Focusing on the spinal cord and its role in motor control, Restorative Neurology of Spinal Cord Injury details the clinical and neurophysiological assessment process and methods developed throughout the past half century by basic and clinical scientists. Then, through the use of specialized clinical and neurophysiological testing methods, conduction and processing performed within the surviving neural circuitry is examined and characterized in detail. Based on the results of such assessment, treatment strategies, also described in this book, are applied to augment, rather than replace, the performance of surviving neural circuitry and improve the functional capacity of people who have experienced injury to their spinal cords.

Luz had nightheat, the sensuous quality in a woman that makes men ache with desire. Nick loved and lusted for her the first time he saw her. But what he didn't know was that Luz had secrets--that beneath the glamour and sex appeal was a woman determined to turn her back on wealth and challenge a corrupt political system. Even if doing so meant her life.

Nick started out dirt poor--as a child, he survived the war-torn frozen hell of the siege of Leningrad and saw his mother starve to death as fat-cat bureaucrats ate well. He learned early that there were the haves and have-nots in this world. He was going to get everything rich people had--and more.

From a brutal Soviet orphanage to a plantation in the steamy jungles of the Caribbean, from sultry, violent Havana to the dangerous streets of Santo Domingo, Nick battled men who controlled and exploited the wealth of nations. With bootleg vodka and exotic rum, he built a business empire that would one day bring him into conflict with the most brutal dictator in the Caribbean--and a struggle for the love and life of the only woman he ever truly loved.

From Booklist
Robbins fans will not be disappointed in this latest book from the dead author's estate. (Robbins died in 1997, but his editors and estate continue to publish books in his name, based on ideas he left behind when he died.) In this latest one, cowritten by Podrug, we meet Nick Cutter, who in the manner of all Robbins heroes is irresistible to women, street-smart, and--above all-- rich. Nick, who started childhood in a Russian orphanage after watching his mother starve to death during the seige of Leningrad, has kicked and scratched his way to the top. The novel follows his life--and loves, since Robbins' books generally contain a lot of descriptive, sometimes cringe-inducing, sexual escapades, and this one is no exception--from Russia to the Caribbean and finally to Cuba, where he fights gangsters and dictators to build a bootlegging empire and eventually struggles to save the life of the only woman he has ever truly loved. No surprises in this rather typical Robbins story line, but his fans will enjoy the book nonetheless. Kathleen Hughes

I started reading this book two days ago and am half way through it. I was hooked from page 1. It has heaps of relevant history (I am a history buff and loved revisiting what I had learnt in high school about Russia's 900 day seige). Junius Podrug bring's this Harold Robbins novel alive with his smooth, fast-paced narration. It also gave me tremendous insight into the Carribean, which I have a fascination for,as well as the exotic Havana, Cuba. A brilliant, masterpiece.

Harold Robbins Lives On
By Ali I. Rizvi
The Betrayers, a symphony, a story so smooth; and Junius Podrug keeps Robbins legacy very much alive.

Nick is the love child of a british and russian communist visionaries, who move to Russia for hopes of building a better society. The communist system kills nicks father and his mother starves to death in the deadly siege of Leningrad, Russia, by Nazi Germany.

Nick grows up in a brutal Russian Orphanage, where he learns more about life then in any school. He becomes a delivery boy for the gang leader who illegally produces and sells cheaply made vodka at his farm. Nick gets caught by the NKVD (the soviet secret service) for illegal activities. He is in jail, about to hear a death sentence when he is thrown a lifeline by a British lawyer.

The lawyer was sent by Nicks grandfather, who was english. He passed away, but had never seen his grandson, and his last wish was to get nick out of the Soviet union and be sent to his remaining family: Nicks father's step sister and her husband in the British Hondurus.

His half Aunt is a kind woman who loves her abusive husband Jack. Despite quarrells among Jack and Nick they managed to stay together, untill Nick buys another farm in the area and starts manufacturing vodka and rum. This is the start of his career. His quest for making money through liquor takes him from Hondurus, to Cuba, to Dominican republic. His business takes him to Santo Domingo, where he meets luz, a woman with dark secrets. He ends up battling dictators with their armies for this woman who he falls in love dearly.

A stunning historical thriller
By Kwame M
This is clearly not the handwritten work of Mr. Robbins that much we know. I don't even know if I can say it was that inspired by him. What I do know however is that this is a very strong work all around, one that holds up very well without the Robbins tag. It was a very well-written piece of cold war fiction and only wished it was a little longer. Rich in all the right ingredients: action, drama, intrigue, money, greed and of course, sex, all interwoven with well researched historical information. I do however gripe over the fact that it didn't allow for a lot of character development, but I suppose that is what we are to expect from a book of its length. In any case, very solid effort I think.

The Measure of All Things: The Seven-Year Odyssey and Hidden Error That Transformed the World, by Ken Alder

In June 1792, amidst the chaos of the French Revolution, two intrepid astronomers set out in opposite directions on an extraordinary journey. Starting in Paris, Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre would make his way north to Dunkirk, while Pierre-François-André Méchain voyaged south to Barcelona. Their mission was to measure the world, and their findings would help define the meter as one ten-millionth of the distance between the pole and the equator—a standard that would be used “for all people, for all time.”

