A new approach to learn physiology

I am an Internist with special interest in Critical Care & Pulmonary Medicine, I am also involved in teaching. I literally have reviewed almost every physiology text that has been published in the last 20 years. Most are quantitative and not conceptual. This is a very unique approach that I really like. Dr. Munis has deliberately chosen an idiosyncratic and non-traditional approach. It emphasizes fundamental concepts that are wrapped around interesting stories and numerous custom images printed on high quality paper. The book is essentially a group of tutorials written in bite sized chunks and in a conversational mode. Once I started reading, I could not put it down . I particularly like the emphasis throughout on understanding difficult concepts with non-medical examples. The book has been specially designed to optimize your learning of cardio-pulmonary physiology. The book has been edited by a team experienced in academic medicine . As noted , the writing is vivid and engaging ( very rare physiology texts !) . I highly recommend the book for M1,M2 and M3 students. A must read for M4 students in Critical Care and Anesthesiology electives. Additionally I think that the book will also be very useful to students in Biomedical Sciences Physician Assistant Programs, Respiratory Therapists and CRNAs. I hope that the author can expand the book to other body systems.

More attention has been paid to market planning, economics, education, and extension and labour management. A number of terms relating to apiculture, meteorology and informatics have been introduced. Technology has been given more prominence, but so many new terms have been coined in this field that a selection had to be made. Regarding plant diseases, only general terms are mentioned; specific pests and diseases are not listed in view of the existence of specialized dictionaries. The same goes for weeds. A list of international organizations is included, with translations in English and French.

About the Author

Peter Young is a freelance writer and runs his own communications company. For many years he played Hammond B-3 organ with a number of Toronto-based rock bands and travelled extensively throughout much of Southern Ontario, performing in many of the province's popular dance pavilions. His first book, published in May 1997 – The Kee to Bala Is Dunn's Pavilion – was received with great enthusiasm in Muskoka and beyond. Peter's second effort in 1998 – Lake Huron's Summer Dance Pavilions: Sand, Surf and Music – chronicled the places and people who brought song to this golden coastline from the 1920s to the present. Let's Dance is the third book in this series and covers many more of Ontario's popular dance venues.

Seiichiro Kawase is a director at the Kashima Space Communication Center and was formerly a visiting professor at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo. He earned his B.E. and M.E. in mechanical engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and his D.E. in electronic engineering at Tokyo University.

Not a Rigorous Treatment

I may have been able to tell this from the various descriptions or from the table of contents, but this book has very little mathematical detail. Now, with that said, the coverage of the subject is excellent, especially in examination of noise sources and how this limits results, but again at a very non-mathematical level. This book is not for a physicist, electrical engineer or anyone looking to apply these techniques in their field.

I'd recommend it to anyone

Even if all you want is to spend some time reading a likable author with a knack for engaging prose and a good story to tell, then this book is already a winning proposition. Buy it now.

But if you might also like, along the way, to learn a bit about acting, English life/culture, and even Shakespeare's history plays from the production perspective, then this is absolutely essential reading.

There have been plenty of actors' memoirs over the years -- indeed there have been some written in the diary format (like this one) by classically-trained Shakespearean actors. Many of these memoirs are very good reading. But this one, for me, takes Best in Show. Why? Because of what this project is about and who Asbury is. The book's genesis was as a blog on the website for "The Histories," a multi-year, ensemble production. So Asbury is not the kind of actor who headlines Hollywood movies in between plays, some star regaling his fan base with reverie and a behind-the-curtain schtick. Instead, this is an in-the-trenches, for-the-love (and frustration)-of-it look at the what ensemble acting is supposed to be. This is about a friendly and intelligent working actor in rural(-ish) England showing and sharing his experience of the art, its culture, and sometimes life in general.

That Asbury writes with such a cozy but versatile style is another treat. He has no trouble ranging from boyishness, to sweetness, to insightful commentary--sometimes within pages. What he doesn't ever do (thankfully) is get overblown or pompous.

