathematically rigorous and could be used for a one or two semester course or by the individual researcher.

Andrea Dawn Lopez's book explains in easy-to-understand text why human/animal conflicts or situations occur, and what to do to remedy them. Anyone who's ever had an animal visitor in their home will find this book useful. As the title suggests, Andrea explains how to coexist with wildlife in a non-lethal manner. The author's affection for wildlife is evident in her warm, tender writing.

I Loved this book it's finaly nice to have writen material on how to deal and live with our wildlife. I live in the country and some people just dont understand that the animals were here first and it is our job to learn animal safty and respect and also safe ways to deal with the animals. Andrea covers all this in her book and I would like to prsonally Thank her.

For the Love of Animals

How true this writing is. The animals are being forced out of their natural habitat to make room for humans.
I have no doubt that Andrea's experiences go well beyond what she has written about, even as a child. She has made it clear that co-existing is possible without much effort on our part.
BE PREPARED! Where have we all seen those words written before?
Although "common sense" is not all that "common", I think this book makes clear to all of us what we can do to make our lives and the lives of the animals a much safer place.

Ejemplos y situaciones claras son las que tiene este libro fácil de leer. Sobretodo porqué establece como se genera la incompetencia y como desde uno mismo se debe generar el cambio hacia mejores maneras de trabajar o colaborar con otras personas.

Sin duda este libró me clarifico muchas dudas que tenía me mis empresas y que ni en la universidad, ni en el MBA me dijeron NUNCA.

Excelente contenido, muy provocador. Es un baño de realidad que nos hace poner los pies sobre la tierra. Tal vez lo mejor del libro es cuando afirma (con verdad absoluta) que todos somos incompetentes y que el primer paso para mejorar y ayudar a los demás a ser mejores es aceptar esta realidad. Queda claro entonces que los más incompetentes son aquellos que no aceptan que lo son. El no reconocer los propios errores, el no ofrecer disculpas y el castigar a quien se equivoca, son conductas evidentes de un elevado nivel de incompetencia.

Author Andrea De Martino, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that guides expert practitioners in designing advanced technologies and equipment that are used to detect and identify emitter threats.

Martino, begins this book by describing both the symmetric and asymmetric conflict scenario. Next, the author deals with the evolution of the signal emitters and IR/EO sensors, which both constitute threats of the symmetric conflict scenario and also partially of the asymmetric conflict scenarios. Then, she discusses the main challenges of the Passive EW RF Band System (which is called electronic support measure), through a description of the requirements and the increased performances of the novel passive EW equipment architectures (which are based on high speed digital processing solutions, with respect to the recent equipment architectures). In addition, the author deals with the modern RF direction finding and emitter location techniques and technologies, as employed in ESM systems. She also discusses architecture and composition of the different types of ECM equipment, each devoted to one region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Finally, the author covers the ECM techniques that are used against modern communication systems, beginning with digital tactical data links and their relevant ECCM techniques and following with RF-initiated improvised explosive devices.

This most excellent book describes ECM techniques to the extent needed for an understanding of active ECM effectiveness. Luca Amendola is Professor of Physics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He is also an astronomer at the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, Rome, and has authored more than 100 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Shinji Tsujikawa is Associate Professor at Tokyo University of Science in Japan, where he teaches cosmology and relativity. He has published more than 80 papers in international refereed journals and has over 60 collaborators worldwide.

Comprehensive Treatment for Dark Energy

Good book if you are also interested in the mathematical framework and what is the observational evidence for dark energy. Requires a good mathematical and physics background to understand the book right from the start. Well organized and covers topics not included in other sources such as baryonic acoustic oscillations and the LSS evidence in addition to more known supernovae Ia observations and the age of the universe. Graduate student level.

A detailed account from the mathematical physics point of view. The text is thorough in its coverage of the topic. It should be noted it offers no instruction in the high level of maths involved, so one has to familiar with it to start.
The text is sequenced from the foundation of the ideas to their most recent exploration.

First of all, the level of this book is a graduate level and is not for the layperson. It requires advanced mathematics and general relativity background from the get go. As the title of the book says, this reference covers theoretical research and observational data on dark energy. Some of the topics covered: Cosmological constant, quintessence, linear and nonlinear perturbations in dark energy cosmology, WMAP and CMB data and many other recent research on the subject.
An extensive reference list on dark energy is included at the end of the book.
This is a good reference book on the subject.

In 2003 he launched QHoops.net, one of the first dedicated basketball websites in Canada. Daly was also a player at the university, community college, and high school levels. Enjoyable Examination of Canada's Basketball History

Like most Americans, my knowledge of Canadian basketball essentially begins with the Ontario-born James Naismith and ends with Steve Nash. While comprehensive in terms of chronology, the timeline between those figures is murky at best, basically consisting of Rick Fox and when the Grizzlies used to play in Vancouver. Brian Daly does a commendable job at filling these mental gaps in his enlightening and entertaining book Canada's Other Game. Daly is a Canadian sportswriter who has appeared in The Toronto Sun and the Canadian Press and maintains QHoops.net (devoted to Quebecois basketball). In Canada's Other Game he outlines the country's involvement and contributions to the sport from Naismith to the present and highlights the game's deep history with the country and its most important teams and players across all levels and genders. Canada's Other Game is worth a read for any basketball fan or Canadian curious about the country's connection to the sport.

