About the Author
Michael Nielsen was educated at the University of Queensland, and as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of New Mexico. He worked as the Richard Chace Tolman Fellow at Caltech at Los Alamos National Laboratory, was Foundation Professor of Quantum Information Science and a Federation Fellow at the University of Queensland, and a Senior Faculty Member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Isaac Chuang is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, jointly appointed in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and in Physics. He leads the quanta research group at the Center for Ultracold Atoms, in the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, which seeks to understand and create information technology and intelligence from the fundamental building blocks of physical systems, atoms and molecules.

A reprint of a very good reference book

Nielsen and Chuang's book can still be considered the main reference book on quantum information and computation, even after more than 10 years of the original release. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reference to start from.

However, if you already own the original version of the book, be warned that this book is basically a reprint of the first edition. It's true that it comes with a new introduction and afterword from the authors - but the new material is only 4 (four) pages long, and can be found online for free in this very site under the "Look inside" link. This is the reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 - I believe that a "10th Anniversary Edition" deserved a little bit more than 4 pages of new information, especially in the case of a book on a very dynamic field.

Kindle edition of this title is unreadable

This title is really promising, but on a Kindle it's absolutely unreadable. When a formula comes along (sometimes, three or four per page) I have to click and hold on the graphic, select "Zoom", and then view a grainy, digitized version of the formula. Because of the poor resolution, the formula is sometimes unreadable.

The same is true for illustrations. Worse yet, some symbols end up being in-lined graphics. "1/SQRT(2)", for example, shows the square root symbol and the number two as a graphic: "1/[]", where "[]" is a tiny square graphic. In this situation, I'm unable to select the graphic to expand it. If I can't guess the content of the formula from the context in the text, I'm simply stuck: I can't read the content.

I feel badly giving this book only two stars, but the Kindle version really is that unreadable. Amazon should be working to fix thee issues and make the Kindle a viable platform for technical books. As far as I can tell, Amazon scans titles and doesn't do adequate cleanup work for things (like formula with Greek characters and mathematical symbols) that don't reliably OCR. Poor content squanders the potential value in their platform, so you think they'd be motivated to make the platform work as well as possible.

Until Amazon come to their senses, you'll have to carry books like this (no matter how well-written) in your backpack instead of conveniently hosting them on your Kindle reader.

THE Quantum Computer text

Quantum Computation and Quantum Information: 10th Anniversary Edition
This book is definitely THE source to turn to for an understanding of Quantum Computation and Information. One can only read through the first chapter and you are given the key feature of Quantum Computation and Information. The advantage of this approach is that Chapter 1 establishes a Quantum roadmap of what you need to know. You can stop there or you can dive deeper into the technology. Using the remaining chapters as a reference or continuation of course studies.

But, it is the 10th Edition and I would have liked to see some new information associated with current trends in Quantum Computing. For examples:
1) Adiabatic verses Gate Arrays,
2) Quantum instructions examples, whether it is by circuit manipulation or by an Objective function,
3) A review section on quantum Notations (logic, Bra-kets, linear algebra) to help readers get back into it again.

This is THE book for those interested in finding out what is Quantum computers, but go slow with the first chapter and use the internet to clarify topics that are new to you, or to just refresh your memory. If you can skip through Chapter 1, you don't need the book.

Some good trading gems but needs better editing

I have a lot of respect for Andrew Abraham as a veteran trader who is passionate about the markets, has talked to lots of traders, and is willing to share the hard-earned insights he has gained through years and years of trying to grinding out profits in the market. His dedication to sharing his craft is admirable and commendable.

You will find a some really good trading gems in this book, and some well-deserved discussions regarding how hard it is to trade and make money year in and year out. I wish more trading books placed such emphasis on the "realities" of trading. As Andrew points out, if you're new to the markets and expect to make 50% to 100% per year using someone else's "trading robot", you are deluding yourself. Trading is a tough and ugly business, by far the hardest "easy money" you will ever make. The chapter on "The Trend Follower Mindset" was especially good - anyone who wants to trade systematically should read this chapter and take it to heart. In fact, you should probably read that chapter twice.

My sole disappointment with this book is just how poorly it is edited. I don't know if the responsibility for this rests on the writer, or the publisher (or more likely, a combination of both), but at points it feels like the author is rambling, almost to the point of incoherence.

