Mankind Beyond Earth: The History, Science, and Future of Human Space Exploration, by Claude A. Piantadosi

Seeking to reenergize Americans’ passion for the space program, the value of further exploration of the Moon, and the importance of human beings on the final frontier, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a rich history of American space exploration and its major achievements. He emphasizes the importance of reclaiming national command of our manned program and continuing our unmanned space missions, and he stresses the many adventures that still await us in the unfolding universe. Acknowledging space exploration’s practical and financial obstacles, Piantadosi challenges us to revitalize American leadership in space exploration in order to reap its scientific bounty. Piantadosi explains why space exploration, a captivating story of ambition, invention, and discovery, is also increasingly difficult and why space experts always seem to disagree. He argues that the future of the space program requires merging the practicalities of exploration with the constraints of human biology. Space science deals with the unknown, and the margin (and budget) for error is small. Lethal near-vacuum conditions, deadly cosmic radiation, microgravity, vast distances, and highly scattered resources remain immense physical problems. To forge ahead, America needs to develop affordable space transportation and flexible exploration strategies based in sound science. Piantadosi closes with suggestions for accomplishing these goals, combining his healthy skepticism as a scientist with an unshakable belief in space’s untapped—and wholly worthwhile—potential.

Review

An important book by a visionary with his feet planted on the ground.

(Kirkus Reviews)

Finally, a give-it-to-me-straight account of why space exploration matters. In Mankind Beyond Earth, Claude A. Piantadosi folds together science, politics, and culture to demonstrate why a civilization without a spacefaring future is doomed to extinction.

Review

A whole generation has grown up with tales of the glory of man's excursion into space, and this fact-filled and stimulating book ties the story together and extends it to further exploration of the Moon again and Mars.

(Bruce D. Butler, University of Texas Medical School at Houston)

Mankind Beyond Earth offers a wide-ranging analysis of the challenges facing human space exploration. Using examples from polar expeditions, aviation history, undersea voyages, and space missions, Claude A. Piantadosi shows that exploration is unforgiving to those who fail to plan. Piantadosi details the barriers that must be surmounted for humans to leave Earth for long voyages. He supports his case with information from diverse disciplines, including microbiology, radiation physics, botany, astronomy, and physiology. He also makes a strong argument for the United States to refocus on exploring the Moon and to use Moon exploration both for scientific discovery and as preparation for longer trips to Mars.

(Jay C. Buckey MD, former payload-specialist astronaut, professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth)

Mankind Beyond Earth
By Clare O'Beara
Carl Sagan said that mankind would have to explore space to survive. Yet budget and programme cuts mean NASA has to pay Russia $62.7 million per astronaut they carry to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz vessels. Written from an American point of view, but ultimately the view of humanity's future, this factual book reassesses the benefits and difficulties of space exploration.

Robots are cheaper and easier to send as explorers than to send all the support systems required by fragile humans. Yet manned space missions have given spinoff benefits, such as Teflon, better prosthetics, telemedicine, better preserved foods, better kidney dialysis machines and advances in aviation safety. Space science has given us satellites, so improved communications, forecasting and views of changing climates - and detection of near-flying asteroids. Research will benefit humanity, whether in the field of pure physics or seeing if a biodome can grow enough food to support life on the Moon.

Claude Piantadosi supports returning to the Moon, as a testing ground for the survival systems we will need to explore Mars. He analyses problems at NASA, explaining that when innovators get stifled by red tape and budget cuts they skip off to private industry. We have come an awe-inspiring distance since the start of the twentieth century, when heavier-than-air flight was first achieved by the Wrights. We have landed a robot on Titan, Saturn's largest moon, and Mars Rovers trundle across that planet and send back data.

Biomedicine explores how we can live under stressful conditions, such as a year or more in space. We see comparisons with Tibetan and Andean populations, each of which has found a different physiological adaptation to altitude. Polar explorations and undersea work are all steps along the journey. Space exploration to date is of course reprised, including the tragic accidents and misfires. Living off local and recycled resources is the only way to establish a stable habitat beyond the Moon, as the cost and difficulty of resupply would be prohibitive. The current technology for space travel is explained and combinations can be used, from solar power to nuclear power. Recycling and discovering local water and oxygen are top priority for any new base. Growing food and providing nutrients will be vital, as away from sunlight our vitamin D levels drop, and combined with microgravity our bones become brittle. The author explores the currently understood physiological alterations of space travel on astronauts, from osteoporosis to cancers. Radiation is a major hazard, both solar and background. And what to do with the trash, from human waste to food packaging? Is it ethical to start a waste dump on Mars?