I should clarify that this is not an "academic" book, per se. The drama student reviewers here are right that this book can be--in addition to being fun--useful and inspiring to young actors. I, myself, am an English literature professor, and it's been very useful to me, both in the classroom and for my work on Shakespeare in performance. But I would recommend this book to ANYONE. Give it as a gift, add it to your book club list: whatever. It'll fit in.

In keeping with its blogger beginnings, the book retains the diary format -- so there's no thematic structure; the reader is simply carried along through the experience as Asbury records it. There is talk of a new book coming by Asbury, by the way...here's hoping...

Nick Asbury writes beautifully and not egocentrically

I really wish that I was able to pursue theater. This book goes into production at the Royal Shakespeare Company through the eyes of a member of the cast. not a star. Nick Asbury writes beautifully and not egocentrically. I enjoyed this book.

Brilliant insight for all!

This book is a detailed, intriguing and an enlightening read. Asbury takes you on a wirlwind adventure from table tennis, tech rehearsals to the jolly times in the Dirty Duck. And without doubt you feel like one of the company by the end, so much so you feel proud of the performance. I am an actor, and I read this book during my training. It was beneficial to me in so many ways, both in terms of the approach to my career and also as an eager fan of the RSC. This book truly conveys the life of the working actor. It is not all about living the high life. And Nick Asbury shows the true work and committment acting requires in a warm, humorous and honest way. I would reccommend this book without doubt. Whether you like the theatre or not the process and life of an actor is something unknown and often speculated about. Here Nick Asbury reveals the true story. Therefore it appeals to all. Thank you Nick for a wonderful insight in the workings of the History Cycle...also showing that, although actors love the pub, we work bloody hard too. Katie

Mary Ruth Coleman, Ph.D., is a senior scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute and Research Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She directed Project U-STARS~PLUS (Using Science, Talents and Abilities to Recognize Students), a Javits Gifted and Talented Student Education Program and project.

Susan K. Johnsen, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at Baylor University. She directs the Ph.D. program and programs related to gifted and talented education. She is past-president of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented. She has written more than 100 articles, monographs, technical reports, and books related to gifted education. She is a frequent presenter at international, national, and state conferences.

She is also the editor of Gifted Child Today and serves on the editorial boards of Gifted Child Quarterly and Journal of Advanced Academics. She coauthored the Independent Study Program and three tests that are used in identifying gifted students: Test of Mathematical Abilities for Gifted Students (TOMAGS), Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (TONI-4), and Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students (SAGES-2).

Good starting point for gifted program models

To best use this book, you'll need a good understanding of the RtI model in schools. The book is a series of articles, all about how to successfully use RtI to ensure the needs of gifted students are addressed.

There are several different models for approaching this issue. Each model has a chapter devoted to explaining it, examining the research behind it, and offering ideas for implementation. One thing I appreciated is the authors often cited online resources for the reader to examine later.

This is by no means a comprehensive examination of the status of gifted students in our schools, but it's a step toward understanding how to give them a fair and equitable education tailored to their needs.

This book was provided to me through a Library Thing First Reads offering in exchange for an honest review. I am involved in the GATE program at my school district, and requested this book for that reason.

This book is well-organized, well researched and easy to read and understand. I think it would be an excellent guide for any organization or individual looking to implement RTI with gifted students.

The only thing I didn't like about the book was a format issue where words occasionally broke across lines. It's a pet peeve of mine.

About the Author
Howard M. Wiseman is Director of the Centre for Quantum Dynamics at Griffith University, Australia. He has worked in quantum measurement and control theory since 1992, and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (AAS). He has received the Bragg Medal of the Australian Institute of Physics, the Pawsey Medal of the AAS, and the Malcolm Macintosh Medal of the Federal Science Ministry.

Gerard J. Milburn is an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia. He has written three previous books, on quantum optics, quantum technology, and quantum computing. He has been awarded the Boas Medal of the Australian Institute of Physics and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the American Physical Society.

In the summer of 1777, while the British and the Americans were engaged in the bitter American Revolution, a massive campaign was launched from Canada into New York State.