The Measure of All Things is the astonishing tale of one of history’s greatest scientific adventures. Yet behind the public triumph of the metric system lies a secret error, one that is perpetuated in every subsequent definition of the meter. As acclaimed historian and novelist Ken Alder discovered through his research, there were only two people on the planet who knew the full extent of this error: Delambre and Méchain themselves.

By turns a science history, detective tale, and human drama, The Measure of All Things describes a quest that succeeded as it failed—and continues to enlighten and inspire to this day.

A story about science and scientists
By Guillermo Maynez
This book follows a recent trend, which has produced some very good books, to take a relevant but poorly known scientific development and telling its story and the story of its main protagonists. Alder has chosen the story of how, in the late XVIII Century, the Royal Academy of Sciences in France was trying hard to reach the definitive measurement of the meter, and hence of all the metric system, the one which today dominates weights and measures around the world. The meter was supposed to be a ten millionth of the distance from one of the poles to the equator. The French proposed taking a sample of one meridian, the segment running from Dunkirk down to Barcelona, measuring it to perfection and then inferring the rest of the distance of the meridian. One ten millionth of that would be the meter. Two outstanding astronomers are chosen for the job, which was supposed to last no more than a year. But alas, the French Revolution comes to full gear at the beginning of the labors, and our scientists suffer all kinds of setbacks, prolonging the task for seven long and hard years.

Who were these gentlemen? Well, here is where the story gets all its fascinating features, illuminating the reader about how much the personalities involved in research can affect the scientific outcome of it. The first man is Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre. He is a man of humble origins, a Classicist who has become tutor to a noble and rich family. A late bloomer, Delambre has become a remarkable astronomer almost all by himself, as a disciple of renowned (a magnificent and eccentric character) Jerome Lalande. The other man is a professional astronomer, also a disicple of Lalande's. His name is Pierre Francois Andre Mechain, who lives in the Royal Observatory in Paris.

Delambre goes north of Paris to Dunkirk while Mechain goes south to Barcelona. In the early days of their quest, political events (the execution of King Louis XVI and the instauration of the Terror) impose severe setbacks to both scientists. So severe, that the original year of labor will stretch to seven years. This is where the book reaches high altitudes, when it describes the differences in personalities between Delambre and Mechain. Granted, Mechain suffers much more, including a terrible accident and exile in Italy. But while Delambre is patient, practical and business-going, Mechain starts developing a severe anguish, emotional imbalance and paranoia. All this is aggravated by a mysterious situation, which really becomes the axis of the story: while measuring up the latitude at Montjuich, south of Barcelona, Mechain seems to make a mistake which will torment him for the rest of his life. One of the meditions (each one related to a different star) simply doesn't fit with the rest. Delambre or any other practical astronomer would simply have dismissed the incongrous data as a mysterious distortion, but Mechain, a man obsessed with an accuracy impossible for his age, decides not to disclose the mistake, fearing it might destroy his reputation. And so, year after year, he carries along his guilt and his paranoia.

Somehow, the book has a happy ending I will not spoil here. Suffice it to say this a very interesting and well written story about a true and relevant scientific quest. Don't get bogged down in scientific detail if you don't get everyting right. The adventure and the human story are more than satisfactory enough.

Best Meter Forward
By Maddi Hausmann
This is a fascinating book! Ken Alder covers the birth of the metric system, but manages to work in a marvelous overview of measurement, history of science, philosophy, politics, and a front-row seat at the French Revolution. While the rationalists wanted a new unit of measurement based on the earth itself, politics in government and among the thinkers (savants) kept derailing the project. The survey of the Paris Meridian, expected to take a few months, ended up taking seven years due to war, plague, inflation, politics, fear, jealousy, rivalry, insular business practices, and despondency.
Alder introduces us to the two men driving the survey, Delambre and Mechain, and describes all the problems preventing a quick measurement from Dunkirk to Barcelona. He covers the multitude of measurement units, different in each city or town, and even varying by profession, that led to the demand for standard measures. Yet this "rational" way meant uprooting existing social contracts, such as the "just price" of a product that reflected not only costs, but the relationships between customer and vendor, or lord and peasant. Fields were measured not by area but in how long it took to plow them or how many bushels of seed they required. Lords actually owned reference measurement units and received royalties when they were copied. Differing units kept outsiders from taking advantage of a town's economy. Delambra and Mechain's project would upset all this, and not everyone supporting the Revolution wanted to eliminate these old ways.
This is a book not only about how we measure and why, not only about Delambre and Mechain's arduous and separate journeys through France, or the political fallout over adoption of the metric system, but also the change in philosophy that turned savants into scientists and forced them to deal with the concept of error. Mechain could not accept that his meticulous work was "wrong" so he suppressed his results, but this drove him to worse than distraction. Delambre only found out the truth upon Mechain's death, for the latter would not part with his raw data. And Alder achieves a coup in discovering Delambre's correspondence and notes on the whole matter, including the resultant meter that wasn't as accurate as advertised.
Informative, wide-ranging, and evocative, a terrific addition to your science shelf.

