Raymond Collishaw and the Black Flight, by Roger Gunn

The first comprehensive biography of Canada’s third-highest- scoring ace in the First World War.

Ever wondered what it would be like to fly a biplane or triplane in the First World War? Raymond Collishaw and the Black Flight takes you to the Western Front during the Great War. Experience the risks of combat and the many close calls Collishaw had as a pilot, flight commander, and squadron leader. Understand the courage Collishaw and his fellow flyers faced every day they took to the air in their small, light, and very manoeuvrable craft to face the enemy.

As the third-highest-scoring flying ace among British and colonial pilots in the First World War, scoring 60 victories, Collishaw was only surpassed by Billy Bishop and Edward Mannock. This book traces Collishaw’s life from humble beginnings in Nanaimo, British Columbia, to victories in the skies over France.

No problem with shipping

I ordered this book a couple of months ago and I received it in a matter of days. It's definitely in print and in stock. It's a well written account of a decorated Canadian who served in WWI. Collishaw is not as well known as Billy Bishop, but thanks to Roger Gunn's new book, that should change. A well written, factual account of his life. Anyone interested in Canadian Wartime history, military aviation or WWI would definitely want this book on their shelf.

A very well-researched book
By Magnús Eiðursson
The life of Canadian ace Raymond Collishaw spanned two World Wars of which perhaps his most spectacular adventures took place in the WWI European war theater. Born in British Columbia, Collishaw was in his early teens a junior sailor, onboard the ship Alcedo when it sailed into the Arctic Circle in search of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson expedition. Unfortunately the Alcedo was too late to help Stefansson's Karluk, that had been crushed by ice and some of the crew were already dead by the time they got there. Collishaw applied then for and received the British Polar Ribbon. It was not, as some reports have it, for sailing to Antarctica with Robert Scott. The furthest south the boy got was China. And that's just the beginning of his story.

Then we are in 1915, and Collishaw has joined the Royal Naval Air Service in Ottawa. The story takes us through the battles he fought, the respect he achieved and a little of the history of the world during the dark years of 1914-1917.

The less researched part of Collishaw's life has to do with his exploits during the Russian Civil War, when there was direct involvement from the Allies (United States, Great Britain, France, the Czech Legion, Japan and Canada) in the hope that Russia's former Tzarist "White" Army could defeat the Bolsheviks under Lenin and Trotsky. Thousands of allied troops were dispatched to Siberia, the Baltic and the Cossack territory south of Moscow. With WWI over, Great Britain had fully committed to support the cause of the White Army, sending supplies, troops and guns to the fronts. Perhaps the boldest decision was to commission a RFC (Royal Flying Corps) detachment to Southern Russia, where Collishaw commanded 10 pilots south to Nororossiiski flying Sopwith Camels and DH9 two-seater bombers. The Russian Civil War was a nasty one, with no thought given to the safety of civilians and waged by any means possible. Cavalry charges with Cossaks and Muslims were still held, with Camels flying top cover. In one sortie, 4 Camels caught a large troop of Bolshevik cavalry in the open. Their 8 machine guns cut them down without respite, inflicting 1,600 casualties. The carnage stopped only when the aircraft ran out of bullets.

Roger Gunn's book is well-researched, fluid and entertaining. Collishaw's exploits are balanced and the book covers Collishaw's Golden years flying with the RFC. Some readers can be disappointed as not much is said of Collishaw's WWII adventure, first flying outdated Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters and Vickers Wellesley bombers for RAF, then his operations to destroy the Italian forts in North Africa, flying Vickers Wellington medium bombers and Hurricanes... There's no doubt that Collishaw's finest hour was between 1939-1943, but Gunn's book covers very well only his WWI years when he became a respected ace, giving us too a good picture of how Collinshaw achieved this.

For more personal details, one should get a copy of Collishaw's own account, "Air Command: A Fighter Pilot’s Story", published in 1973, that complements Gunn's very fine book.

Good if you're new to Great War aviation, otherwise lacking
By Michael Mcdaniel
This book was written at a level acceptable for a reader not familiar with First World War aviation, but if you're knowledgable in the area, it will lack the detail you seek. Also, it pays very little attention to Collishaw's powt-war career...including just why a man with his record was retired in the middle of World War II. There's got to be a story there that has not been told.
