This is simply a fascinating collection of the words of many recognized masters of physics on the topic of the science of physics and how it relates (or doesn't) to religion and spirituality. There is a short introduction by Ken Wilber. If you value such information, here's your book.
I wrote this review because the book is worth 5 stars. The one person who criticized the book, and brought the rating down to 4 stars, seemed to be talking about some other book. The review made no sense. My take is that it was a rant against a perception rather than an experience of the book. There is nothing New Age about this book. And this is much less a book about Ken Wilber's views (which are not New Age anyway) and much more a book about the views of Eddington, Pauli, Planck, Jeans, etc. If you're curious about the spiritual views of these men, here's your opportunity. Enjoy!!!

The Greatest Physicists were Mystics, Militant Atheists Beware

American philosopher Ken Wilber has done a great service by bringing together in a single volume excerpts from the mystical writings of the world's greatest physicists. Six of the eight men included were Nobel laureates including Einstein, Heisenberg, Schroedinger, Plank, de Broglie, and Pauli.

These are the intellectual giants who gave us the twin pillars of modern physics, relativity theory and quantum mechanics, upon which all of contemporary science rests. Given the popular view that they must have been atheists it is astonishing to learn that all of them were quite explicit in expressing the need for a mystical outlook extending beyond the physical world.

Let's be clear. Wilber as editor has not pulled a few paragraphs out of context. Erwin Schroedinger for example writes of "the mystic vision", De Broglie writes that "the mechanism demands a mysticism", and Wolfgang Pauli speaks of "embracing the rational and the mystical."

None of these men were particularly 'religious' however. The popular religions of today (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc.), may be viewed as specific theories of Ultimate Reality (this reviewer's characterization). They all make specific statements - some empirically testable, many others not - about people and events in the physical world and how these related to God, or Allah, or All That Is, or some similar term.

Mysticism on the other hand is not a religion but a path to understanding. It has nothing to do with religious creeds or doctrines, or whether or not there is a personal God, and certainly nothing to do with science which is something else entirely. Mystics simply believe on the basis of personal experience that there is likely to exist another level or levels of consciousness beyond that of the five senses. Through rigorous mental practice they believe that it is possible to access wisdom and insight from that level which represents the highest or ultimate reality.

Individual mystics may personally identify with one religion or another but the practice of mysticism as a path is found in all the major religions and is, in and of itself, areligious. This point is unfortunately muddied in Wilber's otherwise quite interesting introduction where he equates religion with spirituality (p.18), something most thoughtful people would probably strongly reject. One can be deeply spiritual without committing to any specific set of religious doctrines.

Finally, I feel compelled comment on Wilber's assertion that the physicists would reject so called New Age books like "The Tao of Physics" and "The Dancing Wu Li Masters". The key argument of such books is less that physics "proves" Taoism or Buddhism or some other form of Eastern esoteric thought but rather that seemingly bizarre and unbelievable statements about the nature of space and time and reality made by practitioners of these traditions appear to be supported by the findings of modern physics. (Cf. for example G. Zukav, "Wu Li Masters", p. 256 and especially p. 331).

For the last hundred years or so science and religion have declared a truce in their war for the allegiance of the mind of Man. Science would to stick to matters of the physical world while religion would stick to matters of the world beyond the senses. However as much as both sides, including Ken Wilber, would like to keep it that way, the march of scientific knowledge takes us ever forward toward a world view that challenges our most basic assumptions about the nature of human reality.

I am speaking here specifically of entanglement, the now widely accepted principle in physics that particles really do influence each other without regard to distance or time, that is, they interact instantaneously even if they are separated by billions of light years. This was scientifically demonstrated in 1982, the year before Quantum Questions was originally released, and has been confirmed repeatedly since then. Even more disconcerting are recent experiments which seem to imply that actions in the present (as we perceive it) can actually alter events that have already been recorded in the past. (Cf. Amir D. Aczel, "Entanglement: The Greatest Mystery in Physics", 2003).

However troubling such findings may be to our everyday conception of 'reality', they merely confirm Max Plank's famous statement that "those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum theory cannot possibly have understood it."

The shocks keep coming and they are getting stronger whether we like it or not. Will they lead to a total paradigm shift in our conception of reality?

The deeper significance of this book is that it shows all scientists and those who someday will be scientists that being a mystic is okay. Want to argue with Heisenberg and Plank and Einstein and Schroedinger and....?

About the Author
Thomas W. Baumgarte is a Professor of Physics at Bowdoin College, and an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his Diploma (1993) and Doctorate (1995) from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München, and held postdoctoral positions at Cornell University and the University of Illinois before joining the faculty at Bowdoin College. He is a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He has written over 65 research articles on a variety of topics in general relativity and relativistic astrophysics, including black holes and neutron stars, gravitational collapse, and more formal mathematical issues.