History, Science and Human Nature
By RV
The Measure of All Things tells the incredible story of the Metric System's origin. During the early days of the French revolution, two astronomers are sent on a mission to precisely measure a part of the meridian arc passing through France and Spain. The plan is to use these measurements to calculate the length of the Meter, which was then defined as one ten millionth of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator. The book is exceptionally well researched and written, and Adler is not satisfied with simply relating dry historical facts to his readers. This book truly makes 18th century Europe come to life.
What I found fascinating about this book was not so much the story of the creation of a new measurement system, but the fact that this ambitious mission took place in an age of extreme political and societal turmoil. While this mission was in progress, governments in France changed several times, wars and battles were won and lost, and hyper inflation devastated the French economy.
My biggest complaint about this book, and it is a major one, is that I often felt that Adler was taking creative freedom with history - conjuring the thoughts and feelings of historical figures without basing his conjectures on any reliable source. I feel that this is not appropriate in a book about the history of science.
Bottom line: this is a very good book that I warmly recommend to anyone interested in history in general and in the history of science in particular. For those who enjoy the subject, I would also like to recommend "Measuring Eternity: The Search for the Beginning of Time" by Martin Gorst.

The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen: Classic Family Recipes for Celebration and Healing, by Grace Young

The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen, with its 150 recipes culled from a lifetime of family meals and culinary instruction, is much more than a cookbook. It is a daughter's tribute -- a collection of personal memories of the philosophy and superstitions behind culinary traditions that have been passed down through her Cantonese family, in which each ingredient has its own singular importance, the preparation of a meal is part of the joy of life, and the proper creation of a dish can have a favorable influence on health and good fortune. Each chapter begins with its own engaging story, offering insight into the Chinese beliefs that surround life-enhancing and spiritually calming meals. In addition, personal family photographs illustrate these stories and capture the spirit of China before the Revolution, when Young's family lived in Canton, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
The first part, "Mastering the Fundamentals," provides instruction on the arts of steaming and stir-frying; the preparation of rice, panfried, and braised dishes; the proper selection of produce; and the fine arts of chopping and slicing. Part Two, "The Art of Celebration," concentrates on the more elaborate, complex, and meaningful dishes -- such as Shark's Fin Soup and West Lake Duck -- that are usually made with rare ingredients, and sweets such as Water Chestnut Cake and Sesame Balls. The final part, "Achieving Yin-Yang Harmony," explores the many Chinese beliefs about the healing properties of ginseng, gingko nuts, soybeans, dong quai, and the many vegetable and fruit soup preparations that balance and nourish the body. The stories and recipes combine to demonstrate the range of Cantonese cooking, from rich flavors and honored combinations to an overall appreciation of health, well-being, and prosperity.
In addition to the recipes, Young provides a complete glossary of dried herbs, spices, and fresh produce, accompanied by identifying photos and tips on where to purchase them. Unique traditional dishes, such as Savory Rice Tamales and Shrimp Dumplings, are also illustrated step by step, making the book easy to use. The central full-color photo section captures details of New Year's dishes and the Chinese home decorated in celebration, reminding one that these time-honored traditions live on, and the meals and their creation are connections to the past.

Amazon.com Review
Grace Young is a culinary sister to novelist Amy Tan. In The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen, along with sharing recipes from her family, Young immerses the reader in Chinese culture and the Chinese American experience of San Francisco's Chinatown, where she grew up. This personal book began with Young's wish to preserve the Cantonese dishes prepared by her parents and extended family. Since they cooked by instinct, the only way to record their recipes was by observing her mother, father, and aunties while they cooked, and by asking endless questions. These kitchen conversations also became a way to elicit untold family history from her deeply traditional and reticent parents.

Each chapter opens with an essay intertwining biographical stories with information about Chinese food and healing. The blending of culinary information and cultural observations is powerfully realized, perhaps because Young shows old-fashioned respect along with a contemporary perspective. The result is both affectionate and enthralling. You can vividly picture the meticulous choreography as her parents make dinner in their tiny kitchen, reaching over steaming pots and rushing the steaming food to the table.

Young delves into the hows and whys of Cantonese home cooking, with particular attention to technique and ingredients: Chinese broccoli with flowers should be avoided because the bright yellow blossoms indicate the stalks are too old. Steaming is valued because it draws out the intense flavors near the bone in chicken, fish, and meat, leaving them tender and moist.