Let me give you one example: in Chapters 7 and 8 ("trend breakouts" and "trend retracements"), the author spells out pretty clearly his methodology for trend trading the markets. He lays out his rules and he provides examples for how he trades. However, in Chapter 9 ("The trend following mindset"), on page 138, he writes: "My goal is to enlighten you and teach you what it took decades to learn. You will learn to have an exact plan with exact entries, exact exits with both profits and losses and exact quantities to buy and sell."

But wait, isn't that what you just did in chapters 7 and 8? Why are you writing that you "will" do something when you just did it?

Unfortunately, it feels almost as if this book was cobbled together from a series of independent blog posts or other coaching materials but no effort or thought was put into how the material all flows together. Instead the author seems to bounce around from subject to subject like a manic pinball. As others have noted, certain ideas are repeated over and over again, and at other points, the logic and flow of the text falls apart.

Like I said before, there are good trading ideas in this book but you have to wade through a lot of poorly-edited text to get to them. It's a shame, because it's uncommon for a veteran trader to be willing to share their experience so readily with the public and I think everyone (especially new traders) can benefit from that.

Achieved Its Goal, Fell Short in Some Areas

Andrew Abraham is a commodity trading advisor who has traded professionally for 18 years. He specializes in trend following strategies and recently published The Trend Following Bible.

The author profiles successful traders and warns of false messiahs and "geniuses" in the early part of the book. Abraham clearly states the objective of the book (always the first thing I look for!), but does not do so until page 79, which makes the "introduction" lengthy and repetitive. He promises to show readers how to have an exact trading plan, how to take low risk bets, how to take losses, how to allow profits to run, and how to develop the proper mindset of a trader. These are worthwhile topics and in short I believe he achieved those objectives despite some of the other shortcomings of the book.

His trading plan begins with a discussion of risk and capital management. He then shows how he identifies trending markets, including his use of Rate-of-Change (ROC) and MACD. He then shows precisely where he places his hard stops and trailing stops and how he takes profits.

Abraham's objective was not to sell his exact trading system to his audience, but rather his process. He encourages readers to create a system which fits his or her personality. As he states "strategies do not make good traders". He also notes that the tenets of trend following are simple and intuitive but in practice difficult to apply due to our own fear and greed.

Abraham repeats many trading psychology tips and tricks in an effort to help develop the proper mindset of a trader. While he repeats many of the same slogans pertaining to discipline and patience, they are worth repeating because they are so crucial to long-term trading success. Two notable points he emphasizes are accepting small losses and having and sticking to a trading plan. More experienced traders could be turned off by Abraham's repetition, but for new or aspiring traders this repetition has value.

The author concludes the book with a trade diary that is helpful for those new to trading. Abraham chronicles his trades from 2009-2011 with a detailed description of many of the trades. These descriptions became a bit repetitive, but for those new to trading it serves as a primer for what to expect as a "trend trader".

The book was not well edited, with several mistakes that should have been easily caught in the editorial process. I also felt like Abraham had some solid ideas, but since he admittedly is a trader first and author second, there should have been better organization and layout to the chapters. The editor and publisher failed in this regard. The title of the book also over-promises. I would not classify this as a "bible" or must-read, although it does emphasize several enduring qualities of many successful traders.

Abraham also runs a web site Trend Following Mentor and mentions it briefly in the book, but unlike many other books I have read in recent years there are not the perpetual referrals by the author to his website or material or charts on his site, which was a welcome change.

In short, Abraham does a good job of emphasizing discipline and patience. He achieves his stated goal of the book and provides insight into his precise trading strategy. The book falls short in its prose and editing and much of the book is repetitive and disjointed at times. If you can look beyond some of these shortcomings, it is still a decent read, especially for those new to trading or to trend-following.

Worst trending following I've already read

The first third of the book is only about saying how trend following is good and trading is hard. A totally waste of paper and time. After the author presents the technique. He wrote that we should keep it simple but he doesn't. He presents nothing new, but just a collection of other people's ideas. Definitely go to others sources. This isn't good.

About the Author
Donald Barthelme (April 7, 1931 – July 23, 1989) was an American author known for his playful, postmodernist style of short fiction. Barthelme also worked as a newspaper reporter for the Houston Post, was managing editor of Location magazine, director of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston (1961–1962), co-founder of Fiction (with Mark Mirsky and the assistance of Max and Marianne Frisch), and a professor at various universities. He also was one of the original founders of the University of Houston Creative Writing Program.

A painfully good read.