Stuart L. Shapiro is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his A.B. from Harvard (1969) and his Ph.D. from Princeton (1973). He has published over 335 research articles spanning many topics in general relativity and theoretical astrophysics and co-authored the widely used textbook Black Holes, White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars; The Physics of Compact Objects (John Wiley, 1983). In addition to numerical relativity, Shapiro has worked on the physics and astrophysics of black holes and neutron stars, relativistic hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics and stellar dynamics, and the generation of gravitational waves. He is a recipient of an IBM Supercomputing Award, a Forefronts of Large-Scale Computation Award, an Alfred P. Snow Research Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and several teaching citations. He has served on the editorial boards of The Astrophysical Journal Letters and Classical and Quantum Gravity. He was elected Fellow of both the American Physical Society and Institute of Physics (UK).

Best introduction to ADM formalism

There are two aspects to this book, at least how I refer to it: an introduction to the ADM formalism, and numerical analysis of black hole physics.

As an introduction to the ADM formalism, it stands alone. Chapter 2 "The 3+1 decomposition of Einstein's equations" provides a very pedagogical introduction ranging from "How to foliate spacetime" to performing calculations. Maxwell's equations in 3+1 dimensions are used as a motivation. Then the notion of the Hamiltonian constraint and momentum constraints are introduced, with some intuition given.

Chapter 3 "Constructing Initial Data" discusses the York time-slicing (a.k.a. conformal transformations of the spatial metric) and how that affects the constraints --- the momentum constraint becomes messy, the Hamiltonian constraint becomes pretty. Mass, momentum, and angular momentum is discussed in light of the problems of coordinate independence.

I frequently refer this book to my friends who need to learn the ADM formalism, it is the best introduction to the subject. The numerical analysis is equally as delightful.

Beware, though, of minor typos (e.g. page 23, "The 3+1 decompostion[sic] of..."). The math appears to be correct, the reasoning justified. Just sparse spelling errors.

Environment, history, land use and current economic trends.

I decided to read this book because of my interest in environmental history, and land use is obviously related. I had read a bit about Mongolia, but knew about it mostly as a sort of homeland that saw formidable tribes of horsemen erupt out every few centuries. This book offers a corrective. Mongolia is a place where people live, in a most harsh climates, and their use of land has taken that into account. The most basic fact is that the current situation of about three million people in about one million mostly harsh square miles (with a million in the capital!) dictates a rural economy based on herding. Endicott offers a good historical overview.

And as she describes it, things are about to change. Mongolia has substantial mineral resources, including gold and especially coal. The Chinese are interested, so the economy is increasingly based on exporting raw materials. The nation is between China and Russia, both intimate in Mongolian history, first as conquests and later as outside forces intervening in the country.

Endicott's book is extremely informative for such a short book. The focus really is on land use.

Biografía del autor

Maurice Druon (1918-2009) nació en París, hijo natural del actor ruso Lazare Kessel de la Comédie Française, quien se suicidó antes de reconocerlo. Estudió Letras y Ciencias Políticas y su temprano interés por la literatura le llevó a colaborar en prensa desde los dieciocho años. Después de haber combatido en los inicios de la guerra, dejó Francia en 1942 para unirse a las filas de De Gaulle junto con su tío, el escritor Joseph Kessel, con quien escribió la letra del famoso Canto de los partisanos que fue utilizado como himno por la Resistencia Francesa.

En 1946 retomó su carrera literaria y en 1948 recibió el premio Goncourt por la novela Las grandes familias, primera parte de la célebre trilogía que completaría con las novelas La caída de los cuerpos y Cita en los infiernos (que Libros del Asteroide publicó en 2009). Entre su extensa obra, que consta de novelas, ensayos y obras teatrales y de literatura infantil, destaca también la exitosa serie de novelas históricas Los reyes malditos, que publicó entre 1955 y 1977. A finales de 1966 fue elegido miembro de la Academia Francesa, de la que fue secretario perpetuo desde 1985 hasta su dimisión en 1999. Desde esta institución se erigió en uno de los más acérrimos y polémicos defensores de la lengua francesa.

Desarrolló también una brillante carrera política: fue ministro de Cultura entre 1973 y 1974 siendo Georges Pompidou presidente de la República, ocupó varios cargos diplomáticos y fue diputado por París entre 1978 y 1981. Entre las innumerables distinciones que recibió a lo largo de su carrera cabe nombrar la de Comendador de las Artes y las Letras. Murió en París pocos días antes de cumplir 91 años.