Many dishes are elementally simple. Hot-and-Sour Soup is fired solely by aromatic white pepper. White Chicken is perfumed just with ginger and garlic. Some choices are quick and easy, as in stir-fried Bean Sprouts, while others require long and elaborate preparation, like savory Rice Tamales stuffed with pork, Chinese sausage, and duck egg yolks and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Anyone who enjoys eating Chinese food or has experienced the generational differences in immigrant families will get lost in The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen. --Dana Jacobi

From Publishers Weekly
San Francisco native and recipe developer Young (The Best of China; The Best of Thailand) recalls the classic Cantonese meals of her youth, sharing family anecdotes and the basic tenets of Chinese cooking. In Part I, "Mastering the Fundamentals," she introduces essential techniques of the Chinese kitchen: selecting produce, chopping, slicing, steaming, stir-frying, even correctly preparing rice. Aiming to preserve the integrity of traditional dishes, Young instructs with Cantonese de rigueur, eschewing substitutes for such exotic ingredients and shortcuts as food processors. Although labor-intensive steps often precede the cooking process, this 140-recipe collection provides clear, straightforward instruction largely accessible to home cooks. Recognizable favorites such as Eggplant in Garlic Sauce and Pepper and Salt Shrimp, as well as less familiar preparations such as Rock Sugar Ginger Chicken, offer broad palate appeal. Part II, "The Art of Celebration," explores the symbolism of special occasion and Chinese New Year dishes, including Turnip Cake, the glutinous rice flour New Year's Cake, and fried Sesame Balls, all considered harbingers of prosperity for the New Year. Young ends her collection on a holistic note; the last section, "Achieving Yin-Yang Harmony," elaborates the Chinese belief of the yin (cooling) and yang (warming) characteristics of foods as well as their purported remedial and restorative properties. "Tonic soups" include Almond SoupAfor moistening the lungs and clearing the skin. Probing her rich culinary heritage with passion and fortitude, Young expertly reveals ancient secrets encouraging readers to experience the joy of authentic Chinese cooking.

From Library Journal
Although Young, a food writer, grew up in a traditional Chinese American home in San Francisco, until quite recently, she says, she took her culinary heritage for granted. She realized she knew more about other cuisines than the Cantonese cooking of her own background, and so she decided to set down her family's recipes. In the process, she learned much more about her parents, her ancestors, and her extended family than she'd expected, and the result is this lovely, very personal book. The first part includes recipes for the everyday dishes prepared for the family by both her mother and father, introduced by reminiscences such as "Going to Market with Mama" or mini-essays on topics like "The Meaning of Rice." The next section focuses on celebration, specifically the traditions and dishes of the Chinese New Year. The final part is devoted to "Cooking as a Healing Art," with recipes for tonics and soups. (This is the shortest section; Nina Simond's recent A Spoonful of Ginger, LJ 4/15/99, has more on Chinese holistic healing.) Some of Young's recipes are elaborate or require unsual ingredients, but she was interested in the authentic versions, not Americanized Cantonese food, and her instructions are clear and thorough. Well written and absorbing, Young's cookbook/memoir is highly recommended.

Drooling with delight!
By Debbie Tam
As an American Born Chinese, finding this book was a huge relief. Like so many ABCs, I love the food of my culture but certainly didn't know how to prepare it. This is an authentic down home Chinese cookbook. No fancy dishes here - only comfort food need apply. The book is divided into the following: 1) rice from steamed, fried, dumplings and porridge 2) stir fry - including tomato beef and beef chow fun 3) steamed cooking- egg custard, sponge cake, spareribs with black bean sauce 4) cooking with ginger - drunken chicken, cabbage noodle soup 5) seasonal market dishes - braised taro and chinese bacon, stir fried bitter melon with beef 6) celebratory dishes - stir fried clams with black bean sauce, pepper and salt shrimp, sweet and sour pork 7) New Year's dishes - turnip cake, seasame balls 8) authentic recipes from the homeland - savory rice tamales, pork dumplings, stuffed noodle rolls 9) Chinatown favorites - soy sauce chicken, roast duck, barbecued pork and salt roasted chicken 10) a slew of healing soups and dishes. Reading it was a trip down memory lane for me. The dishes are truly authentic to the Chinese family experience and or those who seek authenticity, Young has presented it here. She also includes a handy guide to shopping and mail order resources!

A Cookbook of Memories
By Macy M T Ting
Having been born in Hong Kong and having lived there and in Taiwan for the first 15 years of my life, this cookbook brought back vast memories. I love cooking, and have a wide range of cookbooks. But until now, I have never come across a Chinese cookbook that captures so much of the "essence" of Chinese cooking as in Ms. Young's "The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen." Reading this cookbook is like looking back into my childhood and how I grew up. I am astounded at how accurate Ms. Young described all the traditions the Chinese attach to food. The section on Chinese New Year is especially meaningful to me; all the dishes are ones that I ate as a child during Chinese New Year. It was indeed a nostalgic moment for me as I read it.
I have tried several of the recipes, and the results have been excellent. What I find most helpful is the glossary and the pictures of the food items that are more unique to Chinese cooking. With this aid, I can now go shopping at an Asian supermarkets with much more confidence.
In all, this is a terrific tome that takes away some of the "mysteries" of Chinese cooking, and in turn, allows everyday cooks like myself to be able to enjoy Chinese home cooking.

