Each year, an estimated 2–3 million people visit the trail, and almost two thousand attempt a “thru-hike,” walking the entire distance of the path. For many, the journey transcends a mere walk in the woods and becomes a modern-day pilgrimage.

            In The Spirit of the Appalachian Trail: Community, Environment, and Belief, Susan Power Bratton addresses the spiritual dimensions of hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT). Hikers often comment on how their experience as thru-hikers changes them spiritually forever, but this is the first study to evaluate these religious or quasireligious claims critically. Rather than ask if wilderness and outdoor recreation have benefits for the soul, this volume investigates specifically how long-distance walking might enhance both body and mind.

            Most who are familiar with the AT sense intuitively that a trek along its length kindles spiritual awakening. Using both a quantitative and qualitative approach, this book provides the hard data to support this notion. Bratton bases her work on five sources: an exhaustive survey of long-distance AT hikers, published trail diaries and memoirs, hikers? own logs and postings, her own personal observations from many years on the trail, and conversations with numerous members of the AT community, including the “trail angels,” residents of small towns along the path who attend to hikers? need for food, shelter, or medical attention.

            The abundant photographs reinforce the text and enable visualization of the cultural and natural context. This volume is fully indexed with extensive reference and notes sections and detailed appendixes. Written in an engaging and accessible style, The Spirit of the Appalachian Trail presents a full picture of the spirituality of the AT.

Mike Filey's column "The Way We Were" first appeared in the Toronto Sunday Sun not long after the first edition of the paper hit the newsstands and front porches on September 16, 1973. Since that day more than three decades ago, Mike's column has enjoyed an uninterrupted stretch as one of the paper's most popular features. In 1992 a number of his columns were reprinted in Toronto Sketches: The Way We Were by Dundurn Press. Since then another seven volumes of Toronto Sketches have been published, each of which has attained great success both with Toronto book buyers and with former Torontonians wishing to relive an earlier, gentler time in the city's past.

This ninth volume features a variety of stories, including a look at Toronto's 1904 inferno, the birth of Rex Heslop's Rexdale community, a visit to Sunnyside Amusement Park, and a few fascinating tales about the city's streetcars.

Mike Filey had a column in the Toronto Sun for about 30 years and I read it for many years (I like learning about the history of Toronto) ... this book is a compilation of some of his columns.

In this book, we learn about the plans to connect the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to the city (tunnels, bridge, landfill and even a cable car), Summerhill train station (now a liquor store), subways and streetcars, fires, Maple Leaf Gardens (now a grocery store), gas stations and more.

He also talked about the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health, in our 'hood, which has changed since the book was written. Throughout the years there have been numerous name changes - the Toronto Lunatic Asylum, the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, "999 Queen Street" and the Queen Street Mental Health Centre. The site was a Provincial Psychiatric Hospital operated by the Government of Ontario until 1998 when the Provincial Psychiatric Hospitals began to be transformed into public hospitals. In the last few years, there has been a redevelopment of the site, an integrated and mixed-use urban village.

Even though the book was published in 2006, it was still an interesting book because it dealt with many historical events in Toronto. If you live in Toronto or are from Toronto, you should check it out.

About the Author
Garry Wills is an Emeritus Professor of History at Northwestern University. Born in Atlanta in 1934, he has taught widely throughout the United States. A prolific writer and scholar, Wills is the author of more than twenty books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lincoln at Gettysburg, Papal Sin, and What Jesus Meant. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Lincoln the Radical

Literary prizes are handed out every year, but true worth is manifested by actual readers going out and buying their books year after year. Nearly a decade has passed since Garry Wills won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for "Lincoln at Gettysburg," but the magnitude of his achievement is measured by the continued interest which book lovers have lavished on this thoughtful and debate-stirring work of history. Wills situates the Gettysburg Address in the Greek Revivalism exemplified by Edward Everrett (the forgotten featured speaker at the dedication of the Gettysburg cemetary), as well as in the Transcendentalist movement of Theodore Parker and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He goes on to demonstrate the inherant radicalism of Lincoln's 272 immortal words, imbued as they are with the dangerous notion that all men are created equal. Wills argues convincingly that the Gettysburg address hijacked the narrow readings of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution put forward by the southern rebels; through his words, Lincoln succeeded in placing these founding documents on the side of the angels by insisting that liberty and equality rather than sterile legalisms about states rights were the true basis of the grand experiment of the founders. In so doing, America's greatest President changed the history of the nation forever, influencing politics and policy right down to the present day. Huzzahs to Mr Wills for disinterring the radical hidden within the Great Compromiser!! And thanks to the prize committees for getting it right for a change.