As to where we can go, Venus is unfortunately a hazardously hot environment so Mars is the obvious challenge. We could also visit small bodies such as asteroids - the large Ceres would be a good target - or some moons of large but further planets, such as Titan and Ganymede. As for other stars, we would need fast propulsion to reach those in any reasonable timeframe.

I was astonished that Piantadosi still thinks Mercury is tidally locked to the sun (page 56). Possibly this was just badly phrased? We know now that due to orbital factors we see the same face each time it comes around, but the small planet does rotate and each 'day' on Mercury lasts two of its 'years'. A certain level of astrophysics is required to get the best out of this book, but even looking up the Lagrange points on a site like Wikipedia will give helpful diagrams (there are diagrams in this book too) and astronomers from teens to adults will be fascinated. So many combined sciences are represented that we can see biologists, medics, engineers, chemists and mechanics will all be needed if Earth people are ever to call another planet home. If one section is outside your experience the next section may prove easier to understand. The omission which surprises me most is that of the Three-D Printer, by which an astronaut could insert a diagram for a tool or other item and the printer would build it layer by layer. We are also told nothing about intelligent glass and graphene.

As a lifelong science fiction fan I enjoyed catching up with some of the latest space exploration science in MANKIND BEYOND EARTH.

A brilliant and fascinating science lesson, loosely organized around space exploration
By Aaron C. Brown
I loved this book, but you may not. The author is a scientist of broad interest who tells you much more than you need to know to weigh alternative ideas for exploring outer space. For example, there are four ways to die from lack of oxygen and the book gives concise but thorough descriptions of the physiology of each one. Someday an astronaut may have a heart attack (ischemia) in space, or die from cytotoxic or stagnant hypoxia due to disease or genetic defect. But you'd think a book on space travel would concentrate on not having oxygen because space is a vacuum and other planets don't have oxygen atmospheres and maybe your spaceship or spacesuit sprang a leak or your oxygen recycling system broke down (hypoxic hypoxia, if you’re keeping track). The book has a similarly comprehensive account of how radiation affects tissues instead of describing only the most significant short-term dangers of cosmic rays outside the Van Allen belt.

It’s not just physiology that gets this treatment, the author will launch into general discussions of physics, chemistry, geology, scientific history or anything else that interests him with the least excuse. Ever wondered about how we got those International Geophysical and International Polar years? Or what the “Antarctic stare” is? Then this is the book for you. But if you’re looking for a focused discussion of the technology of space travel, you might get frustrated. Think of a late-night rambling discussion with a very smart guy who has thought a lot about exploration of outer space, who has a strong pedantic streak that is tolerable because he actually knows what he’s talking about and it’s interesting stuff.

Another feature of this book that will not be universally popular but that I liked, is the author has strong opinions and little patience for alternative views. Exploration means sending humans, and the only path worth considering is developing self-sustaining resources and capabilities like permanent low-Earth orbit facilities, a moon base, methodologies for extended living without resupply and mining, processing, reprocessing and disposal technologies to manage physical resources off-Earth. Space should be explored because that’s what humans do, and maybe a little for what we will learn, but it will not be valuable as a permanent place to live. You will learn why the author holds these opinions, but not much about why others may disagree (attractive ideas the author doesn’t wish to discuss are labeled “mind candy” and left at that).

The writing style is clear and vigorous, with a distinctive voice. My only gripe is the author is overfond of silly acronyms and tables that could use better design and any point at all. This is a book that will teach you a lot about a lot of things, and will be a pleasure to read for those who like to learn without worrying about whether there is any use to the learning.

An excellent mix of topics
By LewisC
I am a huge reader of science texts. I've read all the popular books and I like to delve into the less well known. I've honestly never heard of Professor Piantadosi nor have I read his work before.

The author looks at the history of space exploration and the barriers facing us in the future. As he says, space travel is not just about technology, it also about biology. He makes the point more than once that it is also about finances and politics. He starts off showing the passion of the people who made it to the moon and explains the difficulties they faced.

