Substantial Introduction to Balinese Temples

This small and inexpensive book packs with it a tremendous amount of information about Balinese Temples. The author starts by introducing the concept of Hinduism and Buddhism in Bali, as well as religious life in this island east of Java. He then proceeds to discuss general elements of the temples, such as: structures, functions, styles, and types. Along the way, he packs in many examples of those elements (in text and in images), and explains well each new terms that the readers encounter.
The illustrations are well thought of and done. The lay-out of the book assists the readers in navigating through the sea of information. Captions, side-bars and placement of graphics work very well. One thing that is missing from this book is the floor plan(s) of the temples. While this book does not profess to be an in-depth study on architecture, it will be useful to include simple floor-plan(s).
Almost toward the end, the author puts in a chapter on the kingdom of Majapahit of East Java, the influence of which is apparent in Balinese art and architecture. Somehow I wonder if this chapter would be better off placed toward the beginning of the book, since it would better explain the spread of the religion, as well as the style of architecture from Java, Bali's neighboring island.
This book is part of a series in Periplus' "Discover Indonesia." I found especially Interesting Dr. Siegel's impressions of the "giants" who enriched his personal & professional journey through the world of scientific research. very, very helpful

My ER experience has been pretty spotty, and ortho is one of my weakest areas. This book takes you through the very basics ("how to apply a splint") and covers common problems. It makes it clear in every situation what pitfalls lurk and how to avoid them, when to worry or page ortho stat, how soon to follow up and which to admit. I got it in Kindle form and keep It handy in my small ER, both as a reference and as a great way to review the important stuff.

About the Author
J. P. (Hans) Goedbloed is an advisor at the FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics and Professor Emeritus of theoretical plasma physics at Utrecht University. He has been a visiting scientist at laboratories in the Soviet Union, the United States, Brazil and Europe. He has taught at Campinas, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, MIT, K. U. Leuven, and regularly at Amsterdam Free University and Utrecht University. For many years he coordinated a large-scale computational effort with the Dutch Science Organization on Fast Changes in Complex Flows involving scientists of different disciplines.

Rony Keppens is a Professor at the Centre for Plasma-Astrophysics, K. U. Leuven, affiliated with the FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics 'Rijnhuizen', and a Professor at Utrecht University. He headed numerical plasma dynamics teams at Rijnhuizen and Leuven, and is frequently invited to lecture on computational methods in astrophysics. His career started with research posts at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, and the Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics, Freiburg. His expertise ranges from solar physics to high energy astrophysics, includes parallel computing, grid-adaptivity and visualization of large-scale simulations.

Stefaan Poedts is full Professor in the department of mathematics at K. U. Leuven. He graduated in Leuven, was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching, a senior researcher at FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics 'Rijnhuizen', and a research associate at the Centre for Plasma Astrophysics, K. U. Leuven. His research interests include solar astrophysics, space weather, thermonuclear fusion and MHD stability. He teaches both basic math courses and advanced courses on plasma physics of the Sun and numerical simulation, and is currently president of the European Solar Physics Division of the EPS.

The size, organization, and style of writing make it an easy read, and it thus makes the business of 'getting ready for boards' much more manageable. This is a book that is targeted to, and perhaps best meets the needs of, the fellow in training preparing for certification or a physician in practice who would like a 'refresher course' in basic gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. Practical Gastroenterology Overall, I think the book succeeds in a very difficult task. It is thorough and engaging, mostly stimulating and rarely frustrating. It is informative without being overwhelming and that is vital for those locked into a board review schedule. Bottom Line: Buy it for the exam but you will continue to use it. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Mississippi Bar, and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the Mississippi Bar Foundation. He earned a B.A. degree in History and Political Science from the University of Southern Mississippi and his J.D. degree from the University of Mississippi. He holds an LL.M. degree from the University of Virginia. He is the author of numerous books and articles in the area of children and the law.

Old Man

When reading David A Poulsen's latest teen/adult crossover novel, Old Man, the reader first sees the author's note that states, "This book is not for everyone." It is part of Poulsen's warning about the book's realism in dealing with a world 'out there' from a time 'back then'. Old Man is, in fact, a gritty drama about fifteen year-old Nate Huffman preparing for life, the past ten years without his father. We learn in the novel's first lines that Nate "...never call him Dad again."