In his book, Lincoln at Gettysburg, Garry Wills sets about debunking the myths, legends, and rumors concerning Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address." Wills seeks to show that because of the Gettysburg Address " . . . the Civil War is what Lincoln wanted it to mean." (pg. 38) Wills helps the reader understand what events, speeches, and speakers had impacted Lincoln in the past, which ultimately influenced Lincoln's selection of words for the speech itself. Wills notes that the speech had influences from such diverse sources as Daniel Webster, Thomas Jefferson, as well as Greek figures such as Pericles. The book also describes the rural cemetery movement that was beginning to rise at the time of the speech, which was influential in the design of the Gettysburg Cemetery. The book also answers many of the critics of Lincoln, who argue the speech and the Emancipation Proclamation were weak, and illustrate Lincoln's propensity of clever evasions and key silences concerning key issues. Willis also notes how the style of the address was the forerunner of a new way of communicating, a way fit for the machine age.
One of the first topics Wills addresses is the myth that the man who spoke before Lincoln, Edward Everett, impositioned the audience with a two-hour long speech that bored the listeners. Wills notes long speeches were common, and expected for the day. He gives reference to the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, which illustrate that Lincoln himself was capable and comfortable speaking at length before groups of people. Willis also emphasizes that Everett was the invited speaker for the dedication, and Lincoln had been asked simply to give some remarks. Wills also demystifies the story that Lincoln wrote the address on a napkin, or while sitting on the stand during Everett's speech. Wills notes Lincoln composed he speeches thoughtfully, to simply jot one down quickly would be out of character. (pg. 28)
Wills notes the Greek revival that was occurring in America at this time, and the influence it had on Everett and Lincoln. Everett had been a leading proponent of the Greek Style, influencing many through his speeches, as well as the time he spent teaching at Harvard. Wills notes Everett had inspired many of the Transcendentalists, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson stated that the Gettysburg Address would not " . . . easily be surpassed by words on nay recorded occasion." (pg. 47) Wills notes that Everett could be given credit, as much as anyone else, in creating the conditions for Lincoln's address, and his classicism was as much a forerunner to Lincoln as his foil. (pg. 47)
Understanding exactly what Lincoln meant in the speech is one of Wills' primary goals. To help the reader understand, Wills dissects many of the passages from the address, and then gives the reader insight into Lincoln's personality. One of the key phrases of the speech concerns the fathers of the country. Wills notes that Lincoln never seems to have been interested in George Washington. To Lincoln, the founding fathers were those who were the authors of the Declaration of Independence, particularly Thomas Jefferson, whom Lincoln considered the most distinguished politician in America's history.
Wills shows how Lincoln used the Gettysburg Address to refresh the memories of Americans the ideals the founding fathers placed in the Declaration of Independence, and the self-evident truth that `all men are created equal.' Wills notes how Lincoln's earlier speeches illustrate his ideas on slavery, which was the complete opposite of equality. Lincoln also used the Declaration to stress that the nation was founded in unity, and should stay unified. Wills states, "For him, the fathers are always the begetters of the national idea. The founders of the nation founded it on that." (pg. 86) Wills also notes how Lincoln and Daniel Webster felt the Declaration of Independence was closer to being the founding document of the United States than was the Constitution. (pg. 130) The ideals stated in the Declaration were more pure than the Constitution, which was based on compromises. Wills adds excerpts from Lincoln's speeches, which illustrate how the Constitution was to make a more `perfect union,' but not define the union itself.
To most Americans, the consensus opinion of the Gettysburg Address is to place it among the greatest speeches ever given, if not the greatest. Wills shows how Lincoln derived much of the address from his accumulated experiences. Some historians, particularly Richard Hofstadter, see the address as another instance where Lincoln avoided the issues and sought to placate the nation with weak rhetoric. Hofstadter does not criticize the address in the book, however it is noted that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation issued earlier that year was completely neglected in the address. Hofstadter says the Emancipation Proclamation " . . . had all the moral grandeur of a bill of lading. It contained no indictment of slavery, but simply based emancipation on `military necessity'. " (pg. 137)
Hofstadter further accuses Lincoln of being of two minds, which changed depending on the demographic of his audience. Hofstadter illustrates this by contrasting Lincoln's speeches he gave in Southern Illinois, versus speeches he gave in Northern Illinois. Hofstadter said Lincoln possibly believed whatever he uttered at the time he delivered it. He states, " Possibly his mind too was a house divided against itself." (pg. 92) Wills contends Hofstadter is pursuing false issues regarding Lincoln's speeches. Wills argues that it was not a matter of his position on the issues, but rather Lincoln chose when to "tickle the racism of his audience" (pg. 93)
One of the more interesting issues Wills concentrates on is the style of the address itself. Lincoln was noted to prefer succinctness and brevity to long overdrawn prose. Wills illustrates this in Lincoln's dispatches with General Grant. Grant was known for his dispatches that related the facts in the fewest words possible. Lincoln learned to be brief as well because of his telegraphs to Grant and other generals. Lincoln developed a reluctance to waste words and omitting coupling words. Lincoln also arranged the address so key words were repeated, so that each paragraph was bound to the preceding and following paragraphs. Wills states, "He was a Transcendentalist without the fuzziness. He spoke a modern language because he was dealing with a scientific age for which abstract words are appropriate." (pg. 174) Wills believes Lincoln was not addressing an agrarian future, but a mechanical future, in which economical speech that meshed like the gears of a machine was needed.
Willis tackles a subject that many Americans learned at an early age, but likely never thought about the deep meanings behind the short speech. Wills includes criticism of recent leaders and politicians such as Ronald Reagan, Robert Bork, and Ed Meese. Whatever his opinions regarding these men and their ideas, it seemed out of place with the rest of the book, and unfortunately dates what could be a timeless analysis of the Gettysburg Address. Despite the minor flaws, the book offers great insight and reflection upon an event in history that to many has lost its significance.