As we go through the book, he explains the importance of sustenance, waste removal, air for breathing, propulsion, distances, the effects of radiation on physiology and technology and so much more. Who will be the people exploring, what will they explore and how will they do it.

Some people may not like his style of writing. Like many scientific texts, it's written in a mostly informal essay style. While everything he says is related, he tends to jump around a bit. In the space of just a few pages, he explains the measurements we'll use in space (not just KM and light-year but AU and parsec), biomedicine, stress and the effects of radiation. Stuck in there is a great discussion of the people who live above 12,000 feet and how they have adapted to that life.

I say same people may not like it, but I found the entire thing to be fascinating. I've never seen some of the concepts explained as well as the author does it. There are a lot of topics I have never seen addressed for the layman.

This book is sort of like National Geographic for the Space Explorer. Maybe even a little popular mechanics thrown in for good measure. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes general space science. Give it a few chapters to decide whether nor not to finish. If you can make it to chapter 3, you'll have a good feel for his writing. I found it to be a bit quirky but, in the end, a great way to approach so many topics. Space travel really is complicated, more so than many people believe.

Introduction to Elementary Particle Physics, by Alessandro Bettini

The Standard Model is the most comprehensive physical theory ever developed. This textbook conveys the basic elements of the Standard Model using elementary concepts, without the theoretical rigor found in most other texts on this subject. It contains examples of basic experiments, allowing readers to see how measurements and theory interplay in the development of physics. The author examines leptons, hadrons and quarks, before presenting the dynamics and the surprising properties of the charges of the different forces. The textbook concludes with a brief discussion on the discoveries of physics beyond the Standard Model, and its connections with cosmology. Quantitative examples are given, and the reader is guided through the necessary calculations. Each chapter ends in the exercises, and solutions to some problems are included in the book. Complete solutions are available to instructors at www.cambridge.org/9781107406094.

Review
"There are many gems within these pages... The author has managed to bring out the importance of experiment in the field, and to explain both the reasoning and the difficulties behind these experiments, but does not get bogged down in minutiae. We are left with an excellent introduction to the thinking behind modern quantum field theory."
Dr. Todd Huffman, Oxford University

"Students who want to study these esoteric matters would be well advised to digest this excellent book first."
Lewis Ryder

"The bottom line, however, is that as a particle physicist I enjoyed Bettini's book three times - not unlike a fine wine: the first time when admiring its contents; the second when reading it; and a third time when teaching from it. Bravo, Sandro!"
James W Rohlf, Boston University for CERN Courier

"He has a talent to render complicated things as simple and clear as possible. His phrasing is very agreeable and effective. ... Bettini provides the reader with a deep insight of the main steps which have brought to the present formulation of the Standard Model, with its essential ingredients, its limits and open questions. His description is fluent and appealing."
Il Nuovo Saggiatore

"... provides (postgraduate and advanced undergraduate) students with an admirably clear account of the Standard Model. ... The prose is consistently fluent and interesting, the author's knowledge up-to-date and detailed and the explanations admirably lucid. ... excellent book ..."

tensors and more tensors
By Andres Betts
Most introductory books in quantum mechanics and particle physics use several mathematical approaches in describing and solving physical problems. Alessandro Bettini is locked in "tenor land" with no alternate description. Other reference books are of limited value, since the Bettini description does not translate well to non-tensor descriptions of particle physics. There are always multiple mathematical means to describe any physical process, but for my taste, the tensor method is limited and more difficult to cross reference with other descriptions.
I had to send the book back. Frank Close and David Griffiths materials are much more readable and easily cross referenced for better understanding of the material.

Textbook errors annoying
By In the name of love
For the most part there are a lot of convenient features when you have a textbook on kindle so I recommend that in general. My problem was with the kindle version of this textbook specifically. There were a few errors, not a lot, but enough to be annoying and get in the way with doing problems. I wish I had just bought the paper version. The errors seemed to occur usually when an equation or special characters were used. Instead of the proper equation, other variables completely unrelated to the section would be inserted. It was very frustrating.

Piece of Crap
By Guy
The problems are very poorly worded and the sections seems scrambled as many problems will relate to chapters ahead of where you are in the book or chapters from much much earlier the book. It fails to execute or reinforce lessons learned within the chapter. One of the worst books I've ever been forced to use by an out of touch professor.