David Barthelme's Snow White, unlike some other specimens of avant-garde fiction, never loses its grip on the plot or the emotions of its characters in favor of retaining its experimental rhythms. One is able to feel sympathy for the many long-suffering dwarves, hope for the romantic leads, and an appropriate sense of the apalling regarding the villains, and still appreciate the puns and absurdities Barthelme was so adept at creating. At first glance, readers of more mainstream fiction might be put off by the seemingly random leaps between viewpoints and styles. However, on closer inspection, one finds a distinct pattern and a remarkable fullness to the prose. Not to mention the often tremendously funny, yes laugh-out-loud funny, episodes sprinkled throughout the book. By the time one reaches the last, very short, chapter, one sees that every line has been carefully crafted to reach this conclusion. It has become inevitable. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in adult faerie tales, experimental fiction, or anyone seeking a diverting, off the beaten path, change of pace from the cookie cutter junk so many authors now pass off as great literature.

Crazy man, crazy!

This is one of those books that it's easy to get a lot from, and leaves you with endless questions as well. It's one that makes you laugh out loud and makes you say "Huh?" an awful lot.
One of the many things I enjoyed about this book is the interweaving of elements from the original tale and the Disney version (Heigh-ho!) The rhythmn of the narrative almost made me snap my fingers along to the beat. And the originality within a retold story put me in mind of Anne Sexton's work with fairy tales, but with a decidedly comic view.
With layer upon layer (which I can't seem to get enough of) that extends from the solidarity of modern relationships to the questions of "How unique is the American culture? Can it be preserved?" I saw many examples where exploration is encouraged.
But many many many questions linger. First and foremost: Who is the narrator? More like: Which is the narrator? All of the "seven dwarfs", or just one? Are the all facets of one person? I could really go on all day.
This is truly a book worthy of a second, third, and fourth read. There is just too much for my little mind to grasp at once, but definately a novel that entertains as well as, (and I hate this phrase but...) "makes you think."

One of the great treasures of modern fiction.

I first read _Snow White_ some time in the '80s, and somehow was unmoved by the wit, the irony, the fantastic stylistic control. Then for some reason I started reading a section of it aloud to a friend, and fell in love with it. Each brief chapter has its own style, its own didactic purpose, and most of all its own mad humor. Barthelme is a worthy companion of Calvino (_If On a Winter's Night a Traveller_) in reinventing comic fiction

Saving Money

It is hard to justify spending money on anything when you live in poverty, but I thought that this book may pay for itself. I was right. I have only had it for a few months, and already it has helped me to grow enough food to pay for itself. My plan is to completely stop buying seeds within 3 years, and if all of the points in this book work as good as the ones that I have already used I see no problem with sticking with that plan.

Great for vegetable gardeners

I bought this book so I could start harvesting my own seeds for vegetable gardening. This is the exact reference I was looking for. Each veggie detailed with instructions for selecting, protecting from cross polination, harvesting and storing. Lots of info for flowers too, but flower seed harvesting is much more straight forward, so I think it is covered appropriately.

The premise is simple: We all hold the keys to our own success, and we deserve it. It is not accidental but deliberate and takes hard work.
1) Success starts with self-image because you are the only one who can make that possible. Before you convince anyone else, you have to convince yourself.
2) Successful people are ¡°Good Finders¡±; they look for the good in other people. ¡°You can have anything in your life, if you help others get what they want¡±. (page 57)
3) No goals = no game. Activity is not accomplishment. Don¡¯t be a wandering generality. Goals should be big, long range, daily and specific.
4) Unlimited possibilities. Records were meant to be broken. Until Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile, most thought it was physically impossible. After his achievement, people broke the record constantly.
5) Work as a team. There is a limit to what you can accomplish by yourself. Example: Geese fly 72% farther by flying together.
6) Attitude is everything. It determines the outcome. While you cannot control the environment, you (and only you) can control your attitude. The pessimist says. ¡°I will believe it when I see it.¡± The optimist says, ¡°I will see it when I believe it.¡± (page 206)
7) Create good habits because habits define our lives. Example: The average teenage student watches 17,000 hours of television before they graduate high school.
8) Successful people enjoy their work.

