The 1964 launching of Creepy, a black-and-white comics magazine that emulated the classic EC horror comics of the previous decade, was so successful that shortly afterward publisher Jim Warren started a companion publication, Eerie. The two magazines were entirely interchangeable, the only difference being that the imitation of EC’s iconic Crypt-Keeper who introduced the stories was Cousin Eerie rather than Uncle Creepy. Eerie boasted the same top-notch writers and artists. The first five issues, gathered in this volume, feature such stellar talents as Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Gene Colan, and EC veterans Wally Wood, Al Williamson, and Reed Crandall. --Gordon Flagg
About the Author
Reed Crandall (1917 1982, Indiana) is best known for his art for EC and later Warren's horror, crime, war, and adventure comics; he also contributed to Flash Gordon in the 1960s. Some of his more family-friendly work was featured in the Classics Illustrated and Treasure Chest series; he drew the Buster Brown comics for Buster Brown shoe stores for many years. He attended the Cleveland School of Art in Ohio, graduating in 1939, and served briefly in the Air Force during WWII which served him well as one of the primary artists for the aviator-team comic Blackhawk. Crandall was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2009.

Classic Monster Mags
By Kurt Stefan
Dark Horse returns after their first 2 Warren Publishing outings of the Creepy Archives, Vols. 1 & 2, with Eerie Archives, Volume 1. It's every bit as good as the Creepy collections. This one contains the first 5 editions of Eerie. It should be noted that the first Eerie is simply a reprint of three stories that previously appeared in Creepy magazine; one in Creepy No. 7 (Image of Bluebeard), and 2 from Creepy No. 8 (Death Plane and The Invitation). Those who have purchased Creepy Archives vol. 2 may feel a bit cheated, but Dark Horse wanted to be inclusive and I don't mind a bit.
Following the first issue, which has a black and white cover, we get three gorgeous Frazetta covers, most notably the one which graces the cover of the book from Issue 2, and a fourth cover from Gray Morrow that is equally beautiful. As for the stories, they are on par with those from Creepy, which is not surprising as they used many of the same artists and scripters. It's especially fun to read the old advertisements for records, models and masks that are included. If you had those today, they'd be worth a fortune. As a bonus, they've reprinted a six panel comic by Frazetta on quitting smoking, and this was from the mid Sixties!
As I continue to buy back one piece of my childhood at a time, I am grateful to Dark Horse for their faithful reproductions of these magazines to which I had subscriptions in my youth. Can't wait for future volumes and maybe even Vampirella?

EERIE sure is CREEPY
By Mrs B
I bought this book for my husband and all the CREEPY ARCHIVES out so far. He collected them in his younger days and still has some of the original magazines. He said he read there was a rush on the first EERIE and put out quickly to keep a competitor from have a magazine with the name. EERIE has the same artist and writers of CREEPY and the art is just fantastic. The story lines became more advanced through the years. Some of the stories just pull you into them better than watching tv! It was fun watching a man relive his early days and having these magazines in a hard bound book once again. We will buy them as they come out. Collecting them is a lot of fun and the price for them at AMAZON is just right. Great job Dark Horse Comics great job AMAZON.com

Seventies memory lane ... ...
By Jaime B.
Ah, this is the volume I've been waiting for. A real trip down good old seventies memory lane. This volume kicks off with Eerie issue 47, dated March 1973. I was actually nine years old when this issue came out. There was a newstand on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Beach my mom used to buy my dad his cigarettes, and I always came along to buy my normal fare of comics and sneaking a Famous Monsters of Filmland purchase every now and then, and hoping not to get caught. You see, monster mags and horror comics were taboo for me, so I had to sneak getting them. To keep them I dismantled old issues of a kids mag called "Boys Life", tore off the covers and scotch tape them to my monster mags to disguise them.
Getting back to Eerie here, Eerie issue 47 was my first issue of Eerie I ever bought. As a kid I was admittedly a little aroused seeing naked women in a black and white horror comics mag. I was like gee whiz, I can't believe what my eyes were seeing. The Dracula lead in story written by Bill Dubay with art by Tom Sutton was cool, but it was the second story that really grabbed my attention. It was a story called "Lilith" written by Nick Cuti and beautifully drawn by Jaime Brocal. The story is pretty much a origin story of all vampires with Lilith as the mother of all vampires, and how she came to be. As a kid I was amazed at all the nudity depicted in this story. I just had to buy it. Estaban Maroto rounds off the issue with a Dax the Warrior story. Maroto became one of my favorite Warren artists in the following years. And to this day his art work is still fresh and timeless.
With this volume of Eerie, which reprints issues 47 thru 51, you can clearly see the approaching peak of greatness of this series. All the great Spanish artists of this period of Warren's mags are all represented here.
There are beautifully painted covers by Dominguez, Sanjulian, and Enrich. Interiors by Maroto, Salvador, and Brocal. I mean eyedropping beautiful pen and ink art by these guys, which has lost none of their luster.
I think it is a truly wonderful thing Dark Horse is doing here preserving all these great Warren Publications for everyone of sort of all generations to enjoy and rediscover. Well worth the investment.