John Wayne's America, by Garry Wills

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lincoln at Gettysburg brings his eloquence, wit, and on-target perceptions of American life and politics to this fascinating, well-drawn protrait of a twentieth-century hero. In this work of great originality—the biography of an idea—Garry Wills shows how John Wayne came to embody Amercian values and influenced our cultoure to a degree unmatched by any other public figure of his time. In Wills's hands, Waynes story is tranformed into a compelling narrative about the intersection of popular entertainment and political realities in mid-twentieth-century America.

King of books on Duke
By Bryan Moore
Anyone even remotely interested in John Wayne, John Ford, Westerns, or pop culture in general might want to add this fine book to their "to read" list. While Wills's book is full of biographical info. and is arranged (more or less) chronologically, it is much more concerned with tracing the formation of a truly larger-than-life public image. One of Wills's purposes is to debunk some of the myths that have clouded the public's view of (the former) Marion Morrison, but he clearly admires Wayne as a unique, commanding presence on the screen. Those who stubbornly refuse to think of Wayne as anything other than a manly, gun-loving superpatriot might want to steer clear. But most thinking people are more likely to be intrigued, even fascinated. The author's reading of Wayne--his life and films (THE BIG TRAIL, STAGECOACH, RED RIVER, and TURE GRIT in particular)--is always on target and lucid. While I don't recall disagreeing with Wills on a single critical point, I occasionally grew tired of his painstaking analysis of John Ford's background and various relationships and how they were inserted into his films. I realize that Ford played a huge role in the mythologizing of John Wayne, but I--again, occasionally--found myself asking whether Wills had lost his focus. Even so, the Ford sections are interesting; for example, I had no idea that he was such a sadist and fabricator. Over the course of the book Wills indicates that Ford was a complicated man, while Wayne was rather simple ("Wayne couldn't even spell [the word] politics," Henry Fonda says in one of the book's quotations). Though not perfect (I'd give it a 4 1/2 if I could), this is a great, fun book on a great (and overdue) subject.

Spotty Trail
By Douglas Doepke
This is a maddening book, so full of promise it never really delivers on. Yet I've read it twice, something I don't usually do. Though some might argue, the subject is an important one: the mythic stature of John Wayne as American hero. Given his unparalleled popularity over the years, Wayne's elevation poses some serious questions. Namely, how did this fame come about, and what does the elevation of a cowboy actor to national icon reveal about ourselves. Understanding this revered status should at least tell us something about the mind-set of American men, if not women (Wayne has never been as popular with the latter as with the former, Wills observes). I think it helps to get at the way Wills presents the Wayne phenomenon to target three levels.
First, there is Wayne the person, the man. Wills doesn't devote much space to this level, though the book's subtitle, i.e. "The Politics of Celebrity", might suggest otherwise. Very little is presented of Wayne's personal life or controversial political stances. Most of what is presented are efforts to either debunk popular fictions from the early years, or to pass along opinions of others, which about the man are usually unflattering, (Ford's disapproval of Wayne's lack of war service). Clearly the author believes Wayne's mythic status comes from the screen and not from the private individual.
The second level is Wayne the actor, the commanding screen presence. Despite many insights along the way, Wills falters badly by spending way too much time on seemingly irrelevant details of John Ford's personality and film style, many of which (the diagrams of seating arrangements in "Stagecoach", for example), shed no light on Wayne the actor. Wills' s preoccupation with Ford to the exclusion of Wayne is a serious defect, which may imply that the author found Ford the more compelling of the two, and could not restrain himself. Yet it is not Ford who is enshrined in the national consciousness, it is Wayne.
The third level is the most important: Wayne the mythic figure, the mirror in which we catch our own reflection. Here Wills both succeeds and fails. He succeeds by linking the Wayne figure with some of our most enduring national myths: unbounded western horizons, uncorrupted primitive, Jeffersonian ideal. But here in the book's last chapter, which should bring together the preceding 300 pages but which is only 12 pages long, there is no real synthesis of what has gone before. There is no effort at showing how, despite the many pages given over to him, Ford' romanticized vision of the Old West shapes the Wayne myth, or how that same vision embodies enduring national myths, or how to a lesser degree Hawk's vision taps into those same legends through the Wayne figure. In short, Wills fails at this crucial third stage to adequately fill in the blanks between Wayne the actor and Wayne the myth.
I get the feeling the author intended a deeper work than is there in the result, but instead got sidetracked on underdeveloped details that end up shedding little light on the Wayne phenomenon. Too bad, because there is an important project still unfulfilled. Certainly Wills has the skills to bring it off. I only wish he had.