The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen: Classic Family Recipes
By John Szeto
I bought this cookbook about 6 months ago. When I finished reading the book, I immediately sent an e-mail to the author thanking her for her work in this book. I also watched the CBS Sunday Morning Special about this cookbook. I ,too,was a Chinese immigrant and learning cooking from watching my dad and mom without any measurement of the "stuff" you put in a dish. Often as I cook, I do not measure the ingredients. Many of my American friends want the reciepes of the dishes I cook and too often I am too lazy to write them down. Now, I have Ms. Young to thank you for writing this cookbok. Many of the fine reciepes in this cookbook I shared with my Amercian friends. They too have read and said they enjoy the history and the philosophy of the Chinese cooking. I would recommended this book for anybody who is learning about Chinese cooking. This cookbook by far are on my number one list of the chinese cookbook of this decade. Oh, by other way(Ms. Young), the most frequent reciepes that I shared with American friends is "Tomato Beef." Your brother was right! (You should not omit this receipe.)

Brotherhood of the Skies: Wartime Experiences of a Gunnery Officer and Typhoon Pilot, by David Ince DFc

David Ince may have only managed to pass the RAF medical board at this third attempt, but this did not stop him from forging a highly successful aviation career. After flying Hurricanes and Mustangs at 41 OTU, he converted to Typhoons and flew with 193 and 257 Squadrons, from Normandy until the end of hostilities in Europe. He completed almost 150 sorties and was awarded an immediate DFC. He also took a leading part in trials, demonstrations and the early operational use of Napalm.

In the closing stages of the war he was leading 193 Squadron on shipping strikes in the Baltic. Following the war, he attended a course at ETPS, was chairman of the Typhoon (Entente Cordiale) Trust, and was in the driving seat for its dynamic and growing relationship with the French in Normandy, the developing reconciliation between former foes and the new Typhoon squadrons of RAF Coningsby.

'Brotherhood of the Skies' is an engaging study of leadership in action. The author is frank and outspoken about the courage, fear, team spirit and motivation that he and his comrades shared throughout the war. Laden with fresh information and perspectives, he explores elements of airpower that have been ignored in the past, pulling no punches in his analysis of army cooperation, fighter ground attack and reconnaissance – and the problems and achievements of operational training – against a wide background of personal experience and hard lessons learned.

David Ince’s remarkable life in flight is atmospherically told and skillfully conveys the urgency and mood of the times, the fascinating people he encountered, and the obstacles he met along the way. David lives in retirement in Winchester, Hampshire and is available for interview.

Greaty book on tactical airsupport in WWII
By Racer X
This is a really good book about flying the Typhoon in WWII and the support of ground troops. The book follows the author from his entry into pilot training until well after the war. I felt the best part of this book was the years following the war. Most books end at the end of the war or the persons removal from combat for various reasons. This book continues on until present day. The book was published in 2010. Its interesting to see the author meet former adversaries and how things are in Germany after the war. The final chapter about passing on the torch,setting up an association and erecting a memorial set this book apart from others I have read.

Excellent first hand account
By Vince G Petrie
This is an excellent first hand account of a pilot's combat experiences in WW2. Full of action, which I love. A great read and a great value for the price. I recommend this for readers who want to learn about some of the lesser known battles of the war.

Combat pilot to peacemaker, a short autobiography and a fascinating tale
By The Guardian
`Brotherhood of the Skies' is the abbreviated autobiography of David Ince DFC, who began WW2 as an artillery officer in the British Army but whose persistence and determination to fly (despite initially failing the eyesight test) led him eventually to pilot training in Canada and transfer to the RAF where he flew Hawker Typhoon ground attack aircraft in combat for the last 11 months of the European war. It's an engrossing tale from an author whose racy writing style makes for a lively and entertaining read.

Around one third of the book's 217-page narrative recounts the author's time in the Army and his struggle to be accepted for pilot training, working through the system to finally achieve his dream of a fighter squadron posting (193 squadron, part of 146 Wing of 2nd TAF) in June 1944. Some quite detailed chapters then follow on the powerful and effective Typhoon, is strengths and minor foibles and how exactly it was used on combat missions in support of 21st Army Group in the final year of WW2.

Although the `Tiffy' was best known amongst ground troops of both sides as a devastating attack aircraft armed with 60lb rocket projectiles, Ince's squadron's Typhoons were never rocket armed but carried bombs in their ground attack role. They rarely encountered the Lutfwaffe in air-to-air combat but carried out plenty of attacks on Wehrmacht and Waffen SS armoured units and were constantly attacked by flak at low level. The Typhoon pilot's life was considered so dangerous that requests to Spitfire squadrons (mainly deployed in air-to-air combat, bomber escort duties and against V1 flying bombs) for replacements for the depleted ranks of Typhoon pilots rarely produced any volunteers.

The latter part of the book recounts Ince's post-war experiences as a test pilot and working in the aircraft industry. He became personal friends with many former Luftwaffe pilots and strong bonds were formed between these former enemies - the `Brotherhood of the Skies' of the title.