Poulsen pulls the reader into the life flow seen through Nate's eyes. I was pulled back to that time, being a teen and dammit we did find humour in life which helped with the angst and pain.Poulsen's humour , subtle at times, always sitting on the ledge waiting to leap into Nate's life brings realism to situations, to plans and hopes that are usually more hope than plan. I was drawn into the father son reunion, the cautious steps as they struggle first with who the other is and later with the saddle burr, 'why'. Nate's world is given a reality check in a trip with his father, to see, maybe understand. The horror and fear are real, as through Nate we learn from Nate's father and others in this journey to a place in time where humanity experienced a great loss; 'humanity' itself. There are powerful moments of revelation, of terror without gratuitous violence but with the soul branding fear that was seared into many lives is vividly exposed.

How does the 'trip' change Nate's life? Is there a moment when all is forgiven, past indiscretions appeased? Chapter One's, I will never called him "Dad" bears repeating as it was always in the back of this readers mind. Subtly, as a good book enables, and this is certainly that-the reader is swept up into
the main characters life seen through a teens eyes.

I take polite issue with Poulsen's note that his book is not for everyone; maybe, but it does have something for everyone...Old Man is a very good read.

Old Man a Must-Read

As soon as I first cracked open David A. Poulsen's new book Old Man, I knew I was going to love it. The epigraph reeled me in immediately - he quoted both Neil Young and William Shakespeare - two writers I admire a lot for various reasons. And while the trippy novel falls into the juvenile fiction genre, I feel adults will embrace the story as well.

Poulsen has a knack for creating the best fictional characters - damaged but very likable souls. At first, we meet Nate - a usual screwed up teen, the confusion and angst of adolescence radiating off him. Next, we meet Nate's mother - a typical single mom - she loves her son to bits and yet the frustration and resentment of having to raise a child on her own exudes off her through the snappy dialogue. Finally, we meet Larry - Nate's old man - and he really is his old man - he is 62-years-old and fathered a child at a lot more mature of age than most men. Larry totally screws up Nate's carefully planned summer by showing up on his doorstep and insisting the boy venture off on a trip with him. Nate's resistance is soon challenged by both of his parents insisting that this trip will be good for him and that they both really want him to go on this adventure.

Before long, the two guys are in Vietnam, walking the same footsteps that Larry walked many years before during the Vietnam War. What comes next is not so-much a physical trip but more a spiritual journey where both key characters find themselves dealing with their own personal baggage.

Old Man is the essence of my favourite kind of book: I love road-trip stories (or any kind of `trip story') I also love realistic characters readers can relate to, journeys of personal growth and sharp dialogue blended in with vivid imagery. Big kudos to Poulsen, who somehow manages to completely capture both a frustrated teen and a lost soul of an estranged father. And while Old Man might be labelled as a young adult novel, I strongly feel all ages of readers will thoroughly enjoy this thought-provoking novel.

Libros de Cabecera es de las pocas editoriales en España que está apostando por sacar ebooks para todas las plataformas. Ademas sus libros de empresa son de rabiosa actualidad. Yo compre la novela "arlequin" en formato electrónico y tengo que decir que Chapeau para esta editorial. De este manual me he leido el prologo y el primer capitulo (free sample) y me parece interesante el punto de vista de "fuerza Interior" de las empresas para lograr el éxito.

By bringing a refreshingly relaxed attitude to a well-worn topic, Cohen and Ondra give it friendly appeal. Both are professional designers and private enthusiasts who believe "you don't really know a plant until you've killed it." Readers who follow their ample, practical advice are much more likely to create beautiful gardens than to kill many plants, and even experienced gardeners will pick up some tips. First, the authors "demystify" perennial design, explaining how to approach a project, choose plants, plan the design and add details for extra appeal. They then explain how to "put perennials to work," focusing on specific designs and including handsome color sketches, schematic plans and lush photographs. Each of their designs accomplishes a goal—solving a problem with site conditions (e.g., excessive shade or sun), achieving a desired color effect, maximizing seasonal impact—and comes with a detailed list of recommended plants and alternate selections. Finally, in the "From Theory to Practice" section, they document the two-year histories of a new border, a major expansion and a garden renovation. The conversational text and photographs comparing early plantings with second-year results are great confidence builders for neophytes. Perrennial Gardner's Design Primer

I have over 50 gardening books, but none of them compare to this one for gardening design. It has a wide variety of garden designs with exact directions for placement. The only drawback I see in this book is for southern gardners. I was not familiar w/all of the plants & I suspect most of them are for northern gardens.

Great Design Manual

I have purchased many Garden design books. I want something to just give me an idea and Ill go from there. This book does just that. The color ideas, what to plant with what. Has detailed sketched designs as well as many photographs of actual flower beds.

The quick reference Planning Chart has to be one of my favorite things about the book.