Long on movie-making, short on America
By moose/squirrel
Anyone seriously interested in John Wayne's position as America's icon needs to read this book, which is filled with information about the making of his films and the evolution of his career.

But for the rest of us, the book doesn't come into focus until its conclusion, which, while thought-provoking, comes as an anticlimax. Only at the end does Wills discuss the relationship of Wayne's dominant screen persona with America's self-image. Up till then it's mostly movie-making. All of Wayne's key films are discussed, but almost always with the emphasis on who did what and how. Wills approaches the meaning of the individual films with surprising diffidence for a tough-minded political commentator.

Straightforward and fair-minded though it is, "John Wayne's America" doesn't fulfill the promise of its title.

You don't have to be a billionaire or an internationally renowned religious figure to make an impact. This book is an inspiring story of a young man from a small city in India who had a dream to go to Japan, a country whose culture, language, and lores are completely different. It is a story of late 1960's life and in this infernal dream of Japan...and what a lovely moment (which gives a sense of place and of history) when he was told how there were still the view of "Nuclear fall out" and the loss of hair for Japanese men. This young man eventually worked for more than 31 years as a senior manager with General Electric (GE), Medtronic (one of the largest medical device company) and The Stanley Works. During GE tenure, he rose through ranks to join The Japanese Board of Directors for GE Yokogawa Medical Systems (GEYMS), the first Indian to have achieved in 21-year history of this joint venture. By driving CHANGE he achieved the most demanding financial projections, sales, and business targets. His brilliant cultural insights --- the "Indian mind" versus the Japanese mind (even the small thing like realising that Indians are prolific communicators whilst Japanese do not like communicating) gave him understanding the different cultures of companies in GE, Medtronic and Stanley which eventually led to impact for a successful business. This life story of courage, struggles, persistence, leadership and managing the changing paradigm will inspire and touch the raw nerve of my readers that a mediocre college dropout can still influence and change the world around us.

A Great Addition, and a Great Edition
By The Daily Prophet
This Bible is what it says it is. A New Living translation Bible, with notes and encouragement by Joel and Victoria Osteen. It's probably designed for people that attend Lakewood Church, or have a sympathy in that direction. But anyone could buy it and enjoy it.

I watch Joel Osteen and I like his messages. He's not theologically perfect, but nobody is. If you're looking for that, just buy a plain Bible without any extras, and good luck. Personally I like the extras in this Bible. And I wouldn't have a problem giving it or recommending it to any Christian of any denomination. I don't think it would offend anyone and the encouragements are such that, a lot of people now would likely be very blessed by them. People need encouragement.

The print type is 12pt and easy to read, with ample space to annotate. The intros and insets are well done. There are lots of helps, reading plans, prayer sections, etc. but for all of that, it's not a huge, heavy Bible. The people at Free Press did an excellent job with design and I enjoy reading it.

I will say that I'm not a huge fan of New Living Translation, but I've at least 25 bibles that I can cross-compare if I wanted to. And, despite that, I've found that many of the NLT passages spoke to me anew because I was open to hearing them expressed in a new way. After reading it for a month or so, this bible has won me over. I rarely use or refer to the others.

It would be an excellent purchase for long-time Christians, or brand new Christians. Probably not good for anyone that's hyper-sure their theology is perfect and the only way to heaven, or has a problem with non-KJV bibles. For teachable, reachable, curious people who believe Good News is what Christ came to bring, it's an excellent jumping off point for study, devotional reading, and conversation!

If you want to enhance your read, I'd recommend a New Living Translation concordance New Living Translation Complete Concordance.

This Is What We Need
By David J. Spuria
I was introduced to the works of Norman Vincent Peale many years ago. NVP offered many of the same prescriptions back in the WWII era. That was a difficult time for America. And God raised up a man for a time like that. Today, America is again in a difficult period. And God has given us another inspiring preacher who has tapped into our current problems, and given us hope and the power to overcome them. Joel Osteen and wife Victoria have created an amazing resource that addresses every conceivable topic and problem in a way that is fresh and grounded in God's Word. The layout of this Bible is impressive. There are so many helps and annotations that you can't help but be inspired. The choice of the NLT was smart as well. It makes Bible reading easier without dumbing down the language. It also makes studying these concepts much more enjoyable. Osteen's critics like to rail against his preaching style, or the lack of Biblical teaching. I have found no evidence that this is true. Osteen grounds his teaching in the Scriptures. He's the most popular preacher in America, so he's a target. Well, he's the wrong target. God is using Lakewood Church and the Osteens to bless and help many people.