This book has many philosophies about how to get a better life. Zig Ziglar used of many real life examples and his personal experience to elaborate the formula to the top. Here are the six steps to the top:
1. Establish a healthy self-image: Image improves = performance improves
2. Build a good relationship with others: Always find ??Good?? in others
3. Set your goals: The only way to get to the top is to have a meaningful goal
4. Have a positive life attitude: React positively to negative situations
5. Work ?V Act now: Start your work to achieve the goals
6. Desire: Take whatever ability you have in whatever you are doing and utilize it to the maximum

I had the pleasure of hearing Zig Ziglar in person at a success 90 something seminar in Indianapolis, In. The audio cassette, See You at the Top is absolutely the best motivational tape I've ever heard. Zig has a knack for story telling and you can't help but fall in love with his southern charm. I have recommended this tape to dozens of co-workers and we are adding it to our current collection at work. You will more than get your money's worth on this one. I am planning on adding as many titles of Zig's to my personal collection as possible.

For readers who have ever had the sneaking suspicion that they're being shafted, the latest book from this Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative team ( America: What Went Wrong? ) provides the facts, figures, names and anecdotes to prove it. Their goal is to show how all those abstract terms bandied about on the Sunday morning talk shows affect the average taxpayer, particularly anyone whose family income is between, say, $25,000 and $150,000. Wealthy individuals squirrel away money through tax-free bonds, charitable-donations deductions and racehorses, among other write-offs; and the wealthiest corporations benefit from foreign tax credits, deductions for estimated worth of brand names and even the writing-off of interest on loans taken out to pay their stockholders (Weren't stockholders supposed to share both profits and losses?). All of which, the authors note with jackhammer regularity, leaves Joe and Jane Shmoe holding the tab. The authors are bipartisan in their apportionment of blame, rounding up not only the usual Republican presidential suspects but also Democrats like LBJ (whose "unified budget" amounted to a grand-scale doctoring of the books), Dan Rostenkowski (superannuated Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee) and even independent Ross Perot (whose tax-free income in 1991 was somewhere between $18 and $87 million). Their "modest proposal" on reforming the tax system is indeed that: one based largely on eliminating deductions and making all income--no matter how earned--equally taxable. Barlett and Steele's greatest achievement, though, is to have painstakingly translated mountains of often deliberately obscure material, thereby making their book a dream for those who've never quite grasped what government, corporations and the wealthiest few are doing--and a nightmare for those who have and want to keep that knowledge to themselves.

"Us middle-class schlemiels, that's who!" But that answer to the title's question is not all that informative, so Barlett and Steele, tax reporters for 25 years and authors of the 1992 bestseller, America: What Went Wrong?, tell us who doesn't pay and how they don't. Two systems of taxation have developed in the U.S. since the 1950s, they say, one for wealthy individuals and corporations, the other for everybody else. In the six subsequent chapters, they prove two-tiered taxation's a fact by discussing one rich stiff's tax dodge after another, from preferential capital gains rates to multinational corporate transfer-pricing to the tax court system, and they demonstrate that to those responsible for tax law (guys named Rostenkowski, Dole, Gephardt, etc.) money doesn't talk, it orders. After all the dismaying federal news, Barlett and Steele tell us about "The Unfairest Taxes of All": local and state government levies (on real estate, sales, income, etc.), which, driven by federal mandates upon states and municipalities, have risen faster and more inequitably than federal taxes. Barlett and Steele maintain fair taxation is a real possibility, and they make a serious "Modest Proposal" for reform that eventually, but hardly exclusively, does indeed depend upon real modesty, i.e., spending cuts. Researched and revealing

This is a compelling book that minces few words. The authors supply diverse statistics showing that the wealthy really do escape a fair share of taxes and Congress happily colludes in the scheme. The swindle's scope is seen as a back-handed tribute to the skill of those hired professionals - politicians and talking heads - who redirect taxpayer anger onto nickel and dime welfare cheats instead of the real recipients of government largesse. As the book shows, the tax-paying desires of the wealthy do get served.
The big picture lies in the sharp turnaround since 1950 in who pays the taxes. In that year the tax system was gearedf toward broadening membership in the middle-class, America's cushioning class. Since then, the shift towards taxing this sector out of existence has been little less than startling. Among the categories reflecting this turnaround: tax-exemption rates, Social Security levies, total tax-dollar comparisons, and state and local shifts in levies. A thumbnail sketch of taxation's history in the US helps the reader understand the class battle going on beneath the numbers.
The final chapter closes with recommendations for reforms. Most are quite sensible given the gross inequities that currently exist. For example: terminate capital gains preferences and tax this category as income, stop discriminating certain preferential categories of income from others, terminate tax-exempt securities, et. al. That corporate income tax should be increased is usually rebutted by claims that the increase will be passed along to the consumer. If so, then why - the authors point out - do corporations so stoutly resist this legislation, preferring instead an excise tax that would most surely be passed along. Good point.
The English statesman Disraeli once remarked, "Gentleman, there are three kinds of lies - lies, damned lies, and statistics." Perhaps so. Yet anyone challenging B&S's figures or our ruinous departure from progressive taxation will have to pass through this book first.

