About the Author
Peter B. Lane served two tours as a fighter pilot in Vietnam and then earned his doctorate in Eastern European history from the University of Washington. He teaches history at the University of North Texas and specializes in European history and the Bosnian crisis.
Ronald E. Marcello received his Ph.D. from Duke University and is professor of history at the University of North Texas and director of the Oral History Program, where he has conducted over 1,000 interviews with World War II veterans. Coeditor of three books dealing with oral history and military history, his academic specialty is the Age of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Thirteen articles from WW II to Iraq

This series of thirteen articles on warfare. It is broken down into seven sections chronologically. The first two sections begin with World War II. One very interesting article is on the truman decision to drop the atomic bomb. He discusses what really happened, and then talks about the recent revisionist historians who question this decision.
The final section in the book is on Terrorism. There are two articles in this section, one is on the 'Psychology of Terrorists and Terrorism.' The article is written by Dr. Norman Itzkowitz. He is the aurhor, co-author, editor or translator of eleven books on Near Eastern or Balkan subjects. His discussion covers several aspects on terrorism from the views of the europeans, comparisons with previous terrorist operations from the Romans on, describes the organizations terrorist have, and so on.
The last article is on a comparison between the present war in Iraq with the US War in the Philippines beginning in 1899.
These articles originally came from the University of North Texas's annual Military History Seminar.

Surviving in WW II

As the book's title indicates , this is a book which reviews actions in WW II by participant veterans in various branches of the military (the Warriors),and a review of various decisions and events by military historians (the scholars). The product of two University of North Texas military history professors, readers will find it to be both interesting and enlightening on a subject well traveled!

Something for Almost Everybody

This anthology of presentations to UNT's annual history seminars contains wide variety and insightful commentary. Especially noteworthy is the mixture of "trigger pullers," flag officers, and distinguished historians. In short, excepting naval warfare, this book has something for everyone interested in military history. That omission is the only reason for a four-star rating.
The WW II and Korean War chapters are interesting in themselves--especially the analysis of the A-bomb options in 1945--but I found the Vietnam and Cold War portions especially compelling. Gen. Russell Dougherty's view as a 1970s commander of SAC is highly instructive, and Dr. Herring's assessment of Lyndon Johnson as commander in chief is balanced, despite the Texan's massive flaws.
Gen. Winn's view from the Hanoi Hilton contains material that few ex-POWs have addressed--the internal dissent over an escape policy. Having known some of the players he mentions, his view of significant POW personalities explains some of the postwar clashes.
Gen. Hamm's chapter may be the most interesting of all. His rare view as US Defense Attache in Moscow during the early 80s offers a perspective that few readers have ever seen.
Finally, the two portions on the age of terrorism remain valid today. The psychology of terrorism and the historic comparison of the Philippine campaign of the early 1900s (little known today) provide important references.