Fire in a Canebrake: The Last Mass Lynching in America, by Laura Wexler

On that July evening in 1946, the leader counted aloud and the mob of white men fired. Seconds later, the leader counted again, "One, two, three," and the mob fired once more. After the third and final volley of gunshots, the white men got into their cars and drove off, leaving the bullet-ridden bodies of two young black men and two young black women lying in the dirt near Moore's Ford Bridge in rural Walton County, Georgia. Since that summer evening, there have never been as many victims lynched in a single day in America.

Now, more than a half century later, Laura Wexler offers the first full account of the Moore's Ford lynching, a murder so brutal it stunned the nation and motivated President Harry Truman to put civil rights at the forefront of his national agenda. With the style of a novelist, the authority of a historian, and the tenacity of a journalist, Wexler recounts the lynching and the resulting four-month FBI investigation. Drawing from interviews, archival sources, and an uncensored FBI report, she takes us deep into the landscape of 1946 Georgia, creating unforgettable portraits of sharecroppers, sheriffs, bootleggers, the victims, and the men who may have killed them.

Fire in a Canebrake pursues the legacy of the Moore's Ford lynching into the present, exploring the conflicting memories of Walton County's black and white citizens and examining the testimony of a white man who claims he was a secret witness to the crime. In 2001, the governor of Georgia issued a new reward for information leading to the arrest of the lynchers. Several suspects named in the FBI's 1946 investigation are still alive, and there is no statute of limitations on the crime of murder.

Fire in a Canebrake -- a phrase local people used to describe the sound of the fatal gunshots -- is a moving and often frightening tale of violence, sex, and lies. It is also a disturbing snapshot of a divided nation on the brink of the civil rights movement and a haunting meditation on race, history, and the struggle for truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Following a spate of excellent books on lynching-Without Sanctuary; At the Hands of Persons Unknown; A Lynching in the Heartland-comes this account of the murder of two black couples in Walton County, Ga., in July 1946. According to journalist Wexler, the murders of Roger and Dorothy Malcolm and George and Mae Dorsey were the last of more than 3,000 mob lynchings of African-Americans in the United States. Following clues from published newspaper reports, FBI and legal records, and interviews conducted in 1997 with the participants who were still alive, Wexler plots a dramatic narrative involving sex, jealousy and violence, with a surprise witness to the murders who surfaces in 1991 (43 years after the killings) claiming to have lived on the run from the Klan because of what he knew. But while Wexler's sense of pacing and denouement is rousing, and her intricate, careful portrayal of the social settings and racial imaginations of the post-WWII South are just as startling. The region was rife with a new sort of racial tension spurred by the demand for basic civil rights (particularly by returning black soldiers) to the point that, under direct orders of President Truman (who was under pressure from the NAACP and the Northern press), the FBI became involved in a lynching for the first time. Smart and highly readable, if much less broad than other recent books, Wexler's account uncovers compelling personal and historic material in equal measure.

From Library Journal
To the numerous books on lynching and the anti-lynching movement in America, Waldrep (history, San Francisco State Univ.) now adds a detailed study of the word lynching and its changing meaning over 200 years of American history. Legend credits Charles Lynch of Virginia as the term's source, based on his suppression of loyalists during the American Revolution through extralegal beatings and killings. The term became common currency during the 19th century to describe the killing by a mob of an accused individual, regardless of race. Though some newspapers condemned the practice, others saw it as a reflection of the popular will and a necessary means of maintaining order in frontier America. Following the Civil War, white Southerners used violence and terror to suppress black freedmen. By the beginning of the 20th century, anti-lynching activists like Ida B. Wells succeeded in defining the term as exclusively white-on-black violence. However, by century's end some critics began referring to the practice of legal lynching through abuse of the criminal justice system, and the existence of hate crimes against other nonwhites and gays suggest possible new ways to expand the definition. Waldrep's widely researched work provides an excellent overview of a horrendous practice in American society. In contrast to Waldrep's broad study, journalist Wexler's book focuses on the last mass lynching in America, when a mob shot two black men and two black women in Walton County, GA, on July 25, 1946. Though the killings became national news, law enforcement officials failed to identify the killers, and no one has yet been legally connected to the lynching. Wexler uses interviews, newspaper accounts, archival materials, and FBI reports to present the crime's background, police investigation, and aftermath. As with Waldrep's book, this reflective study is recommended for all libraries.