Ince recounts in some detail his close-up exposure to the products of the German aircraft industry in 1945: the `Gustav', Me 262 jet fighter, Dornier 335 and Horton flying wing, plus others which in many cases were simply left abandoned, brand new, on Luftwaffe air bases. The author also flew the Spitfire, Hurricane, both Allison- & Merlin-engined Mustangs, the magnificent Tempest ("a perfected Typhoon") and the Gloster Meteor and de Havilland Vampire jets, and offers some detailed pilot's perspectives on these aircraft likely to be of great interest to enthusiasts.

In summary: a fine book from a courageous man of great determination and intelligence, recommended for any aviation enthusiast interested in this period. The single-mindedness and motivational drive of military pilots in the WW2 period really shines through, and how they subsequently adjusted to life in peacetime is a great story.

The Rithmatist, by Brandon Sanderson

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson: his debut novel for the young adult audience

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.
Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense—the first of a series. From School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-The idea that evil chalk drawings pose a threat to humanity quite frankly sounds silly. Add in the none-too-subtle Harry Potter parallels and you have the makings of literary mediocrity. And yet Sanderson has crafted an action-packed mystery that will keep readers hooked, especially toward the end. Joel is an underachieving, charity-case student at the elite Ardemius Academy where his mother is a cleaning lady and his late father made chalk for Rithmatists. In the hands of a Rithmatist, chalk is a weapon keeping North America safe from wild "chalklings," two-dimensional beasts of unknown origins. Only one in 1000 people possess Rithmatic abilities. Much to Joel's chagrin, he is not one of them. But when Rithmatic students begin disappearing, Joel gets a chance to help in the investigation, and maybe get another shot at becoming one of the elite. Part fantasy, part alternate history, part steampunk, this story succeeds nicely despite some flaws (logical inconsistencies and an annoying female lead foremost among them). An exciting ending and skillful setup for a sequel will have readers hungry for the next volume.-Anthony C. Doyle, Livingston High School Library, CAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Joel longs to be a Rithmatist with the magical power to bring two-dimensional objects, called Chalklings, to life. But he is 16, and Rithmatists are chosen at age 8. Surely he has missed his chance, or has he? When Rithmatists-in-training at the prestigious Armedius Academy begin to go missing, Joel—a scholarship student there—determines to find out what has happened to them. Could it possibly have something to do with the Wild Chalklings of the Nebrask territory? Could his success or failure determine the fate of the American Isles? And, for that matter, could he become a Rithmatist, after all? So many questions and so few answers in this spoiler-free review. Suffice it to say that with an intriguing premise and captivating characters in Joel, his friend Melody, and their teacher Professor Fitch, Sanderson’s first YA novel is a fast-paced mash-up of fantasy and adventure that will grab readers’ attention at the first page and hold it until the inconclusive end, which promises a sequel. An auspicious YA debut that will leave readers hungry for further adventures of the aspiring Rithmatist and his friends. Grades 6-12. --Michael Cart

Review
I recommend The Rithmatist to fans of Brandon Sanderson, as it contains the wonderful qualities that he is known for as a fantasy author. I also recommend it to everybody else. Whether you love or hate epic fantasy, this book is something different. It's an easy read, absorbing, and has the kind of twists and turns that will leave you clamouring for more. I firmly believe that this can be considered Harry Potter for the next generation. I love it that much. ONCE UPON A TIME 20130808

Good choice for YA -- Info for parents. No spoilers.
By Patricia
First off, if you are a Sanderson fan, keep in mind that this is written for teens, so do not expect anything along the lines of his other books. This is NOT like Mistborn or his other works! So if you are looking for an epic novel in The Rithmatist, skip it and be patient for Sanderson's next work.

As the parent who was always on the lookout for good books, I appreciated reviews that helped me choose what to order. This is written with an eye to helping other parents. No spoilers.

The Rithmatist is about a young man, Joel, who is attending an exclusive school that trains both Rithmatist and non-Rithmatist students. Rithmatists have the ability to bring chalk drawings, called chalkings, to life, and to use symbols in chalk for defensive and offensive purposes. Joel is not a Rithmatist, although he yearns to be one and is trying to learn as much about the subject as possible. His father was a chalkmaker, but died 8 years earlier, and his mother works as a cleaning woman at night while Joel attends the school on a scholarship. He is a very smart, but only applies himself to those subjects that interest him. When Rithmatist students begin disappearing, Joel is assigned as a summerschool aide to a Rithmatist professor, and he becomes involved in the professor's investigation, along with another Rithmatist student, Melody.

From a parent's point of view, this is a good choice. It has no foul language or sexual situations of any sort. There is some violence, but it is generally not seen as it happens 'off stage.' And, the violence is of an otherworldly type and not something a child could ever experience or likely to cause nightmares.

I liked the way that Sanderson put moral lessons in the book, although it is not preachy at all. It is very positive for young people, and provides good opportunities for parents to discuss several issues with their children. For example, at one point a professor points out to the young hero, who has failed at least one class a year due to lack of interest in the subject, that "school is about learning to learn. If you don't practice studying things you don't like, then you'll have a very hard time in life."

