Review
Commencing effectively in 1893 and finally withering away in 2001, the CPL operated for most of a century. It was an exciting and fascinating voyage. The author describes it well. The book is also a useful case study of a business dominated by an inability to adapt to technological and generational change. There’s a lot to be learned from this history.
(Work Boat World)The author is a superb writer, and the story is an engaging one.

Not worth the paper written on.
By blueknight
As a lover of ships/ocean liners and Canadian Pacific in particular, I found this book to be of no use or enjoyment. To his credit, the author does state in the preface that he is no seaman and his passion is aircraft. I found from the onset of reading this book that there were far too many errors and mistakes in reference to ships, dates and events to prove his lack of knowledge on the subject. It should have had a person of shipping interest verify and proofread before publishing. A minor error here or there can be excused, but not contiuous confusion. A couple of examples, like when refering to a great "Empress" liner, like the Empress of Britain of 1931, but it is obvious he is talking about the first Empress of Britain of 1900. The Empress of Canada of the 1920's mistaken for the one of 1961, and so on. Stating that the Vaterland/Leviathan was a holder of the blue ribband (never was) and that the Royal Voyage of 1939 departed from Quebec City...and so on and so on the errors go. If you are looking for a story about the life of some crew members and a general but not too accurate description of the era...you might enjoy this book. If you are a ship lover and want a good book about CP ships..wait until another book comes along.

Stick to what you know
By TomEnroute
The biographical blurb on Peter Pigott, the book's author, describes him as a "well known aviation writer." I hope he does a better job of writing about airplanes as it is pretty obvious that he knows next to nothing about ocean liners and cruise ships. The factual errors are numerous. No, the Empress of Britain of 1931 did not have a sister ship. No, the Empress of Canada of 1928 was not the last CP passenger ship to sail from Montreal as stated in the picture section. No, The Empress of Canada of 1961 did not have 2 stacks. The poor man is confused easily by the reusing of ship's names over time.
I have learned absolutely nothing new about CP liners from reading this book. I felt that I have truly wasted my money in buying it. His research must have been minimal. There is so little detail about the ships themselves, their design, their accomodations, life onboard. Not a single photo of any ship's, old or new, interior space is included, just some oft seen postcard and poster images. Not a single photo of any of the last three (post war) Empresses.
I personally own over 500 books on ocean liners and this is one of the most useless.

A treasure of inaccuracy.
By Vincent R. Pasquantonio
This guy knows nothing about ships, and clearly very little about these ships, and doesn't seem to care about them. A treasure of inaccuracy.