From Booklist
A little-known story of a quadruple lynching in Georgia in 1946 of four black sharecroppers--two men, two women--is reexamined here so we don't forget. Drawing on the original uncensored FBI files and numerous interviews with residents of Walton County, where the crime occurred, Wexler conveys a tragic tale of sex, violence, lies, and bootlegging centered in American racial inequality. Although there had been other cases of multiple lynchings, the magnitude of this crime and its occurrence at a time of deep national divisions on race helped to catapult civil rights to the top of the national agenda for President Truman. Wexler excels in her rich capacity to integrate the racial and social nuances in the everyday lives of those involved, exploring the dark underside of miscegenation, extra-marital affairs, and the double standards associated with race and gender. This book is reflective and informative of the racial and moral contradictions that continue to haunt our nation, and raises questions about our national tendency to risk truth as a virtue when race is the issue. A stunning book about race, silence, and storytelling
By A Customer
Laura Wexler's "Fire in a Canebrake" in quite simply the best book, hands-down (fiction or non-fiction) that I've read in a decade. It's a moving, thoroughly researched, brave, and gorgeously written book that, although seemily focused on post-war rural Georgia, takes us into the heart of *today's* American South, where the secrets of the bloody past lie still and hidden in the hearts of living blacks and whites alike. Wexler's account of the lynching of four men and women in the late 40's and the aftermath of that lynching brings to light new and unilluminated facts: that a white so-called witness to the lynching couldn't have seen it at all, that the good people of Monroe, Georgia know a whole lot more than they dare say, and that even the FBI, try as they might to solve the case on a President's orders, commited in their inquiry a fatal and irrevocable sin of omission. A daring, startling piece of research; line-to-line, a stunningly written sequence of entirely footnoted scenes. Here is a new, unafraid voice, Laura Welxer's, and her book is a loud and brave addition to our current literature and knowledge about the way that race keeps us all, in the end, far too quiet.

Moore's Ford Lynching: The Klan Connection
By Samuel Hardman
Laura Wexler's "Fire in a Canebrake" is a highly important work. Carefully researched and masterfully written, it will undoubtedly remain the definitive work on the Moore's Ford lynching for years to come. Wexler's vivid account has all the elements of a great novel. But, alas, this is the true story of four African-American lynching victims, shot dead in the prime of life by a mob of mad men on the Walton County bank of the Apalachee River about nine miles from the town of Monroe, Georgia, during the afternoon of 25 July 1946. Wexler never allows her reader to forget them. After more than fifty years, a veil of lies yet covered the facts of the Moore's Ford lynching and it was yet stuck fast to the face of evil. Those who knew the truth about the lynching would never tell. Nevertheless, Wexler tenaciously picked away the rotting veil of lies. Beneath it, one can now see a mourning veil stained with tears. Wexler did not find a direct link between the Ku Klux Klan and the Moore's Ford lynching; however, FBI documents confirm that Loy Harrison and his lawyer, James Willie Arnold, were working together to impede the FBI's investigation of the Moore's Ford lynching. Both men, Loy Harrison and James Willie Arnold, were in fact active members of the Ku Klux Klan, Klavern No.5 of Athens and Bogart, Georgia, where James Willie Arnold held the high Klan office of Grand Titan. Arnold was a large land owner in Oconee County, as was Loy Harrison, and he lived quite near the Moore's Ford community. As to the important question of the Klan being active in Walton and Oconee counties at the time of the lynching, Stetson Kennedy, alas, not mentioned by Wexler, was present at a meeting of Klavern No.1, 198 1/2 Whitehall Street, Atlanta, Georgia, when the Imperial Wizard reminded those present that it was "the Klan's No.1 political job" to elect Eugene Talmadge Governor of Georgia. The Imperial Wizard then reported "that our goal of an active Klavern in each of Georgia's 159 counties, to ensure a Talmadge victory at the polls, has already been realized!" Hence, there were indeed active Klaverns in Walton and Oconee counties at the time of the Moore's Ford lynching. According to Klan protocol, it would appear highly unlikely that Loy Harrison, or any other member of the Klan, could have been present at the lynching without the approval of Dr. Samuel Green, Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan. Wexler does not forsee any justice in the Moore's Ford lynching case; however, there are different forms and degrees of justice in such cases and, perhaps, the first step on the long road to final justice in this case is her own excellent work. Alas, the children of those who were present and took part in the Moore's Ford lynching must learn to live with the awful facts, just as Roger Malcolm's son, the Rev. Roger Malcolm Hayes, has had to do. And there is Divine Justice: the hateful men who murdered Roger and Dorothy Malcolm and George and Mae Dorsey in cold blood--indeed, all who hate--will never see The Beautiful City of God, which is indeed The Beautiful City of LOVE. Finally, Georgia and Walton County ought to consider the children of the Moore's Ford victims in the same light as the state of Florida did in the Rosewood lynching case. Laura Wexler's "Fire in a Canebrake" is a powerful work. This is not the last we shall hear of Laura Wexler, nor is this the last we shall hear of the Moore's Ford lynching.