Excellent technical compendium

This book is an excellent study of the history of taxation in America, and particularly the use of tax law to encourage or discourage social, "fairness", and other political agendas. Great insight into how a tax bill is actually formulated, the bill's administrative process and its limitations, and the role of the political leaders in establishing the direction of new legislation.

Left winged or right winged this book is well researched

America, Who Stole the Dream, was a WONDERFUL READ. I find myself leaning more to the right, from a political perspective, but the authors arguments are EXCELLENT at times and they definitely bring up some great points.
This book is the most well argued book I have read about the current demise of the middle class in the U.S. After reading it I would definitely have to say that I have more concern about political decisions being made in Washington as the authors illustrate that consistently the politicians don't do the right thing for the country.
The authors bring up several concerns
1. Middle class demise via outsourcing of manufacturing to lower cost areas
2. Growing disparity of wealth (the rich own more in % terms)
3. The outsourcing of the `HIGH TECH JOBS' that are to be the savior of the country.
4. Commentary about various social programs set up and how ineffective they are.
In conclusion I would say this book was extremely well researched and I therefore give KUDOS to the authors. While I don't agree with everything they wrote I believe they have put forth an excellent piece of work.
My main contention with the book is that it focuses on the demise of manufacturing and low-end jobs, along with some high tech. The U.S. is expensive from a labor perspective. As we have outsourced much of our manufacturing we have been able to purchase products at cheaper prices in the U.S.. Imagine what some products would cost if we were paying for labor that was, in some cases, 10x higher than current wages in developing countries? NOWHERE in the book do the authors mention the BENEFIT to our standard of living because we can buy more with our dollars than we would be able to do so otherwise. In general, this book is WAY to the left so reader beware.
My background is a B.S. in Acct., an MBA in finance and current interests in economic and social policy development so I found this to be quite an interesting read.

Good textbook, but you must be otherwise very familiar with QFT

I am working through this book now and just about to finish part II.

If I am not mistaken, this is currently the only book dealing exclusive with the subject of quantum phase transition.

A basic recurring theme is: at T=0 you have a critical point and two (quantum) phases on two sides. Add a little temperature, and you gets a few thermally-excited quasiparticles above the ground state on either side of the critical point. Except when you are immediately above the critical point, where the quasiparticle picture breaks down.

Sachdev systematically treats each model in the same way. First he would establish the behaviors of the two zero-T phases, and then discuss the finite-T region where the physics can be described by quasiparticles, and finally treat the quantum critical regime. Having a unifying structure makes grasping the concept easier.

That said, Sachdev does assume a very good foundation in QFT. It is commonplace in the book where he just defines an action, states that he is going to integrate out such-and-such, and then slaps the end result on you straightaway. You will have a really hard time making sense of what he wrote if you have just finished the standard one-year sequence of QFT.

(If you can do most of the problems in Peskin/Schoeder without refering to the book or your notes, you are good to go.)

Bottom line: be prepared for many omitted derivations and missing steps. Four stars, still. At least Sachdev provides a coherent direction, and I have seen books much more incomprehensible.

Well written but somewhat dated

This was a well written text book that gives an introduction to a great number of important fields. It does a particularly good job giving a fair treatment to some options that are often overlooked in books on sustainable energy such as geothermal and nuclear energy. It also gives a good background in the economics of electricity and liquid fuels.

It is however already quite dated. The book was published right before the price of oil started to soar, and completely didn't see it coming. Many statements support the idea that oil will be cheap for many decades to come. They certainly were not alone in not seeing this coming, but it is sometimes hard to take them seriously on other subjects when they keep referring back to the low price of oil.

Extremely useful reference, if a bit dated

I've been working in the energy field for the past few years, and this is one of the few references I've found that describes all of our energy options with real depth. Information is well organized and systematically laid out. The book is, as others have pointed out, unfortunately already outdated.

Good reference book; not necessarily great for students entering the field

As a student with little to no experience in the field, some topics and language can be overwhelming. As an electrical engineer, I have some background into the technologies presented. However, some concepts are either presented lightly or ambiguously. The later chapters cover some technologies in-depth and present their uses and future well. However, the intro chapters present a steep learning curve for the reader.

Would recommend as a reference.