Indispensable, superbly written Lincoln scholarship.

This Garry Wills masterpiece is a suitable work of scholarship for America's greatest speech. He breaks down the Gettysburg Address line by line, thought by thought, not in linear fashion but according to five separate themes. He marks a place for Lincoln's speech in the tradition of funeral oratory, lays bare the antecedents in Greek rhetoric, and illustrates how the pitch-perfect brevity of the address marked a fundamental shift in American public speaking. Most crucially, Wills makes a thoroughly cogent case for Lincoln as the second Jefferson, responsible for the modern acknowledgement that the Declaration of Independence, with its claim (a claim its author didn't even believe) that all men are created equal, is the true founding document of the United States, rather than the Constitution (which in legal fact is the founding document), which shamefully kept silent on the fate of the "peculiar institution" that led to civil war. Wills's book is staggeringly erudite; he dazzles even when he leaves the poor reader's understanding far behind. The information he includes on historical context is compelling and will be new to even committed Civil War buffs. The book should be required reading in any course on American history or rhetoric and public speaking. Five stars aren't enough.

Good Book, Typical Kindle Limitations/Quality

GOOD: Good book for those who want more information on Alzheimer's disease. The book is reasonably current in its content as of 2011. Good ideas about strategies to help prevent or delay the disease's onset. No quick fixes, but good suggestions on how to improve diet, memory exerciese, etc. Worth reading.

ISSUES: The book has several "tests" which require that you have a computer and internet access to download and print. The Kindle edition doesn't do a good job with viewing these forms which are necessary to get all the potential value of the book. If you're looking for a good reference book, it's probably best to purchase the book in it's hard form. The current cost is about the same as the Kindle edition and then you'll have a reference you can go back to easily.

Important book on essential topic

My grandmother had Alzheimer's and sadly my father is now suffering from dementia (Alzheimer's?). Anyone who has been exposed in an intimate way to this tragic disease has a serious motivation to avoid it themselves-if possible. Thus my interest in The Alzheimer's Prevention Program.

I'm pleased to say it is a good one. Many books can give you basic information, but Small and Vorgan do more. In addition to doing a fine job organizing and clearly presenting the latest research on what you can do to prevent Alzheimer's, the book is also surprisingly engaging. Typically I read how-to books with the goal of getting through them as quickly as possible. I initially approached The Alzheimer's Prevention Program that way; that is, to read soley for information, skimming sections that I could get quickly, but I kept finding myself reading every word.