Druon es un autor de mediados del siglo pasado, el XX, me parece increíble como han cambiado los gustos literarios desde entonces. Realmente me decepcionó porque leí su serie de los Reyes de Francia, y esta novela no se compara con ellos.

Wren's bride of six weeks, San Francisco cop Susan Donovan, holds grief at bay while assuming Dan's job and concentrating on finding his murderer. Then, Lucille, a local reporter-friend of Dan's, disappears, and eager to find her, Susan tracks her to Kansas City, where she discovers her strangled body under a hotel bed. Did the two murders have anything to do with violent Vic Pollack and the disappearance of his wife Emma Lou? There's another murder, as well as several wrong directions taken, before Susan pieces together the complicated reasons why Dan and the others died and, finally, before she settles down to mourn. Strong plotting and a contemporary, vulnerable heroine manage to overcome some rather mundane writing--and Susan, along with deputies Osey and Holmes and dispatcher Hazel, could form a strong nucleus for a series. So-so

This was an interesting story and easy to read, but not realistic. No town would put up with a temporary police chief who made as many boneheaded mistakes as Susan Wren did. Nevertheless, I will read one more book in the series to see if she improves. If not, that will be my last.
P.S. I learned a lot more about bull semen that I really wanted to know.

Unfortunately the main character got on my last nerve

First Line: Definite disadvantages to being chief of police, Dan Wren thought as he headed the pickup along the graveled, hilly road past tree-dotted fields with barbed wire fences.

Thirtysomething San Francisco police officer Susan Donovan meets the man of her dreams at a conference. Within six weeks, she's married, she's moved to northeastern Kansas with her police chief husband, Dan Wren... and she's a widow. Susan gets herself appointed temporary chief of police and vows to find her husband's killer. When another person dies, the mayor wants her gone, but Susan manages to get a five-day reprieve. Will she find the killer before time runs out?

Mysteries set in Kansas are not common, and Weir skillfully guides us through a Great Plains winter, the vagaries of the multi-million-dollar bull sperm business, and a search for a toxic waste dump. All that was interesting and the pace moved right along. What didn't work for me was the main character. It wasn't until the end of the book that I ever felt that Susan had been a police officer on the San Francisco police force. She didn't use her brain; she let her rage and grief take command and lead her into numerous dangerous situations. I tried to take it easy on her, allowing her time to grieve, but sooner or later when a character keeps behaving like the blonde bimbo in a slasher movie, I'm going to hold the basement door open for her the next time there's a weird noise down there.

To sum it up: fine setting, good pace, and the murderer was not easy to spot; however, the main character got on my last nerve. Toto, I took the first plane out of Kansas.

A History of Civil Litigation: Political and Economic Perspectives, by Frank J. Vandall, studies the expansion of civil liability from 1466 to 1980, and the cessation of that growth in 1980. It evaluates the creation of tort causes of action during the period of 1400-1980. Re-evaluation and limitation of those developments from 1980, to the present, are specifically considered.

The unique focus of the book is first, to argue that civil justice no longer rests on historic foundations, such as, precedent, fairness and impartiality, but has shifted to power and influence. Reform in the law (legislative, judicial, and regulatory) is today driven by financial interests, not precedent, not a neutral desire for fairness, and not to "make it better." It uses products, cases and policies for much of its argument. These policies can be summarized as a shift from a balanced playing field, negligence, to one that favors injured consumers. The strict liability foreshadowed by Judge Traynor, in Escola v. Coca Cola (1944), was not adopted until 1962, when Traynor wrote the majority opinion in Greenman v. Yuba Power Products for the California Supreme Court. Second, the book examines the role of persuasive non-governmental agencies, such as the American Law Institute, in reforming and shaping civil justice.

Never has it been less true that we live under the rule of law. Congress, agencies and the courts make the law, but they are driven by those who have a large financial stake in the outcome. Today, those with power shape the character of products liability law, at every turn.

About the Author

Frank J. Vandall is one of the most senior faculty members at Emory University School of Law, where he has taught for over 40 years. He teaches Torts and Products Liability and has a casebook in each subject. He was a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics and the Roger Traynor Research Scholar at Hastings College of the Law. He taught in Ohio and Georgia and has presented papers in England, Germany, Greece and Switzerland. His areas of emphasis are public policy, tobacco and gun litigation. He has written seven books dealing with diverse subjects, such as strict liability and police training, and he has authored over thirty-five civil litigation articles on topics such as the Ford Pinto, the social costs of tobacco, casino gambling, city suits against gun manufacturers and internet gambling. Professor Vandall recently testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the question of whether corporations should be criminally prosecuted for manufacturing a product that is knowingly defective and takes lives. His B.A. was earned at Washington and Jefferson College, his J.D. at Vanderbilt and his L.L.M. and S.J.D. degrees from Wisconsin.