Canada's Other Game begins with the start of the sport itself, as Dr. James Naismith was born in Ontario and raised in the country. Daly chronicles Naismith's life and his efforts to create the sport to appease some of his unruly students at a Massachusetts YMCA. Like the rest of this book, the passage features a good amount of depth and is well-researched, including insights such as how basketball was heavily influenced by Duck on a Rock, a game that featured prominently in Naismith's childhood. Four of Naismith's eighteen original malcontents were from north of the border and they helped spread the sport upon returning to their homeland. Daly proceeds to describe the early history of basketball in Canada and dynasties such as the 1920's women's basketball powerhouse Edmonton Grads as well as the early history of the NBA. The NBA actually grew out of the desire from major arena owners to fill spaces between hockey games held by the recently-created National Hockey League. The ill-fated Toronto Huskies' 1946 contest against the New York Knickerbockers was technically the league's first ever game.

Daly covers all aspects of Canadian basketball, and he also focuses on the country's performance in international competition under the leadership of coaches such as the legendary (in Canadian basketball circles) Jack Donohue. While some of the sections on amateur basketball in the early decades didn't hold my interest all that much, I really enjoyed reading about the various financial hardships perpetually imposed on the national team by stingy sports bureaucrats, an issue which kept Steve Nash from playing for the team for several years in the early 2000s. Daly shares one especially fascinating anecdote about how national coach Donohue had to share a hotel room with referee Ron Foxcroft during a 1973 tournament in Italy. After the two roommates butted heads during a questionably-called game overseen by Foxcroft, Donahue was locked out of his hotel room by the referee and had to sleep in the hall.

The book really starts to shine once Daly reaches more recent decades. He delves into the Canadian college game and how top-level college basketball operates on a far smaller scale than in America, causing many talented players to head south sometimes as early as high school. The chapters describing professional basketball were especially interesting, such as the various and sometimes harebrained efforts to create Canadian leagues and bring semi-pro teams to the country, which generally did not fare well. Daly also covers the country's attempts to lure an NBA team, an athletic asset the country lacked after the Toronto Huskies' quick demise. It was quite a difficult task to land an NBA franchise, and cities had to contend with roadblocks such as Ontario's reluctance to ban basketball betting (a term for obtaining an NBA franchise set by the gambling-averse David Stern).

And of course no book on Canadian basketball would be complete without the obligatory Steve Nash chapter. Daly's profile on the (Johannesburg-born, though he moved to British Columbia as a baby) star and his development from a unheralded Canadian high-schooler to NBA MVP is excellent. As with every subject in the book, Daly covers all the bases on Nash including his remarkable tenure at Santa Clara University. Daly clearly demonstrates a passion for the sport throughout the book and this is made evident through his extensive research and well-written accounts of on-court action.The prose is refreshingly well-crafted and occasionally witty and Daly is a gifted writer despite his excessive usage of "quarterbacking" in describing Nash's basketball exploits. As you would probably expect from a Canadian basketball fan, he ends the book with a rosy outlook on the future of Canadian basketball, which all biases aside seems like a reasonable assumption given the influx of Canadians stars such as Kansas' Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett, the latter being selected first overall in the 2013 NBA draft.

In Sum

Canada's Other Game is a comprehensive history of Canada's involvement with basketball that is a worthwhile read for the curious basketball fan. I lost some interest after the Naismith chapters when Daly recounts tales from some of the very early days and teams of the sport and small Canadian regional rivalries (there were some times such as with the Edmonton Grads section where I wish Daly was less generous with his facts and information) but the book really picked up steam as it approaches the present. As an American a lot of the information was new to me but Daly certainly has mined enough sources and done enough research to please the Canadian hoops fan as well.

A Great Canadian Hit

After reading this book on Canadian sporting history, I can honestly write that it was a page turner. I nearly read it from cover to cover. As a Canadian English and history teacher living abroad, it was difficult for me to follow North American sports, especially before the advent of the Internet. However, now, with this book, not only have I learnt more about Vince Carter, Stephen Nash and modern basketball in Canada and the NBA, but Brian I. Daly's, Canada's Other Game, has provided this reader with insight and in depth coverage of the sport from its humble beginnings. How and why did Dr. James Naismith began the sport? This question, and more, were answered. Successes and failures amateur of amateur semi-pro teams from Winnipeg, Edmonton, Halifax, Toronto, Victoria, Vancouver, Ottawa, and to Montreal, were covered, as well. From the spread of basketball amongst the YMCA and its amateur status, to its relationship and ties to religion in late 1800s, and further coverage included women, Olympic hopefuls, collegiate and pro stars. Not only were teams covered, but people who wheeled and dealed behind the scenes at the collegiate, national and pro ranks were also written about.

Does this book delve into the history of Canadian basketball? Yes, it is a chronicle of the HISTORY OF BASKETBALL IN CANADA. As a Canadian living abroad, in Mongolia, I am going to recommend this book to the international teachers and students at my school, Mongolians, and Koreans, whom I am going to visit this summer. Basketball is Mongolia's second sport, after wrestling. A book this this would also be most welcomed here, as it will be in Canada and all over the world.