It's hard to put your finger on why it draws you in more than most informational books, but it does. So a good book on an important topic. My only concern (no doubt because I edited a book about it) is while Dr. Small, rightly discusses the benefits of exercies, he doesn't mention what to do if you're injured or ill and stuck in bed. For that, I recommend Get Fit in Bed: Tone Your Body & Calm Your Mind from the Comfort of Your Bed., written by a nurse and chiropractor, it offers a gentle but thorough exercise program for anyone confined to bed.

Enjoyable and informative overall

I would recommend this book as it was an easy read and gives good practical advice. I have read several books (I now own about ten!) on the topic since my husband was diagnosed with "early" Alzheimer's. I was expecting though a little more "actionable" advice on things that can be done, and more in-depth recommendations. That being said, I definitely learned some valuable tips to share with my family and would still say this is in the top 3 of these books that I have read (the other two being the new 5th edition of the 36 hour day, perfect for caregiving The 36-Hour Day, fifth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementias, and Memory Loss (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book), and the new 2012 edition of Alzheimer's Treatment and Prevention, Alzheimer's Treatment Alzheimer's Prevention: A Patient and Family Guide, 2012 Edition which is the go-to guide for the latest treatments, and was more comprehensive for things like the 9-week Alzheimers diet plan outlined for both treatment and prevention, as well as drug and non-drug approaches).

Don't Miss A Finney Book!

Jack Finney is probably best known for his story "The Body Snatchers" which was made into a movie and for his time travel adventure "Time And Again" which acquired a cult following. But, as we can see in "Three By Finney" it is his unique imagination that gives all of his stories a glow and a charm all their own. Proof of his gift is that his books have become movies. One of the three stories in this book, "Marion's Wall" was made into a movie called "Roxie" that starred actress Glenn Close in the title role. Roxie ("Marion" in the book) is a flapper whose movie career (in the early days of Hollywood) was aborted by a car accident. Roxie returns as a ghost to take up where she left off and causes all kinds of fun and confusion. A second story is about time-travel again; "The Woodrow Wilson Dime" is a tale of a man venturing back and forth in time and you'll love the varying versions of his life that are caused by his travels in time. The last of the three stories is a fanciful account of the adventures of two married couples who take to the streets of San Francisco at night to do all kinds of mischief. This story is so bizarre, funny, and wild that only Finney could have thought of it. Amazon lists a number of books by Jack Finney and every one of them is a good read; naturally some are better than others. When you are a person who reads a lot, as I am, and you find an author as gifted and interesting as Finney, you get the feeling a prospector must have when he discovers a big pocket of gold. Some authors - like the two people who wrote (separately) "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Sand Pebbles" - only wrote one book. While you love those books, you are forever disappointed that the authors never wrote more. But an author like Finney, who left us with a number of well-written, imaginative stories, is a mother-lode for those new readers who have not yet discovered him.

A sweet, funny fantasy.

I've only read the first of the three stories -- THE WOODROW WILSON DIME -- but I loved it. Certainly if you liked TIME AND AGAIN, you'll love this. A loser discovers an alternate reality where all his dreams have come true. Like an old TWILIGHT ZONE episode, it takes one fantasy element and runs with it. Very funny; very sweet. A real bit of wish fulfillment.

inconsistent quality

I've read several other Jack Finney novels. I think he has a wonderful imagination and terrific style, and I particularly like his dialogue -- witty and natural-sounding.
I thought these three stories were of mixed quality: The Woodrow Wilson Dime and Marion's Wall were excellent. The Woodrow Wilson dime is particularly good, examining the many outcomes possible from simple actions. But I thought Finney was slightly less successful with The Night People. His characters were likeable, but ultimately their actions were not believable.
That said, though, I would re-emphasize that Finney is a fine writer, and even the weakest novel here is better than many other novelists' work. And the two stronger novels are highly entertaining. And what a bargain -- three Finney works in one volume!