Brigadier Barry St. Leger led a crucial expedition from Lake Ontario into the Mohawk Valley. The goal was to travel by waterways to join Lieutenant General John Burgoyne in the siege of Albany. But Leger encountered obstacles along the way. While laying siege to Fort Stanwix, Leger received word that Benedict Arnold was leading a massive relief column that was headed their way. Leger and his men retreated, and despite a later attempt to carry on, were never able to help Burgoyne. The Americans then destroyed the British-held Fort Ticonderoga, marking the end of the campaign.

The results of the failed St. Leger expedition were historic. Not only was the loss of Fort Ticonderoga was a major blow to the British war effort, but the campaign also brought about the disillusionment of the Iroquois Confederacy, and saw the founding of the infamous Butler’s Rangers and the first major campaign of Sir John Johnson’s King’s Royal Regiment.

About the Author

Gavin K. Watt is president of the Museum of Applied Military History, a confederation of some 450 volunteer historical animators, but he is perhaps best known as a founder and commanding officer of the recreated King's Royal Yorkers. He is the author of Burning of the Valleys: Daring Raids from Canada against the New York Frontier in the Fall of 1780 (Dundurn, 1996).

"Rebellion in the Mohawk" - The Story Continues

Gavin Watt's latest contribution to the history of the American Revolution in the Mohawk Valley in New York (Rebellion in the Mohawk) is a wonderful account and the research matches that of his previous books. A very well-written, smooth reading account and once again, the author's research is impeccable. What is particularly appealing (to both scholars and the general reader) is the extensive footnotes which provide the little known (or previously unknown) background details that Watt and his co-author/researcher James Morrison provide along with deductive reasoning and especially the interjection of various small details of original accounts that add "spice" and some levity to the book; for example Watt including this rare quote from original documents relating "the Royal Yorkers being ordered not to wear their shoes when fishing!". Such aspects provide one with a true sense of what it would have been like at that time.
Overall, another excellent addition to the library of those interested in the American Revolution, irregardless of the exact phase; again a fine job by the author. I highly recommend it.

Sorting Out The Turmoil of 1777

The Rebellion In The Mohawk Valley, The St. Leger Expedition of 1777 is the third book in Gavin Watt's trilogy about the turmoil that swept through that region during the American Revolution. There's a certain sense of dread and doom as one reads through the book, especially for Canadians who may identify with the hopes and aspirations of the Loyalists as the 1777 campaign unfolded.
The book goes into great detail about the victory at Oriskany by Crown Forces, balanced with their failure to take Ft. Stanwix.
It is intersting to note how casualty estimates vary according to which side was reporting, and how the Americans have taken the destruction of the Tryon County Militia and somehow cast it into a Rebel victory. There is, however a balance to the book, and people favouring either side can feel at home reading it.
Aside from the military aspects of the book, you get to know Joseph Brant, Sir John Johnson, Daniel Claus, Nicholas Herkimer and many other central figures. Great military history. Well written. Great biography. Definitely one for anyone interested in that time period.

History brought alive

One of the best things about a well written history is its ability to bring the participants to life. Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley does just that for a little know battle of the American Revolution. From the patriots (or rebels depending on which side you feel yourself on) to the Loyal Americans fighting for their very homes and farms I now understand not just what motivated a group of people on both sides who lived through one of the most important events in world history, but I also now know a lot about how they lived, fought and felt. This was war between neighbors, friends and even family and this book's descriptions of that fact brings a whole new dimension to the story.
The author, a Canadian, and the American researchers and historians who contributed to his work have produced a balanced and colourful work. Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley clears up many long held misconceptions about this important battle and the events that surrounded it.
The illustrations and maps are very helpful. When combined with the descriptions of the places, people and events in the book I came away with a clear image of the events it describes and explains. The author clearly knows the time period and the locations in the book very well indeed.
One of the best features of the book are the extensive footnotes and the bibliography. From here one could go on to explore the entire American Revolution. It opened my eyes to the other side's view of the war and made me see this part of it in a much more open way, I'm anxious to do just that.

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone from early teens on in age because regardless of your degree of knowledge or interest in this particular battle of the revolution the quality of the storytelling alone makes it worth the read.
I just wish I could meet some of the people I came to know.