The issue of bullying is touched on, as is the feelings of being left out of social activities and the popular cliques. Joel makes several discoveries about himself, and we see characters, child and adult, gaining confidence in themselves. My favorite passage is when the older professor encourages Joel to consider the man he wishes to become, and warns of what to avoid along the path of life.

The characters are done very well, but I expected this from the author who wrote the Mistborn series, one of the very best books/series I have ever read. The major characters have distinct voices and traits, and act according to how you would expect, based on those traits- nothing odd or out of character. I think young readers could readily identify with Joel, although Melody is rather whiny and spoiled, and she is very close to being annoying. She does, however, grow and change.

The adults are adults, and are not portrayed as being inept or stupid- something that bothers me, whether it be in literature, movies, or TV. It is a YA book, so of course the hero saves the day. But, the younger characters show respect for the adults and look to them for guidance. Joel loves his mother and wishes a better life for her, and he comes to realize the sacrifices she is making. A male is the hero and focus of the story, but I think both boys and girls will enjoy the book. Melody is not very likable at first, but, as I mentioned, she does grow and gain confidence as the story goes on. So, there are good role models for both female and male young readers to identify with, particularly since the characters are not perfect.

The magic system is interesting, and Sanderson includes quite a bit of explanation, mainly in the form of drawings and notations at the beginning of every chapter. There are also small drawings scattered throughout the text, something readers of any age will certainly enjoy. It is based on chalk drawings, and I'm not sure how a 2D drawing is supposed to be able to injure a person, but this is fantasy, so you just have to ignore that little problem.

The setting is an alternate version of our own world, with the United Isles of America, and other half-way recognizable countries and states. There are some names from history mentioned, too, which adds to the alternate history feel of the story. There's enough history of the conflict and crisis with the wild chalkings for the reader to understand the pressure on the Rithmatists, but the story does not dwell on it.

There are religious elements in the story, and although I found it confusing, religion did not play a large role. Perhaps it will be more important in the sequel. At any rate, you can read and enjoy the book without giving any thought to the religious part.

It is a steam punk world (check out the horse on the cover!) and I wish more had been made of it since Sanderson made a very interesting one, indeed. No gas-powered vehicles- everything works by coiled springs wound tightly, even the mechanical crabs scuttling about clipping grass. If there's a sequel, I'm hoping there will be more of the technology. Other than that, this could take place at any boarding school, be it in a fantasy world or ours- it will seem familiar and not overly strange to any reader.

The story is interesting, but if you are looking for a story with lots of action and excitement you might be disappointed. It is slow during the first half of the book. Much time is spent on how Joel fervently desires to be a Rithmatist, how his situation is a sad one, and how there is a separation amongst the students. I thought this should have been covered in much less space. There are the disappearances, eventually, but they are off-stage. As I read I kept thinking that younger readers might grow bored. It does get better, but it takes a while.

The ending is exciting, and there is a nice setup for a sequel. Even so, this book can stand alone since it does have a problem to be solved and it is wrapped up well.

Targeted for ages 13 and up, I think even younger children could read this without difficulty, if they did not get bored when the story drags a bit and quit. Teens (and adults) who enjoy a more thoughtful fantasy will enjoy it, too.

Excellent YA Fantasy

Plot (taken from the book description)