No Justice, No Peace.....
By Mocha Girl
The term, "Fire in a Canebrake", is a phrase that Walton County, Georgia residents used to describe the sounds of the fatal gunshots that commenced the last mass lynching in America; it is also the title of Laura Wexler's historical account of the Moore's Ford lynching where four blacks were murdered in late July 1946. The novel painstakingly details the "who, what, when, where and why" of the horrific crime and is supported by interviews, FBI reports, and other detailed documentation.
Wexler takes us back to the beginning when a black man, Roger Malcolm, stabs a white man, Barnett Hester, for allegedly having an affair with his common law wife, Dorothy. As Barnett lingers near death, Roger sits in jail counting his days left on earth. Eleven days later when Barnett recovers, Roger is then set free when his bail is posted by Loy Harrison, a wealthy landowner and landlord to George Dorsey (Dorothy's older brother) and his common law wife, Mae Murray. It is returning home from the jail that Roger, Dorothy, George, and Mae are dragged from Loy's car by an angry mob of white men and are murdered in cold blood. Loy claims he did not and could not recognize any of the attackers which was why his life was spared on that fateful day....and so the lying begins and never seems to end.
For years, the NAACP, FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and local law enforcement conduct their investigations, interrogations, and examinations only to arrive at no convictions. It is only in 1991, when an "eyewitness" steps forward to tell his story that there appears to be a slither of hope for justice. However, hope fades as holes and contradictions run rampant in his testimony as well; and unfortunately by the early 1990's all of the suspected perpetrators and potential corroborating witnesses are deceased. It appears that the leads had literally died out and one wonders if justice will ever be served.
The author does an excellent job of "peeling back the layers" to set the stage for the story and expertly blends in the national and state political agendas that influenced the course of events surrounding the lynching. By doing so, the reader understands the history of the rural Georgian townships where the story plays out, the role of the key witnesses including their family and criminal backgrounds, public displays of bigotry and drunkenness. She also shares the political tactics of the day used to deny blacks of their Civil Rights and protection under Federal law, numerous contradictions in the witness's statements/alibis/affidavits, and lack of follow-up and missed opportunities by law officials. The handling of the case by the investigators from beginning to end is totally unbelievable by today's standards, but what is moreso shocking is the blatant racism, hatred, and wantonness of the townsfolk toward an atrocity such as this.
This reader ran a myriad of emotions while reading the novel -- first, frustration in that no perpetrators were ever brought to justice and nor was anyone ever held accountable for these heinous crimes -- a fact that is unfortunately recurrent in so many lynching cases. Secondly, anger and sadness when reading about the intimidation and threats against local blacks as well as the breakdown and separation of the victim's families in the aftermath of the lynching. The murders only exacerbated their wretched existence as poor, undereducated sharecroppers. The author's skill in conveying their daily living conditions and lifestyle using census statistics and first hand accounts was outstanding and heartbreaking.
This book is a page-turner! Although Oprah, Dateline, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution have covered this story, Wexler adds a twist: her words breathe life into the pages and add color to the black and white photos in the book; she presents the evidence in such a way to allow readers to draw their own conclusions. Hats off to Ms. Wexler for her perseverance and dedication to finding truth. Well done!