Kevin Kerney's has new promotion but still fights crime

"Serpent Gate", is the third Kevin Kerney novel in series coming from author Michael McGarrity. Written in 1998, story picks up from a now retired Kerney who is recovering from a badly damaged knee thanks to his last case. However, his best friend Andy Bacca who is the new Chief of New Mexico's State Police, needs an tough investigator for his first criminal investigation. Someone has cleaned out the Governor of New Mexico's office of art work worth millions. Bacca appoints Kerney as Depty Chief and gives him total control of the investigation. Kerney's appointment as deputy chief really angers the senior officers from the State Police. Deputy Chief is a promotion several notches higher than Kerney's previous rank before forced retirement. Kerney grapples with some very interesting characters. First is Robert Cordova, an escaped mental patient with the likely key to a police officer's murder. Cordova really puts on a show and makes his disdain for cops beyond obvious. Bacca has also insisted that Kerney work with Sergeant Gilbert Martinez as "partners". Martinez very weary of Kerney, unsure about the new politics created within the state police. Kerney also battles familiar foe, Mexican drug and criminal kingpin Enrique DeLeon, and his trusty assassin Carlos Ruiz. Complete with a wild shoot out in a blinding snow storm this story blazes. Author McGarrity's Kevin Kerney character is a throw back to another time. Kerney is similar to some of the cops who came from the old west. Kerney goes by his own rules some times but is always aware of the big picture. I really enjoyed the amazing characters in this book. Michael McGarrity never fails to become a solid story teller. Incredibly difficult to put down, this one seemed to fly by at the speed of light. I was actually bummed when it ended. I'm going to have to find the next Kerney book from author McGarrity. This series is excellent for those who love a good action suspense thriller. I'd highly recommend "Serpent Gate", to anyone who hasn't read Michael McGarrity yet. They are marvelous to get lost into. Don't miss out.

Heading downhill

This is the third book in this series that I have read and it was the most disappointing. In #1 and #2, the author some care in geographically describing the parts of New Mexico in which the book was set. In this, the 3rd in the series, he grumbled a great deal about Santa Fe but left you thirsting for more about the rest of the settings. Again the plot is twisted, complicated and improbable. Finally, the author seems obsessed with "bad cops" and seems to throw them into the script just so Kearny can thwart them.

About the Author

Jose E. Alvarez is the Herbert and Rose Rubin Professor of International Law at New York University Law School. At NYU he teaches courses on international law, foreign investment, and international organizations. He is also serving as special adviser to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on a pro bono basis. Professor Alvarez was formerly the Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy and the executive director of the Center on Global Legal Problems at Columbia Law School, a professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School, an associate professor at the George Washington University's National Law Center, and an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law Center. Prior to entering academia in 1989, Professor Alvarez was an attorney adviser with the Office of the Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State where he worked on cases before the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, served on the negotiation teams for bilateral investment treaties and the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, and was legal adviser to the administration of justice program in Latin America coordinated by the Agency of International Development. Professor Alvarez has also been in private practice and was a judicial clerk to the late Hon. Thomas Gibbs Gee of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He served as President of the American Society of International Law from 2006-08. His recently concluded set of lectures at The Hague Academy of International Law, concerning the public international law governing international investment, are expected to be published in book form in late 2010. Prof. Alvarez's book, International Organizations as Law-Makers, was published in paperback in 2006. He was educated at Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and Oxford University.

Karl P. Sauvant is Resident Senior Fellow and Founding Executive Director of the Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment, Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School, and Guest Professor at Nankai University, China.

Until July 2005, he was Director of UNCTAD's Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development (DITE), the focal point in the UN system for matters related to foreign direct investment (FDI) and technology, as well as a major interface with the private sector. While at the UN, he created (in 1991) the prestigious annual United Nations publication the World Investment Report, of which he was the lead author until 2005, and (in 1992) the journal Transnational Corporations, serving as its editor. He provided intellectual leadership and guidance to a series of 25 monographs on key issues related to international investment agreements (which were published in 2004/05 in three volumes), and he edited (together with John Dunning) a 20-volume Library on Transnational Corporations (published by Routledge).

Dr. Sauvant joined the United Nations in 1973 and, as of 1975, has focused his work on matters related to FDI. Since 1988, he was responsible for the Organization's policy analysis work on FDI. In 2001, he became Director of DITE. His responsibilities included managing the Division; promoting international consensus-building in the areas of FDI, technology and enterprise development; providing intellectual leadership for policy-oriented research; and conceptualizing and supervising technical assistance activities in this field.

Apart from his work for the United Nations, he has published extensively on issues related to economic development, FDI and services. His name is associated with some 150 United Nations publications on FDI over the past three decades.

Dr. Sauvant received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a national of Germany.