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings--merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. What I Liked
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, boy. Where to begin?
1) Characters. I really liked the characters. I felt the characters of non-Rithmatist Joel and Rithmatists Melody and Professor Fitch were fantastic. They came to life for me, all having their own distinct personalities. I liked the absent-minded manner that Fitch mentored Joel and I liked the type of relationship that Joel and Melody have. They are complete opposites of each other and I thought Sanderson played with that brilliantly.
2) Setting. Most of this takes place at a school, so this does have a bit of a Harry Potter feel to it. In fact, I think you can draw a lot of similarities, almost like if Harry Potter went to Hogwarts with an interest in magic, but could not perform magic himself. There are more, but I think to delve into that would introduce too many spoilers. For some reason, this really added a level of resonance that made me feel comfortable reading this book.
3) World building. The world building is fantastic! This seems to be our world, with even some familiar historical figures, like Leonardo Da Vinci. However, the landscape is slightly different with America being broken up into a number of islands and such. The United States are named slightly different because of this, for instance he makes reference to a East Carolina and Nebrask, which I imagine is the island of Nebraska.
Because this has the magic system of Rithmatics, which seemed to be introduced in this world about 600 year prior, technology took off in a different direction. There are no engines like we have today, but a huge focus on gear-driven machinery. On the American cover of the book you can see a horse with a bunch of gears sticking out of it, this is how they get around in this version of our world. What fascinated me the most was a train that they took, which was spring-loaded and also seemed to fly over land and over water. It was subtle in the background, but I thought that scene alone really brought this world to life.
A big, though minor to this story, change was the naming and customs of the countries. Apparently, the Aztecs thrived and a common European staple appears to be what we would consider Asian foods. Again, subtle, but added to the history of this world.
4) The Magic System. Brandon Sanderson has been known to come up with amazing magic systems. When I heard he was doing a chalk-drawing book I imagined some kid drawing a dinosaur and suddenly having a new pet. Well, it doesn't happen quite that way. This magic system has certain limitations and capabilities, as every good magic system should. I'll cover how I struggled with the magic system a bit, but in the long run I totally fell in love with it. Reading this book, there appears to be a lot of things yet to be discovered, and I look forward to see what Sanderson does with it in future books.
5) The artwork. This is a book on chalk drawings, so of course this book has a lot of artwork inside of it. There is a form of dueling that is performed with the chalk drawings, which is central to the entire plot, and Ben McSweeney draws several instances of how the chalk drawings work. Also, there are drawings here and there throughout the rest of the text, fleshing out the chalk drawings that Sanderson had depicted in the story.
I loved it.
It really helped me make sense of the chalk-drawing magic system and allowed me to visualize a lot of what was going on in the story. I'm sure there will be an audiobook version of this, but I would suggest picking up the actual book instead for the artwork alone.
And when I say artwork, I don't mean that there are pictures of what happens in the story. All of the artwork--with the possible exception of one picture--is what is drawn with chalk by the Rithmatists. So they aren't high-quality, really. Just informative.
6) The ending. I thought this had a satisfying ending. Sanderson is great at adding twists to the end of his stories, and I didn't see this one coming at all. I loved it. Also, it has one of the best denouements I've ever read. This is a first of a series, so it does leave you wanting more. No cliffhanger, thank goodness, but this is a great setup to a series that I'm sure is only going to get better.
I could not put this book down the last 100 pages, which left me reading until way past my bedtime. I paid for it with sleepiness the next day at work, but it was WORTH IT!
7) Religion. I was fairly surprised what impact Rithmatics plays in religion. I thought Sanderson worked in the topic of religion in this imaginary world quite well. I'm sure future books will delve more into this, but I thought this book did a great job of introcuing the religion and its role over Rithmatists.
What I Didn't Like
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1) Length. Only 370 pages? I thought this was a Sanderson novel!! Well, this is one of his shorter works, but it was long enough to tell the story he wanted to. I wouldn't have complained if this were longer and more of the magic system was fleshed out. I guess we'll get that in future books.

2) The Secret Societies. This seems to be a world where Rithmatists are supposed to keep secrets to themselves, and they even have a secret section of the library. So, there is a lot of mystery, but I just didn't buy it. It seems that if a character befriended the right person who was willing to talk they could find out all they wanted to about Rithmatists. Also, you can check out the books in the secret section, which means borrowing the books from Rithmatic friends isn't difficult. Well, for me, it seemed that anybody could figure out anything they wanted if they were willing to spend a little initiative trying to figure it out.

3) The learning curve. For some reason, I struggled understanding how Rithmatic dueling worked. I had an easier time understanding Allomancy in Sanderson's Mistborn series. I stopped reading about a third of the way through and tried to see if I was missing a frame of reference or something. Best I can tell, this is a very unique magic system, so I just continued with the book.

I'm not sure where I felt comfortable with the magic system, but in time it finally did click. This might just be me and a personal hangup. But if you are reading this and having problems grasping the magic system, hang in there. It seems to come together well enough.

Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~~
I loved this book and can't wait for more to be written. It isn't perfect, but what book is? So, I'm giving it a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars (round it up to 5). Like I mentioned, this is the ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) and I noticed a few mistakes throughout. When this book is released I'm looking forward to picking up another copy and reading it again... with the typos fixed, keeping an eye on the twist, and with a better understanding of Rithmatics throughout the book.
If you love urban fantasies with unique magic systems, this is right up your ally! If you, like me, love Brandon Sanderson, then I don't think you'll be disappointed in this book.
Unique and compelling
By Kat Heckenbach
Let me start by saying two things: One, I have never read anything by Brandon Sanderson before. (I know...*gasp*!) Two, I normally cringe when I find out writers established in the adult fiction market decide to jump on the YA bandwagon.
That said, I could not pass up this ARC when I found out I could get it, and I'm sosososososo glad I took it!
There were so many things I loved about this book. The originality of the concept, although I actually loved that something about the practice of Rithmatics reminded just the *tiniest* bit of "sympathy" in Patrick Rothfuss' "The Name of the Wind." The steampunk-y feel, which reminded me a bit of Scott Westerfeld's "Leviathan." The drawings--normally drawings distract me, but I felt they added a lot to this story. The tightness of the writing--yet the pace wasn't breakneck by any stretch. There was actually time to get to know the characters and the back story, and both were very rich. A lot of time was spent explaining Rithmatics and the alternate history, but not too much and it was woven in really well.
I will say that the book is labeled as YA but I'd place it closer to MG. The main character is 16, but it's got a younger voice. However, with the type of book that it is--that alternate history, steampunk-like world--it works. It's still very complex and I think it's a book that will appeal to younger kids (say advanced ten or eleven) and older kids and adults.
And judging by the ending, I'd say there will be a sequel, which I will DEFINITELY be reading.
